Atlus being merged by parent company photo

The parent company of game publisher Atlus, Index Holdings, announced today its intentions to merge their mobile developer Index with Atlus. The move is intended to increase efficiency and better utilize group resources. Index Holdings acquired Atlus in 2006 through a stock purchase. The merger is expected to take place on October 1st.

After the merger, Atlus as a company will cease to exist but that hardly means the end of the brand. A public relations representative for Index Holdings has stated that games will continue to be released under the Atlus brand for the time being.

They're idiots if they ever drop the Atlus name. Just hearing Atlus puts money symbols in my eyes. $_$

Oh good. I had heard talk of this from NeoGAF but they hadn't said anything of the fate of the brand yet. Hardly surprising, but good news nonetheless. I was hoping they wouldn't toss out the Atlus name after all those years just because of a silly merger.

This made my heart skip a few beats out of minor panic. Good to know business as usual should be the order of the day. If not, there will be hell to pay.

I can't see this doing anything positive for company.

They better keep their philosophy of respecying the fans and not become a bullshit SquareEnix.

Just hearing "Atlus" fills me with hate. They make all these brilliant games, none of which see a European release unless a publisher over here picks them up...

If this merger means Atlus can have more money and cover more ground so they can set up a European division, then this fucking awesome.

Otherwise, this is just pathetic

I really, REALLY hope they keep the Atlus name! They're my favorite game company, that would be like nintendo changing its name!

Quoted from Kotaku:
""Atlus" as a brand can continue; however, Atlus will no longer be registered on the Japanese stock exchange. According to a spokesperson, the Atlus name will continue for both game development and retail sales."
So I guess they still keep the Atlus name

I guess from a business perspective the merger is good, but I'd rather have them keep the name. I'd buy a frickin' rock from them if it was named the "Atlus Rock".

Atlus merging!? How hee-ho-rrible! Nothing good comes of merging halve the time, just look at how fucked up Square Enix is. Not all companies end up like them, but I'm pretty pessimistic about the whole thing and I'll remain so until I can be proven otherwise by....by.....Strega.inc? Would Megidatlus be better? I'm not good at names.

I'll remain optimistic, but I swear to god, if they get rid of the Atlus name eventually, I'm going to be very disappointed in them. It's amazing what they've done in the past few years really. Atlus has gone from "those weird guys who release really weird Japanese games" to "those awesome guys who release really awesome Japanese games AND also really respect their fans." They've built such a level of trust that when you just mention the word Atlus, a sizable portion of the gaming community listens. You don't want to get rid of that level of respect in the gamming world.

But...I might forgive them if it means getting P5 sooner.

I'm not too worried.
The same company owns Madhouse, and they still put out some damn fine shows.

Wow! Crazy. I buy games based on the Atlus brand sometimes! I wouldn't even blink an eye at a "Index Holdings" game.

Everyone keeps talking about preserving the brand name, but what about the actual people that made the brand? Are they being sacked? Will they continue to work as usual under a new name or even the Atlus "brand"? Saying, "Atlus as a company will cease to exist" does not fill me with any positive thoughts here.

People that make great games > Some stupid name

Considering the past examples of company mergers I can expect NOTHING GOOD to come of this.

It shouldn't change too much. Index Holdings have owned Atlus since 2006, when they pretty much became the awesome company they are now. I doubt it'll be too much of a change, especially if there aren't massive layoffs.

I don't really have a good feeling about this. Mergers generally are the code for the beginning of asset stripping, and that'd be too damn bad.

Kinda like when Westwood studios and Origin we absorbed by EA. All goodness faded away into obscurity.

This is great news. Now Atlus can forget publishing obscure gems from Japan and focus entirely on making mobile phone games. And here, I thought one of my favorite publishers would never have the opportunity to fade into ignominy.

Cram it, world.

After Atlus refused to acknowledge that 3d dot heroes was a broken game and refused to patch it, I will never, ever purchase an Atlus product.

It's a fantastic throwback of a game.

As long as they keep sending the majority of their games over to NA, I'm alright with it. I'll just have to bust out Rockin' Kats if I want to see their retro logo again.

@tgammet - There's been absolutely nothing to suggest there will be any layoffs whatsover. "Atlus will cease to exist as a company" just means in the Japanese stock market they will no longer be referred to as "Atlus". As a game company nothing should change.

@Herpeas - 3D DOT HEROES IS NOT AN ATLUS GAME! Goddamn I'm tired of trying to explain the difference between Atlus developed games and games Atlus USA publishes. This merger is about Atlus of Japan, not the publishing branch that is Atlus USA.
