When Microsoft unveiled its innovative new Mii idea to the world, a lot of people erroneously believed that Microsoft had copied Nintendo in a cynical attempt to capture some of the mythical "casual" market that never existed until 2006. Microsoft, however, has set the record straight about its innovative new Mii idea, claiming that Avatars were the result of logic and not mimicry.
"It’d be remiss to say that we don’t enjoy playing on the other systems and we have a lot of respect for the work that Miyamoto-san and Nintendo do," stated Xbox Live boss John Schappert. "But I think it’s a logical extension of our Gamercard, Gamertag and Achievements."
"People want to personalize their Gamertag and so when we look to the future and think about building a brand new Xbox experience, Avatars is a logical extension of that innovation. I think it’s another avenue of self-expression and there are a lot of opportunities here for consumers."
There, I hope that's set the record straight and silences those wagging tongues forevermore. Shame on you jaded gamers for thinking that Avatars were anything but the result of Microsoft's ever-impressive originality. Shame on you indeed.

It’d be remiiss to say that wii don’t enjoy playing on the other systems and wii have a lot of respect for the work that Miiyamoto-san and Nintendo do," stated Xbox Live boss John Schappert. "But I think it’s a logical extension of our Gamiircard, Gamiirtag and Achiivemiints."
A good idea is a good idea even if the idea was used in a slightly different form elsewhere. What works works and this will work and probably better than the Miis do.
Hey, I totally agree that a good idea is a good idea worth doing, but it's the fact that MS has the gall to call it "innovation" on their part that makes me laugh.
Who ever said it was a good idea in the first place?
How does the above statement set the record straight?
Anyways, I dont care if its a good idea or a bad idea, more options and features is well... more options and features.
Wheither its orignal or not a better use of the idea has been set in motion. i agree with the innovaion crap but its an innovation in the way its been attached to the already thriving (compared to ps3/wii) online network.
i think keeping it fun and cheerful too will help the appeal as a realistic home-esq look of people will most likely want me to hurl, knowing some of the people on my xbox list i think its for the best theyre never represented in a photo realistic way.
First, you'll have to buy a 360 version of LightWave 3D for a mere 32,000 Microsoft Points. However, Microsoft Points will only be sold in groups of 35,000.
Then you'll have to wait on a lengthy download that will require an update by the time you are ready to run the software. The update will fix menu glitches, but break your ability to share Avatars online.
Once you finally get the software up and running, you'll have to render your own 3D model to be used as an avatar. However, Microsoft will fear 3D penises and only allow people on your friend's list to see your creation -- replacing it with a 3D model of Master Chief covered in Mountain Dew logos for the general public.
Finally, if you ever want to play games on a friend's Xbox, sorry, but you'll have to re-download LightWave on that Xbox and transfer your DRM authorization via their web-based tool.
See Jim, it is innovative! Avatars are more advanced, safe from piracy, and great for the casual crowd!
/sarcasm.
Seriously though...avatars were around a while ago, and to assume that the wii was the first successful use of them or something?
Just another side of the argument. : P
I got nothing and going through online withdraw.
What a waste by MS on something that was lame the first time around, and yes, it is going to be the Mii60 now.
Of course if you wanted to be a dick you could say that Nintendo totally stole the idea of mii from that horrible WeeMee thing on MSN Messenger and whoever came up with XMB probably did it while using the menu on his Media Center PC.
I guess it's just cooler to call out Microsoft though eh?
Conservative blowhards are right; video games are ruining you all.
Who ever said that?
eh?
eh?
I want my avatar to be a little emo.
So sad, they had the potential to actually create something totally bad ass, like exaggerated characters that look like monsters, dwarf, stuff like FPS/WoW. Nope, instead they steal Nintendo's boring Miis... nope MS cant be original, to risky, we leave that to Nintendo and Sony.
lol, sarcasm? Or does it not count because they ripped off stuff available for donkey's years on the PC, rather than another console?
I just want to know where this "Casual Market" was all this time, and why they had to come out and bring wagglefest fail with them.
I have a personalized gamertag, I have a nice picture of kage from vf5 on it.
I DON'T WANT YOUR NINTENDO SHIT ON MY XBOX
if I wanted a mii, I'd buy a wii.
Really I think with live they tried to do the same thing. They said voice chat and messaging will be standardized across all games. Matchmaking also standardized and I don't know that some people truly understand what that meant. I can pull out a copy of Worms 3d for my xbox and still play it online, of course no one is playing it now but I can if I want to ask my friends to play some ancient game with me. Now MS did finally bend to EA and some other Devs with 360 to allow them to run their own servers which is both a good and bad thing, it grants more features and control but does limit the longevity of the game to how long the servers are maintained(I really wish more games had the ability to host servers yourself). But from Patches to online interactions MS has built a solid ship with Live(even if they did do as hot with hardware reliability).
So yes MS is taking a queue from the competition here but they polishing it too in their ways. I really think things like the 1 vs 100 and uno rush game competitions have potential. They have been running contest like these for a while but to have a place to find current events and contest going on is a great community feature. These are casual titles but I think even core gamers like some casual play but hey this could easily spill into the core games. I am sure there will be tons of there own touches and ideas buried beneath MS's Mii's but really does it matter they are all just taking ideas that existed and making them their own with their little tweaks.
Nintendo did not invent the avatar nor did Sony. The area I see MS really copying is the using of a standardized avatar in multiple games as part of a SDK but I think both avatars and Home have more potential to take these further since they are not onlineaphobic. Even Sony took a cue from Mii's in there Home and probably some cue's from social games like second life but that does not diluter their little touches that make Home a Sony Product. I'm sure Avatars will innovate in their own way just like Home will and hopefully Nintendo will continue to.
innovation indeed.
My dream of being an improperly proportioned man on the internets can now be fulfilled! Hooray!
