Atlus announces Strange Journey for North America photo

We've been patiently waiting for Atlus to announce the DS game Strange Journey. The next in the line of Shin Megami Tensei games looks...well, strange, and we dig that in Atlus games.

It just came out in Japan last month, so hats off to Atlus for working on this so quickly. For those that missed the earlier talk on the game, it's a sci-fi first-person role-playing game that has you exploring a hole that opened up in from the bottom of our planet. Inside? You guessed it: Weird-ass demons (over 300 now!) you can summon and use against others.

We're thrilled that the release date is set some time in the Spring of 2010. The word from Japan is that this game is awesome.

In our gallery below we have plenty of brand new English screenshots of the game.

SMT fans, where you at? Are you looking forward to this?

*brings out list*

1. Am I an SMT fan? Check
2. Do I love Atlus? Check
3. Am I interested in this? Double check.

First quarter next year is going to annihilate my wallet. So much good stuff.

We all knew it was coming, but that doesn't stop this from being amazing news. Considering that Etrian Odyssey 1 & 2 and Devil Survivor were the "tryouts" for this game and were each absolutely phenominal, this game is going to rock my world. I can just feel it.

There's also word from Atlus Japan that this -is- the official SMT4. Which is even more freaking awesome.

I really want to play this game because it looks like "the thing" only set in the shin megami tensei universe.

@ pedroavy2003

I really hope someone at Atlus is just an Adam Sandler fan or something.

BLAH BLAH BLAH ATLUS.
BLAH BLAH BLAH MUST BUY.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI.

I think I need to retire from posting comments on Atlus releases. I never have anything clever or insightful to say, and 90% of the time when I hear news of a new SMT game in real life, my first reaction is to scream like a little girl.

I'll wait till the reviews come out. I'm loving Persona 4, but I hated Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. I guess it depends on how much random grinding the game demands.

Now if only I was buying a DS instead of a PSP, I would snap this up in a second.

I loved Devil Survivor! I still have 4 more routes to go (Gin, Yuzu, Kaido, Atsuro) though, this should keep me busy until this one comes.

I secretly hope though that I don't have to play through the whole thing 6 times to see it all. I don't have much time these days to pull of something like that.

If anything I prefer the more "traditional" SMT games to the offshoots, so I'll definitely be reserving this.

Not remotely surprising, but great news all the same. Can't wait, probably my most anticipated game on any console right now.

"I secretly hope though that I don't have to play through the whole thing 6 times to see it all."

Considering this is effectively a true mainline SMT game, and those are all about your choices that result in different endings, it's pretty much a guarantee you won't be able to see everything the first time through. Unfortunately(?) this is supposedly a much longer game than Devil Survivor too, so playing through it multiple times to see the different endings will require even more effort.

I only cleared one route in Devil Survivor, but color me wanting this. If only because it's as close to SMT4 we're gonna get, and it's the only time I'm going to get close to playing a core SMT game.

Yeah it does look a lot like it. Does anybody know if you get to create your own map as you could in Etrian?

If this is a first person dungeon crawl version of Devil Survivor (which is possibly the best game I've played this year) I am so there. Even if it isn't, I'm...well, I'm still there, because SMT is involved. But considering the quality of DS, I'm excited beyond the capacity for rational thought.

Well uh, there will be the whole demon party member mechanic and a battle system with a focus on exploiting weaknesses, as per usual for MegaTen, but it's not going to have anything that Devil Survivor introduced to the series.

Damn, I haven't even finished all the endings in Devil Survivor or the Answer in P3:FES yet, and Atlus just throws yet another awesome looking game in our general direction. Damn you Atlus, stop kicking so much ass!

@Zeik56

Considerably longer than Devil Survivor? That's news to me. But anyway, it's not the story (I could view the rest of the endings I didn't git in the interwebs) but the exclusives (demons like Metatron, route-specific auto skills like on Naoya's route) that makes me "want" to play through the game again.

Of course, nobody pointed a gun at me to do just that, but this strange voice in my brain... *sniff*

Avid fan of SMT Persona 4 (meatily into the game), SMT Devil Survivor (completed twice ^o^), both Etrian Odysseys (trying to complete both lol XD), so yeah, SMT and Atlus fan, here I am, and yes I'm am (interested)!

I heard about this game when there was a japanese release and was rather disappointed when there were rumours that it wasn't going to be translated, but now that it's coming over, hell yeah!
