Everyone's favorite indie music game that could, Audiosurf, has become quite the force to be reckoned with on Steam. According to Valve's data, it managed to top the sales charts for both dollars and units sold on the distribution service for the month of February.
"This kind of runaway success for an independent title is a tribute to Dylan's work and millions of informed gamers connecting via Steam each week" says Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve.
While I've personally told every last one of my gamer friends to give Audiosurf a spin, I can't help but wonder how many of you do not like the game. Anyone feel like sharing?

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I keed, I keed! Audiosurf rocks my socks.
I also heard great things about rez hd and thought that was about as fun as a trip to the dentist.
any chance of this ever making it to the XBLA
And that reminds me, shameless plug, Audiosurf highscoring contest here.
Ya. I'm a little late.
(not directed at anyone in particular)
JACK SHIT CAME OUT IN FEBUARY BESIDES AUDIOSURF
Fuck yeah, Audiosurf. ;) It is indeed just as awesome as everyone's been saying.
@qwerty: Create a cblog post or something. This isn't a real good place for such discussions.
You can't just pick it up for $10 or go for a legit demo? How is this "the good side of torrenting"?
The piratez usual excuse for dl cracked games is because "games are too expensive" or "pubs don't give out demos, how can i buy it if i don't know i like it". Neither of which apply here.
It's an indie developer that's gotta eat. Get the legit demo or put down your $10.
But for a game that takes a song and makes the entire track on the spot, it's pretty damn good.
I love Audiosurf, mostly the mono characters. I found the magic of "riding a song" loses its luster when you're constantly focusing on a bunch of colored blocks, whereas in the Mono styles the blocks fit perfectly with the beat and flow of the track.
Yea, but would you like Guitar Hero if the note chart was nothing like the song? No you would not, I must say I am a hardass when it comes to technology and programming like this. I just expected the whole generation to be alot closer to the song.
They should at least allow you to make your own track so it is closer to the beat.
Stop playing on easy! The game DOES sync the appearance of the blocks with the song notes; then it removes blocks based on difficulty. On Elite mode with the Ironmode, you'll be completely buried under incoming blocks, so much you can't hope to dodge them, because the game isn't played like Guitar Hero and you aren't trying to hit every note that comes down the path.
You're whining about nothing.
Yeah, it's not meant to replicate an instrument, or else I'd probably be upset too.
I'm not playing on easy :< I just would rather have the beats closer to the accuracy of my two other favorite music based games, Frequency and Amplitude
Comparing it to guitar hero doesnt quite work, because it has to generate tracks for ANY song you put in it, and it doesnt focus on the one instrument. The only consistant thing is that the track bounces to the beat, if its a good steady one (again, play Led Zep to see what i mean!). Otherwise, a block could be generated from any part of the song. You should be able to tell though.
Making your own tracks could be cool, i guess, but would defeat the purpose of the game - you could make any track for anything. Also it would make the leaderboards pretty pointless, and i do love em so...
That's not right... let me fix it:
"This kind of runaway success for an independent title is a tribute to Dylan's work and millions of informed gamers connecting via Destructoid.com each day" says Jason Holtman
*Angry Rant, likely to only piss people off* Every indie game these days is some tired idea with some music theme (Every enemy makes a different sound! Make your own soundtrack!). I used to be intrigued, but now it seems like the kind of laziness that turned me from big studio titles to indie games in the first place. I would like gameplay experimentation, not ambiance experimentation. Change the way I play, not what I hear while playing something I've played before. Rant over.
You make a good point, but I don't think that is allll indie developers have been making, plus its still a very good game.
:P
@DaveKap:
I thought the same thing!
By the time I had picked mono (my most played character, so naturally I chose it out of habit), gotten a screen capture, exited out of Audiosurf, and realized that putting dollar signs on those blocks lacked any sort of sense at all, it was too late and I had to say fuck it (I needed to drop my TV off at the repair shop before they closed, so I was in a hurry).
The moral of the story: procrastination causes Grim to divide by zero.
i might give it another try though.
Eh, maybe I just don't have the attention span for it though.
It's the good side of torrenting because he bought it because he liked what he torrented. The demo gives you like three or four songs and an ultra-limited selection of "characters". I also have to throw my hat* in on the torrented-then-bought... pile-thing. Is it a pile if there are just the two hats?
*It is a stylish aluminum foil tricorner.
I don't play it as much as I did at first...mostly because I'm just staring into space a lot while I wait for Brawl to show up.
Still, the game is amazing...and even people who just want to see some neat visuals can at least set it to Free Ride mode. I've actually had some major fun doing Free Ride with Rush songs.
