Atari might not be the most critically or financially successful company in the industry (to put it politely) but the publisher still has a few tricks in its magic bag. With franchises like Baldur's Gate, Dungeons & Dragons, Test Drive Unlimited and Neverwinter Nights, there is some considerable intellectual property under the belt.
In fact, Atari is looking at revisiting all of these franchises in the future, which is bound to be great news for some. Unfortunately, none of these revivals seem likely within the next twelve months.
"You will hear more from these but not today, because we're focused on 2009," claims Infogrames president Phil Harrison.
A new Baldur's Gate would probably be pretty decent. I'm not a fan of many Western hack n' slash RPGs, but the PS2 iteration of the series caught my eye, if only for the barmaid's big tits. Just a shame that it'll be a year before there's any word on the thing, especially since Atari needs to wash the taste of Alone in the Dark out of its mouth.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The co-op was so much fun for my 12 year old uncorrupted mind.
I already said I'm not a fan of these types of RPGs, so I never really paid attention until Dark Alliance.
Also, it'd be nice if they kept the writing with Obsidian. Alpha Protocol looks awesome and Mask of the Betrayer was one of the best storylines in many years.
Actually, that doesn't sound much like Mass Effect at all.
The PS2 games were mediocre hack n' slashes. Yawn.
BTW technically Biowares version is more tactical to a hack and slash version requiring you to pause and unpause, using different strategies.
Your comparing apples to gold which is why I took offense.
It just wasn't Baldur's Gate. BG2 is still one of my favorite games of all time, it so perfectly makes your meandering path through sidequests seem as meaningful as the main quest. Other games just don't seem to be able to nail that.
I'm sure you should be able to tell by now that I am not a fan of BioWare.
Also, Jim, seriously, Baldurs Gate 1&2 on PC are incredible. If their not your type of game you need to change your type of game.
You just have to go back and try it, it kind of out of date but so far Bioware hasn't recaptured that essence in a while. Which is probably why they are doing Dragon Age.
As for the DA hating, I think we all just know Buldar's Gate just can't be compared to that kind of game. There really not even the same genre.
The two original Baldur's Gate games, and their expansion packs, are some of the finest RPGs to grace the gaming market. Not just the PC market, but ANY market. You can know next to zilch about tabletop DnD -- like I do -- and still enjoy the hell out of both those PC classics. And the great part is, even if you have a 'shitty' PC by today's standards, it'll still run Baldur's Gate like a raped ape. Give 'em a try.
IF NOT=Very Bad
As for Bioware masterpieces, I'll bring up Planescape: Torment because nobody else has. Not so great gameplay but it had an utterly fantastic setting and writing. It's what KotOR 2 and NWN2 should have been if they weren't rushed out the door half-finished.
To be fair KOTOR 2 and NWN 2 were developed by Obsidian, the Treyarch of RPGs.
If they could manage to pull it off I would go insane, Bioware has my hopes up with Dragon Age but a true sequel, o man.
I have been itching to play it through again... this might just push me over the edge even though I literally have over a full dozen games to play through/finish atm.
Translating...
"Atari is looking at shitting all over your fond memories when games were good."
I want the real game not a lame daiblo clone with boring map layouts and basic combat.
Baldur's Gate 2 though, there is a chance someone could retro game that baby. Everything is done a lot better and its still one of the deepest RPGs on PC ever.
I'm convinced that after BG2 and its massive scale, Bioware just decided they didn't need to work that hard on a game ever again. Hopefully Dragon Age will prove me wrong.
