Avatar clothing to be an unlockable feature in future 360 games photo

So, Microsoft had Rare create the Avatar system for the New Xbox Experience in an obvious attempt to replicate the popularity of the Mii. And then they did... well, not much with it. There are a few games which feature the personalized characters, such as Kingdom for Keflings and a few free packs of clothing have shown up with little fanfare. This lack of follow-through may be about to change.

Rare has revealed to VG247 that new clothing options may soon be available as unlockable items in certain games. They claim to be, "working with multiple partners," who want to make use of Avatars in their games, though none have actually been announced as of this time.

There's certainly a precedent for this, as Gamerpics and Themes have already been made available for playing games. Personally, I'd like to see something like the above image as an option, although I fear I might have to wait for Saints Row 3 to have such a dream become reality. What sorts of avatar clothing choices would you like and what games would you demand that you earn them through?

This is a good idea. I've always been of the opinion that if we get game related items, from our games, to tweak our avatars, I'd be more up for it, than creating a doppelganger of myself. Everyday people can be very mundane.

Come on Capcom, I want my Chris Redfield and Strider Hiryu outfits.

Random Fable duds, COG armor, Banjo shorts & backpack... Any mascot/franchise-type character's duds would be cool, really. Those Street Fighter outfits that look fugly in Home would look a lot slicker on a deformed little caricature, y'know?

There's tons of possibilities for this, so we shall see...

@Cotton
The Home story is about buying clothes from games, this is about unlocking clothes via the games themselves. I'm sure home will have the same thing and I can guarantee that MS will start charging for Avatar clothes eventually, but there's the big difference right now.

@Cotton McKnight:

I don't know, is it ok? I have no experience with Home, as I do not own a PS3 yet. I mean, there are obvious differences between the two services and I don't personally see any appeal in entering a virtual environment which seems to serve no other purpose than to be shown advertising.

Sure, there are ads on the 360 as well. Lots of them. Years of internet use have allowed me to become skilled at completely ignoring such ads when I have no choice but to have them in front of me. Home, however, strikes me as volunteering to be advertised to.

I don't understand what implication you are making. Clothing options for avatars being just like Home? Well, we still don't know how that's going to shake out on either service yet and a lot of this is speculation.

Perhaps you could explain what you mean in more detail?

Here it is. Achievements now have impact. Well, sorta.

Wait, I read it wrong. My idea is cooler. Get an achievement, unlock an outfit.

This is a great idea and what the avatars should have been used for from the get go. Same with furniture and stuff in Home. No one should be expected to buy that shit; make it unlockable in games instead.

@ Cotton-

Maybe it's because Sony promised so much with Home and didn't deliver? I mean, even the biggest Xbox fanboys knew that the NXE was just a new menu, some avatars and a few new features. Home was supposed to be like PS3's version of Second Life, and was supposed to blow us all away. When you pump up something that much and it turns out to be a bunch of bland wannabe-Sims environments with half-assed things to do and virtual furniture to buy, there will be backlash.

On the 360 side, the old dashboard had ads, the new one has ads. Who gives a shit? Sometimes, these ads even serve a purpose. I know a lot of people who own a 360, I'm the only one who reads gaming blogs or sites. Most of my friends wouldn't even know there was a new arcade game out if there wasn't an ad for it or if I didn't tell them. It's not as if they're checking Major Nelson's blog.

I don't recall anyone here even comparing the two until you did so. MS never claimed that the NXE was like a game in and of itself where whole new worlds would open up to you. It's a more attractive way to access a bunch of shit, and that's the function it performs. Honestly, you sound like a fanboy with hurt feelings and a chip on your shoulder here.

This is a fantastic idea. Themes, gamerpics, avatar clothes. These should be unlockable items, not something you pay for with real money.

@ Cotton-

So much anger!

Who pays to read Xbox ads? You know, you can have the privilege of "reading" those ads for free with a silver membership.

My soapbox? I didn't turn the "unlockable Avatar clothing" story into the 381,837,582,184th PS3 vs. Xbox 360 thread- you did. No one here even mentioned Home or the PS3 until you did.

I also never complained about Home. I offered an opinion of Home and more specifically, why people are disappointed with it. Misrepresenting the positions of others to further your own weak straw man argument that you're trying to force everyone into is what is retarded.

But, allow me to rephrase your own statement- "complaining about being 'bombarded' by ads that you don't have to look at and don't have to see in order to access your games, music, pictures, friends or other gaming related features of your 360 is just fucking retarded."

Unlocking things through in-game actions/achievements seemed like a no-brainer to me. Just give me a stupid gamer picture, anything. I wish we could choose the pictures that go along with achievements for our gamer pictures, because I would totally rock some of them from The Simpsons Game.

Conrad, are you (in your avatar) and Snoop wearing the same cool ass hat? Keep your pimp hand strong.

@ Cotton-

You actually wrote "No anger", then said "fuck you and anyone who wants to join in" in the same paragraph. You sir, are an idiot.

I don't pay to get rid of ads that, quite frankly, don't bother me. Again, neither I nor anyone else on this comment thread drew any comparison between PS3 ads in Home and ads on the 360 dashboard. That was all you. I also never complained about having ads on the dashboard, so I don't care if they're still there. I pay to access the features of the service that matter to me, not to get rid of ads.

Again, you're trying to force a straw man argument (look it up) and acting like a bitter fanboy. There's no reason that any rational human being should get this worked up over a fucking video game console. Calm down or go out and get some human interaction and/or sunlight, and try to have a sense of perspective.

Oh, and learn to carry on a logical debate without frothing at the mouth and assigning positions to others.

You never realized that text could convey tone? Just like you never realized that going into a 360 thread and starting a PS3 vs. 360 debate was fanboy behavior?

And now you're an internet tough guy, too. It's like all of the online stereotypes rolled into one!

In the magical pretend world that you speak of, I would have done nothing because the legions of soldiers in my magical army would have descended upon you and had you drawn and quartered. Then, I would have hopped back into my flying car and flown to an island full of hot chicks and adoring fans, and while I was being flown there, I would play a version of Home on my PS3 that didn't suck.

Also, I hate to double post, but this is too funny.

From Cotton's blog:

"I’m not one of those guys that use the anonymity of the Internet to talk tough."

From a comment he wrote less than 15 minutes ago:

"If I were in front of you I would have said it smiling, anger free. And watched you do absolutely nothing."

This from a guy who calls others hypocrites. With that, I am done with Cotton McKnight and his wonderful straw man arguments.

Would my "failed wit" be countering wit of your own, then? Can you show me where you have shown even an ounce of wit or humor (other than the unintentional humor that your comments are chock-full of)? Do so, and I will quickly get to "countering" it.

Again, have a nice day and it's been amusing. Have a great day being a total badass and definitely not being even a bit touchy or defensive about your shiny black PS3 and the wonderful world that is Playstation Home. Maybe one day when Home doesn't suck, I'll go there again and your avatar could boldly tell mine "Fuck you", which I would suspect would be what you would deem to be reality.

The difference between Home selling people SF4 themed clothes and being able to unlock, say Ryu's Gi for your goofy xbox avatar is that one costs money and the other comes with the game.

Just like gamer score vs trophies, Miscrosoft made a simpler, nicer system.

I think both Home and the NXE avatars are stupid, but at least this stuff's effectively free.
