Since he was 14, pianist Jason Lyle Black has been honing the unorthodox technique of playing the piano while sitting in reverse. Can you imagine all the muscle memory you'd have to fight against to pull off such a feat? I guess it wouldn't be much different from crossing your arms during play, but it's impressive to watch nonetheless.
So here's Jason as he plays through the overworld theme of Super Mario Bros., peppering his performance with some reverse action. Then, just for kicks and giggles, he lies on the floor on his back and plays the damn thing upside-down!
As a pianist of sixteen years, learning to play inverted is nothing new. In fact, it's one of the tenets of the fugue. The only adjustment required is becoming comfortable with backward stretched arms.
Having just attempted this myself, I'm most impressed with his range in movement. I had to separate my hands by an octave just to keep my hands on the keys!
The main features are extremely hypermobile (bendy) joints, which easily dislocate and subluxate (partially dislocate); hyperextensive (stretchy, or rubber) skin, which is prone to tearing; amongst a range of other things, depending on the type of EDS involved.
Most contortionists you see have EDS. The man with the rubber face? EDS. Guy sticking his body through a tennis racket? EDS.
It's pretty cool, but also potentially life-threatening, frequently disabling (at some stage), and almost always the cause of chronic pain and fatigue. Awesome party tricks, but at a very, very high price.
I'm just happy he didn't end it with the "Game Over" tune. It seems like every Mario medley ends that way. Do all video game cover musicians suck at Mario?
