The only way you lose your content is if you're too stupid to remove the hard drive. On PS3, most people don't have the tools or patience to get the HDD out. Oh, and I can trade or sell my HDD a hell of a lot easier too if I decide to get a new one. Not to mention transfer my data easier with that cable at my local game store.

And yeah, you can redownload anything you have previously downloaded, which includes avatar clothes, which you can redownload on another console using your account, thereby negating the 'avatar incompatibility' argument. Plus avatars are slowly being supported in games, and my entire friends list can see my avatar (unlike Home), so while it may not be the most useful thing in the world, it isn't useless.
