You haven't forgotten about League of Legends: Clash of Fates already, have you? Here's a quick refresh: it's an online multiplayer game in the same vein as the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients.
As a matter of fact, part of the core team who created DotA Allstars is working with Riot Games' on League of Legends. In other words, if you enjoy playing DotA like so very many gamers continue to do today, chances are LoL will be right up your alley.
While we're making comparisons, I cannot say I'm surprised that League of Legends looks somewhat similar to Warcraft III's art direction. I won't know if that's a good or a bad thing until I get to play the game, but what I do know is that there's a character named "Fiddlesticks." Dibs!
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied: "bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

ok Chronic... dude... I play DoTa on Garena... during rush hour... that place has more that 300000 players playing... on a slow day I see atleast 100000-200000 people playing...
if this game is as good if not better... and is reasonably priced... I would buy it so quick... so quick... umm... it would be REALLY quick...
DoTA is a custom game that only accommodates one map and has inherent restricted game mechanics by being a custom map for a pre-existing game. While true the core basic game play is the same as DoTA, League of Legends breaks the restrictions and allows for expansion in which DoTA is unable to grow. League of Legends in it's final version is gonna sport multiple maps and different game types where DoTA is only really limited to one, with slight variations.
Granted this game is not for everyone, but I think it is unfair to say that this is just a clone of DoTA.
sylphx summed it up nicely. Also, I happen to agree that Demigod is more appealing of the two, but this will be a good alternative for anyone with a weaker computer.
This game looks F'ing awesome - the creators of DotA are making it, but with tons of extra features that DotA never had. Stat tracking, matchmaking, some type of meta-game advancement - makes me stiff just typing.
DotA can never really have more than 1 map, auto-matchmaking, immunity from game breaking changes by someone else*, ladder rankings (in game), freedom from having to type -rd (or -ap, -apem, -cm, etc.) an interface designed specifically for the gameplay, and so on.
There's a lot of advantages to making it a stand alone game even if it is a 'clone'.
Also the visuals may look like WC3 but with good reason. You get performance, clarity, and with the graphic style a lot of flexibility in types of characters that fit which is perfect for a game with so many heroes that are supposed to be unique. Everything from a little girl with a teddy bear, to a guy with a giant scroll on his back fit in the game world. The more unique the heroes look the more accessible the game is (people won't confuse hero A from hero B).
*For example if a WC3 patch came out changing the way STR, INT, and AGI affected a hero then all of DotA's heroes would have to be rebalanced.
Please keep us up to date on this. I was looking forward to Demigod which is also suppose to be like DotA, but with 7 heroes and basically the same battle arena, I don't think i'm going to pick it up any longer. But if this turns out to be good i will mos def grab it.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. People already have DotA.
