Atlus spoils us again, soundtrack CD to be packaged with The Dark Spire photo

Atlus really does love us all, and they're showing it again with another expanded packaging. This time, we'll be scoring the soundtrack to The Dark Spire when the DS title hits retail on April 14th.

The disc comes packed with twenty-four tracks, with both the modern and "retro" versions used in the two different aesthetic styles available for the first-person RPG. If you want to get a taste of the music you'll hear in the game, Atlus has provided a few samples for your enjoyment.

And it wouldn't be an Atlus press release these days without a wickedly funny quote:

"Our census data indicates that given the choice between only a game, and a better-packaged game with a free bonus soundtrack, a significant number of our fans seem to prefer getting free extras," analyzed Aram Jabbari, Manager of Public Relations and Sales.  "We don't want to rush to any conclusions here, but it seems possible that people enjoy free bonus things along with their games.  Hopefully, we're actually reading the data correctly this time, unlike that study on whether or not our fans enjoyed bonus live scorpions with their games.  We really blew it on that one, and we apologize to those affected."

Best. Games. Company. Ever. Now, where are my bonus live scorpions?

[Thanks, Seigfreid!]

Stuff like this is EXACTLY why Atlus and NIS seem to do well in an environment that otherwise looks hostile to games without mass-market appeal.

I got this email earlier today. Atlus is officially the best company ever. It seems like Atlus is coming out with a great new announcement every few days, Colette said. I totally agree.

I want my soundtrack CD with SMT Devil Survivor too though PLZ?

I wish Atlus had direct access to my bank account. It would really make things easier for both of us.

I love Atlus for everything they've been doing. Truly an awesome company, but I'm just wondering how long can they keep this up? Do the games they develop/publish make them enough money to make this sort of treatment a permanent thing?

Wow I actually might buy this...cough like all my other games.. Their thing with spoiling us reminds me of stories from people who used to play games that came with huge amounts of stuff in the case, I like it!

Diverse: I think I remember reading that Atlus's Spoils program is for all of 2009, so for most games this year, expect to see a lot of soundracks/artbooks. :)

Diverse: Atlus is a company in the business of making money, If they were losing money on these programs they wouldn't be doing them.

And it sure isn't hurting sales.

@Garison: Oh really? I didn't think it was just for '09. Still, it's sweet that we're getting these things.

@Gen Eric Gui: I'm pretty sure I know how a business runs. I'm just saying that Atlus' games aren't exactly known for their record breaking sales numbers, and that these spoil programs are fairly new. If sales didn't pick up then I don't see how they can continue on with giving us this free stuff packaged with games at a regular price.

Atlus games are very popular within a niche audience.

Atlus tends to make up for its ridiculously niche appeal by knowing precisely who will and will not be buying what they sell, and marketing heavily towards that segment. It helps to explain why, even as recently as the original release of Persona 3, Atlus games were so disgustingly rare at any given point in time.

Their deals with Amazon are also a sign. People sometimes wonder how they can get such low discounts on certain items at that store, it's for the same reason, to cut out excess inventory.

I will definitely be getting this... I'm digging the idea of having two versions of each tune to match the two graphic styles in the game, I didn't know the variation carried over into the soundtrack. Awesome...

"We don't want to rush to any conclusions here, but it seems possible that people enjoy free bonus things along with their games."

The principle behind pre-order freebies at work, huh? Of course people love free stuff with their purchases! I mean, while I do like the trend that they're putting stuff like a soundtrack CD in with games, they're going to shoot themselves in the foot when we demand that they provide more. =P No complaints here though, since we're winning out either way.

This is what in my mind is a REAL video game company! I use to be all a big fan of Nintendo, Square Enix, etc. and I still am. But Atlus is the kind of company that knows how to cater to its fans and supporters, and how to generate sales! Plus, they're able to have fun with its clientele, as with the whole "live scorpions" and such, and its very nice to see a lighthearted and small company that really cares about who they're selling stuff too, and not focusing purely on profits or domination and such. ^_^

Yeah I believe Atlus' new MO is to release EVERY game with something extra now. Which is totally the best idea ever.

Atlus also tends to do low print runs, a 100,000 sales is like a million for them.
