Baldur's Gate to return? Also, Neverwinter Nights, D&D and Test Drive Unlimited photo

Atari might not be the most critically or financially successful company in the industry (to put it politely) but the publisher still has a few tricks in its magic bag. With franchises like Baldur's Gate, Dungeons & Dragons, Test Drive Unlimited and Neverwinter Nights, there is some considerable intellectual property under the belt.

In fact, Atari is looking at revisiting all of these franchises in the future, which is bound to be great news for some. Unfortunately, none of these revivals seem likely within the next twelve months.

"You will hear more from these but not today, because we're focused on 2009," claims Infogrames president Phil Harrison.

A new Baldur's Gate would probably be pretty decent. I'm not a fan of many Western hack n' slash RPGs, but the PS2 iteration of the series caught my eye, if only for the barmaid's big tits. Just a shame that it'll be a year before there's any word on the thing, especially since Atari needs to wash the taste of Alone in the Dark out of its mouth.

For some utterly unknown reason, I couold never get enough of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 on PS2.

The co-op was so much fun for my 12 year old uncorrupted mind.

If it's a new Baldur's Gate - my hope is it will be in the vein of the original PC and it's successors and not just another hack and slash console release. One can at least hope...

Wow PS2 iteration, are you serious? I hope that's a very unfunny joke. I can't believe your trying to put it above Bioware's version.

I already said I'm not a fan of these types of RPGs, so I never really paid attention until Dark Alliance.

I'm hoping they DON'T do yet another sequel of Baldur's Gate. That story is over and done with, and unless they plan on hitting up the 4th edition setting, they should start somewhere fresh.

Also, it'd be nice if they kept the writing with Obsidian. Alpha Protocol looks awesome and Mask of the Betrayer was one of the best storylines in many years.

I was a big fan of Baldur's Gate on the PC, but I could not get into Neverwinter Nights. I think it was the transition to 3D from Isometric view. Best of luck to them.

Dark Alliance bore very little resemblance to the original Black Isle/Bioware Baldur's gate games. The PC games were much more akin to an isometric Mass Effect, but with well detailed environments, interesting characters, and a functional interface.

Actually, that doesn't sound much like Mass Effect at all.

The PS2 games were mediocre hack n' slashes. Yawn.

Yeah you definitely never tried them if you think the Bioware Baldur's Gate games were "hack n' slash."

@Jim Sterling: You said you were not a fan of many, I mean come on how can you miss the original birthright of Bioware. They laid the golden egg that has lead them to their current greatness. To appreciate Bioware you have to suck on the egg. Do it! I demand it!

BTW technically Biowares version is more tactical to a hack and slash version requiring you to pause and unpause, using different strategies.

Your comparing apples to gold which is why I took offense.

The PS2 iterations of the baldur's gate series were utter shit...if you disagree id redirect you to play the original two games on the pc...though the first game might take a little getting used to, as the graphics are quite terrible.

Hey guys, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance wasn't a bad game.

It just wasn't Baldur's Gate. BG2 is still one of my favorite games of all time, it so perfectly makes your meandering path through sidequests seem as meaningful as the main quest. Other games just don't seem to be able to nail that.

We should probably reign it in with the DA hate. We're starting to sound like Fallout fans.

I'm excited and terrified at the same time.

Also, Jim, seriously, Baldurs Gate 1&2 on PC are incredible. If their not your type of game you need to change your type of game.

Not being a fan of Bioware based on KOTOR and Mass Effect is like not being a fan of Star Wars based on Episodes 1-3.

@Jim Sterling Haven't been paying attention, but I'm sad panda for you. Seriously Buldar's Gate were amazing pieces of PC history it's like missing Legend of Zelda for SNES.

You just have to go back and try it, it kind of out of date but so far Bioware hasn't recaptured that essence in a while. Which is probably why they are doing Dragon Age.

As for the DA hating, I think we all just know Buldar's Gate just can't be compared to that kind of game. There really not even the same genre.

I was honestly perplexed after reading this article that Jim referenced Baldur's Gate as PS2 Games. I had to think for a bit on that one. Brain. ... Hurt. It's like saying that the Sonic RPG game for the DS was lame, so that must mean the original Sonic 1 & 2 for the Genesis must be lame, as well. Does. Not. Compute.

The two original Baldur's Gate games, and their expansion packs, are some of the finest RPGs to grace the gaming market. Not just the PC market, but ANY market. You can know next to zilch about tabletop DnD -- like I do -- and still enjoy the hell out of both those PC classics. And the great part is, even if you have a 'shitty' PC by today's standards, it'll still run Baldur's Gate like a raped ape. Give 'em a try.

I'm with Jim on this one, I absolutely love the console versions of Baldur's Gate (and Champions.) I have not played the PC versions, so maybe I should give them a try one of these days.

Attempting to continuing the Baldur's Gate (PC) storyline would be foolish. The expansion for BG2 wrapped things up pretty conclusively and it's been too long since it came out for them to continue the story anyway. The Dark Alliance games were fun, but they're nothing on the PC games.

As for Bioware masterpieces, I'll bring up Planescape: Torment because nobody else has. Not so great gameplay but it had an utterly fantastic setting and writing. It's what KotOR 2 and NWN2 should have been if they weren't rushed out the door half-finished.

@Snidesworth

To be fair KOTOR 2 and NWN 2 were developed by Obsidian, the Treyarch of RPGs.

@Snidesworth actually Planescape Torment was made by Black Isle Studios (who also made the original Fallouts). And Baldur's Gate 3 was to be made as a low level campaign, and not the epic one in the first two games.

I think the PC version is the best game series in history. But I did enjoy DA on the gamecube, but I do kinda wish it just had a different name... Anyway...
If they could manage to pull it off I would go insane, Bioware has my hopes up with Dragon Age but a true sequel, o man.
I have been itching to play it through again... this might just push me over the edge even though I literally have over a full dozen games to play through/finish atm.

Dark Alliance is not Baldur's Gate If it is another one of those then I don't care.

I want the real game not a lame daiblo clone with boring map layouts and basic combat.

Hmm,well Test Drive Unlimited was a great game,I would love to see a well fleshed out sequel.Of course MCLA is out now,but Test Drive is still pretty fun.

Eh, if you didn't play the original Baldur's Gate when it first came out, then going back now isn't going to work. Its just too damn old and hasn't aged well at all.

Baldur's Gate 2 though, there is a chance someone could retro game that baby. Everything is done a lot better and its still one of the deepest RPGs on PC ever.

I'm convinced that after BG2 and its massive scale, Bioware just decided they didn't need to work that hard on a game ever again. Hopefully Dragon Age will prove me wrong.
