You are everything that is wrong with us.
OT: With the modding scene for the BG trilogy being INSANE, with BG:EE modding even easier (according to the developers at beamdog), 3 new characters each adding hours of story content, enhanced and overhauled UI and graphics options, modern OS compatibility... this is an easy purchase for me.
ಠ_ಠ
I may never get around to playing BG:EE before it comes to Steam. So, I may have the opportunity to preorder it anyway. If I do get the urge to play it then so be it. I'll have to wait for a steam sale to justify the price of buying a game I've already played. I'm just being practical.
Now if I gamed on another platform(ipad, android)it would be a different story.
If the message you're trying to convey is:
"I really just can't take any more of these various logins and clients for every publisher's and their mom's game releases, I'm just sick of it and I won't buy a game that isn't offered on steam because Valve has earned my loyalty several times over"
I get that, I really do. I may not agree with it all the time but we all see where that's coming from. The issue is, you saying on a public board "If this ain't on steam I'm gunna pirate" doesn't say to me that you're a reasonable customer who won't do business like that, but just a chump who's looking for an excuse to pirate.
I don't know if any BG:EE devs read the comments on Destructoid or elsewhere, but when they see comments like yours they are not at all encouraged to accede to your needs, and if anything feel less enthused for the project they're working so very hard on.
What I'm trying to say is your comment is part of the problem of PC gaming, not the solution. Maybe you don't care about that, but I do and I bet so do the editors at Destructoid.
I'm trying not to be preachy here, but I do hope my point has come across.
Otherwise, yea I'll pick it up once it's on sale. $20 is a bit much for a game I already own.
Will it be sold on steam or directly over some website?
To answer all 3 at once, it will be available on the Beamdog website, they have a downloading client you have to use, however after that the game boots up all by itself, no checks needed and the downloader itself can go.
As for being available elsewhere, Trent Oster (the lead on the BGEE project) has talked about "timed exclusivity" for Beamdog. While he hasn't explicitly said that its coming to Steam, GoG or anywhere else, the sense I get is after a while it will be offered up on other services. Seemed reasonable enough to me.
@Shredator
Perhaps so, but I understand how easy it is to get frustrated these days over the business side of gaming, and to make comments you don't necessarily mean when venting these frustrations.
After some reflection on my first comment, I can see how a dev could see it like that. My rule is always: "I want to own this game on the best platform for that game."
I don't mind owning games like Thief & Planescape on GOG because it's the best platform for those games right now.
I use to be the guy that pirated everything I could, but I've steadily purchased almost everything I've ever pirated. I only have the Wii(Bought everything ported over to a different platform), PSP(Never even played any of them) and I'm still not sure what to do about new EA/Bioware titles that are best on PC.
Ah man that makes things iffy for me... i strongly dislike buying from unknown websites, and if its done through some sort of pay pal or simmilar client it just makes things iffier.
Glad to hear that the exclusivity for Beamdog would be timed. I'll be holding out for GOG/Steam.
"Saw a couple blogs mentioning the Steam fanboi threat to pirate #bgee if it wasn't on Steam. Thx for the support. Threats don't work."
"I like Steam, but our biz deal is for an exclusive launch. So we sell through Beamdog and deliver direct, similar to Blizzard on Starcraft2"
"With a purchase through Beamdog, you will get a launcher app which checks for updates, then launches the game and shuts down. No client."
"The only way to totally beat piracy is to mimic Diablo3 and make an online service. I'd rather put the effort into the game."
"Our anti-piracy strategy is value. We plan to do updates, people who buy get the updates direct, pirates will have to work at it."
AND even better news:
"#bgee should be as easy (if not easier) to mod than BG. We've integrated most of the bug fix stuff (with help from some of the mod creators)" How cool is that?? Great guys we have there. Let them know you think so too by pre-ordering. :)
The only reason the Mac version might not launch same day as the PC is due to the Apple approval process. Should still be very close with the hope that it IS the same day, but as such, no Mac pre-order.
