What do you get when you mix classic NES game Super Mario Bros with some unsteady camera work and After Effects? A headache? Kidding! But get a dolly, man.
No, the After Effects work is really great here. As found on nowhereelse, various levels of SMB seem to be painted onto the sidewalk and curbside in this video, and you'll watch on as Mario successfully navigates it all to get to the princess. I love how the underworld and underwater levels go down from the curb and into the sidewalk in a different angle. I also like how the camera's perspective changed a bit toward the end, as if looking back.

Amazing to look at but I did get motion sickness from watching it - but then again if it used a dolly I suppose it would take away some of the effect, though I now I wouldn't want to bring my tea back up lol
I have never gotten motion sickness from watching something before this video. I think it's because of trying to follow a 2d plane with 3d shake. Blargh. Sucks, because it seems like a fun idea.
It's interesting that they would take the time and money to shoot this on film. As I write that I am reconsidering my initial position, thinking that they would have to have used a film camera that was capable of a take that long. Hrm. Questions questions questions. . . .
The whole "retro indie" look that a lot of student videographers and graphic designers used is pretty dumb in my opinion, but it was still a somewhat neat concept for a video and the effect was cool.
I've seen other animations similar to this and I have to say, it's really quite impressive how they have the dilligence to pull it off. The truly insane ones are the traditionally done ones where they have to constantly erase and redraw the same character every time on the wall itself.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Aside from that, it's cool!
Also, I don't think that's a sidewalk, it's the fence/"wall" of a bridge.
Thanks for sharing this, Dale!
