Super Mario Bros. from Surfap on Vimeo.

What do you get when you mix classic NES game Super Mario Bros with some unsteady camera work and After Effects? A headache? Kidding! But get a dolly, man.

No, the After Effects work is really great here. As found on nowhereelse, various levels of SMB seem to be painted onto the sidewalk and curbside in this video, and you'll watch on as Mario successfully navigates it all to get to the princess. I love how the underworld and underwater levels go down from the curb and into the sidewalk in a different angle. I also like how the camera's perspective changed a bit toward the end, as if looking back.

[thanks, Steve]

So going down the pipe at 1:00 keeps you on the wall, but the pipes at 0:28 and 2:20 put you on the road? ¬_¬

Aside from that, it's cool!

Amazing to look at but I did get motion sickness from watching it - but then again if it used a dolly I suppose it would take away some of the effect, though I now I wouldn't want to bring my tea back up lol

I, too, was feeling the motion sickness, but puking on myself while watching this beautiful thing was well worth it.

It's neat when he gets to 8-4, it's under the shade of a tree.

I have never gotten motion sickness from watching something before this video. I think it's because of trying to follow a 2d plane with 3d shake. Blargh. Sucks, because it seems like a fun idea.

I didn't get any motion sickness, I just didn't like how he out paced where Mario was a few times.

It's interesting that they would take the time and money to shoot this on film. As I write that I am reconsidering my initial position, thinking that they would have to have used a film camera that was capable of a take that long. Hrm. Questions questions questions. . . .

The whole "retro indie" look that a lot of student videographers and graphic designers used is pretty dumb in my opinion, but it was still a somewhat neat concept for a video and the effect was cool.

I believe the shaky camera is intentional. It's better for showing off the guy's tracking ability.

Awesome, made by fellow Germans! Not that that puts me in any better light, but still. Great.

Also, I don't think that's a sidewalk, it's the fence/"wall" of a bridge.

Thanks for sharing this, Dale!

I've seen other animations similar to this and I have to say, it's really quite impressive how they have the dilligence to pull it off. The truly insane ones are the traditionally done ones where they have to constantly erase and redraw the same character every time on the wall itself.

This makes me wish I got to spend time with After Effects more often.
