Quantcast

I admit that I have a fetish for obscure Japanese video games. This is a condition brought about in the 90s when every single awesome game on the Genesis and Super Nintendo would be released months before in Japan and we spent hours crawling the back pages of Gamepro and EGM for the cheapest POS importer. Times haven't changed much, but at the very least Atlus is making life easy on us retro RPG gamers that eat this stuff up.

That said, we were happy to spot a wealth of information on NeoGAF about their next import title: Etrian Odyssey / Sekaiju no Meikyuu. Here's what we know so far:
Etrian Odyssey is a first-person turn-based dungeon-exploring DS RPG being developed by Atlus' R&D1 team ... The general thrust of the game is navigating through enormous first-person dungeons. Along the way, you can use the touch screen to draw your own maps on a grid, like graph paper; you'll be able to place icons for various important things. Along the way you engage in challenging turn-based RPG battles. You customize your characters via a class/skill system.

Turn-based combat, ladies! Atlus is the same company that brought over River City Ransom EX, Trauma Center, and Rule of Rose -- oddball niche games we never would have seen without unsavory mods and many import dollars spent.  The game is announced for a Nintendo DS state-side release this year, rumored as early as May 2007. But will it suck?

When I first glanced at the title of the article I thought it read "Adults bring Japanese dung crawler".

Interesting, specially the bottom screen there is happening a lot. not too excited about the first person view tho. For some odd reason I always like to see my character.

Yah, not too keen on the first person, but I can totally let tehat slide as long as the gameplay is there

Could be cool, I might have to pick it up tomorrow if it doesn't cost too much. If I do pick it up, I'll tell you guys what I think.

Atlus seems to like America. Sadly it probably will be underapriciated as the rest.

The game looks beautiful for a DS game. Just goes to show you what good artwork can do to make up for the lack in graphical power.

(Sadly, I'm not a first person (fantasy) RPG fan)
