Attention, everyone buying L4D2: I have dibs on Ellis photo

Last year, when Destructoid's staff laid dibs on the survivors in Left 4 Dead, I saw things in Francis that nobody else did. They were so quick to write him off as the least desirable survivor and that simply was not the case. I still feel confident that I made the right decision and Francis was my partner for most every game I played.

Now that I have watched my associates unnecessarily malign Ellis, I once again feel compelled to not only defend the underdog but to show why he is clearly the best possible choice.

I have dibs on Ellis.

Here's why.

Ellis

He's the most physically prepared.

Just looking at the way he's dressed can tell us a lot about Ellis' preparedness for the end times. For example, he's the only one wearing a hat. A hat is an essential item to have in the event that you should have to survive in the wilderness, as it's likely our survivors will have to do at some point. Nobody needs a sunburn on their face and the brim's shade would give an advantage in bright daylight.

Also, it's a well-established fact that rednecks love firearms. Ellis has probably had more than a little bit of experience using them and likely more than anyone else in the game. I can't count the number of times I've heard a redneck say something like, "when the shit goes down in this country..." or " when the revolution comes..." so my keen sense of stereotypes tells me that he has a plan of some kind. Hell, he may even have belonged to a militia.

Ellis' knowledge of armed combat may not be as extensive as, say, Bill from the previous game. Of the four survivors in Left 4 Dead 2, however, his cultural background would seem to place him at a bit of an advantage over his compatriots. Of course, just having the best awareness of firearms isn't enough to survive. Guess it's a good thing for Ellis that...

Ellis

He's also the most emotionally prepared.

When your life before the zombie apocalypse consists of living in a trailer park, you aren't taking as much of a step down. If you don't have anything to lose, it's much easier to walk away. Ellis doesn't have to deal with any concerns about how the whole world is going to hell. His prior existence probably did not look much less bleak than this one.

Nobody has a better attitude toward all of this than Ellis. He cracks more jokes in a lighthearted manner than anyone else and seems determined not to let the end of the world get him down. That's the kind of person I would want to be in the zombie apocalypse. Which ties into my next point...

Ellis

He's lovable.

How can you not like Ellis? While Coach might be more cuddly due to his size, Ellis is the guy everyone will want to hug. There's an odd inquisitiveness about his character which appeals to me, like a babe shoved out into the world who can't see its ugliness yet.

Yeah, he can be a bit of a doofus, but Ellis is really quite charming in his own way.  He may not be the brains of the outfit but he strikes me as a loyal, stand-up guy. When the chips are down, I know that Ellis will be there to help. I'm not so sure about the other survivors. And that's because...

Ellis

He's self-sacrificing.

Didn't you see how eager Ellis was to get hit by nearly every special infected possible in the introductory movie? That man has balls of steel to allow himself to get caught in all those situations just to give his fellow survivors a better chance of survival. What a nice guy!

Of course, there's always the possibility that I'm wrong and he's not the selfless hero I think him to be. Which makes it a good thing that...

Ellis

I've seen Deliverance.

I'm not saying that there's going to be any sort of cornholing going on in Left 4 Dead 2. All I'm saying is that we're in the South in a desperate time and anything could happen. If it's going to, I'd much rather be the guy who seems likely to be performing said cornhole.

And Nick does have a purty mouth.

But if you like him, that's fine by me.

So far the choices have totally represented the editor's perceived personalities, unfortunately, Valve has yet again refrained from giving the female character much more personality than "Well, she's a chick".

If anything, isn't Rochelle the best choice because then you don't have to look at her? You can focus on watching and listening to the 3 other characters who are blatently better.

@ChildOfLore

Since when does Valve have a habit of making female characters boring? I've never been a fan but everyone seems to absolutely love Alex Vance's personality/character. The female scientist from Half Life 2 who's name I forget was also an interesting character who definitely had more personality than being a girl character.

Also Zoey was clearly not just the girl, she was the zombie movie geek/buff who in most polls I've seen was easily the most popular survivor from the first game. Rochelle fails so far because we haven't seen what her personality is, she hardly says anything in the demo and trailers. I'm sure that she like all the other 7 survivors so far has some personality trait, we just haven't seen it yet or maybe it isn't as pronounced.

@ChildOfLore
Are you kidding me? Zoey wasn't exactly a deep character, but she had personality for sure!

Let's also not forget that Valve is responsible for the greatest female character of all time, Alyx Vance.

Ha, this is 100% right - Francis was by FAR the best in the first one, and it seems that Ellis will be in the second.

Mind you, most people I've spoken to have liked Ellis best. A strong favourite I'm thinking - so be prepared to fight for him in the lobbies!

I thought I was the only one that loved Francis. His comical hatred of everything wasnt annoying, it was endearing! But deep down under that tough guy exterior, you could tell there was a big ol softee inside, like when he sobs a bit when bill or Louis die, or when he whispers "momma" after being killed. Still though, I preferred Bill. But I HAVE DIBS ON COACH!

Ellis is one of The Scout's 8 brothers.

That could be another reason why you would want him.

Although, Nick is still
my pick because he looks like The Spy and Tommy Vercetti (GTA:VC)

I like how Ellis is like a little kid.

"Do you know what suck the heads means, 'cause I came down here with Keith once, and he didn't know. I mean, it's nothing bad, it has to do with eatin'."

And I also like how him and Rochelle have a little bit of a thing going on, whether it be a Mother/Son thing, or a Crush thing, Rochelle calls Ellis things like "Honey" and "Sweety" as if she's looking out for him, because Coach is man enough on his own, and Nick is a super douche who doesn't matter.

I think Ellis is going to be my choice as well.

Heh, your justification of Ellis has almost convinced me to play as Ellis instead of Coach. But Ellis doesn't look like he eats chocolate or sings, so those are counts against him. I guess I'll make him my second whenever some jackass takes Coach first.

@Risonhighmer I think it's just a girl thing. My sister used to call me "sweetheart" or "hon" whenever she was mad or i did something stupid, and she would do that to just about anyone, even people a good deal older than her. i've seen this sorta thing in a lot of girls however.

I called Ellis. Originally it was because, hey, you know, looks a bit like scout, but as I've played him, I realized I loved him for an even better reason.

He is the hopelessly optimistic, danger prone, gung-ho one.
I play Louis in L4D. Famous for lines like "I've got a good feeling about this!" and "STAIRS ARE GOOD FOR YOU." I like these characters, the slightly retarded, usually attacked, vaguely adorable ones.

Also, Ellis gets the best nicknames. Coach calls him Youngin, Nick calls him Overalls (or Ellis with a retarded accent), and Ro (cute) calls him sweetie. He's basically the most lovable, and while he SOUNDS like an ignorant, asshole, redneck prick, he's actually one of the nicest guys.

Also, we share a love of horses.
