Backward rhythm shooter Retro/Grade announced for PSN photo

At first glance, Retro/Grade looks to be a very ordinary and uninteresting shooter, and I admittedly let out a small groan upon watching the first few seconds of its trailer, thinking we had another Aegis Wing on our hands. That was, until, they said we'd be playing it backward. With rhythm-based movement. To a chiptune-inspired soundtrack. With a guitar controller, if that's your cup of tea. Now you have my pensive attention.

The first effort by developer 24 Caret Games, Retro/Grade has just been announced for release on PSN. You can play the game with a standard PS3 controller, or as mentioned, plug in your Guitar Hero thingy and rock it out that way, so to speak. No word yet on a date, but if the idea of a backward-retro-rhythm-shooter sounds like something you can't wait for, there's a demo available now, and more info on the game's Web site. Oh, and that trailer? You'll find it after the jump.

Certainly an interesting take on the shooter genre. I gave the demo a try, and although that ability to undo any mistakes is useful on the easier difficulties, it doesn't make the pro part any easier. I had to redo one part five times, and I always ended up getting hit by an enemy shot when I stop the undoing process, which means I end up using up all that stuff for nothing.

It's clever and frustrating at the same time, I'll probably give it a try when it comes out.

I don't know about this one... Neat idea, but looks a little less shmup and a little more rhythm than I really enjoy.

What an interesting idea. PSN is making it hard for me to resist getting a PS3. First Toro, now this.

This looks awesome, I don't like how large the ship seems to be, but I guess that doesnt matter at all. Looks fun! Guitar controller is quite the surprise, I'll be picking this up for sure.

yeah doesn't look like a shmup because you won't be shooting shit. shots are decided for you and you just umm "pick them up". it's more of a rythm game.

I'm a sucker for anything that even mentions the word "chiptune".

Heh, I talked about this awhile ago, and it's good to see some news on it. Hopefully it also is available on either PC or 360.

Oh my goodness. I have both systems, but I'd really like for this to come to XBLA. Why? Because I only have 360 guitar controllers. And while I wouldn't buy a PS3 guitar controller just for this game, I would buy this game for a system if I already had a guitar controller.
