We've been patiently waiting for Atlus to announce the DS game Strange Journey. The next in the line of Shin Megami Tensei games looks...well, strange, and we dig that in Atlus games.
It just came out in Japan last month, so hats off to Atlus for working on this so quickly. For those that missed the earlier talk on the game, it's a sci-fi first-person role-playing game that has you exploring a hole that opened up in from the bottom of our planet. Inside? You guessed it: Weird-ass demons (over 300 now!) you can summon and use against others.
We're thrilled that the release date is set some time in the Spring of 2010. The word from Japan is that this game is awesome.
In our gallery below we have plenty of brand new English screenshots of the game.
SMT fans, where you at? Are you looking forward to this?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
1. Am I an SMT fan? Check
2. Do I love Atlus? Check
3. Am I interested in this? Double check.
First quarter next year is going to annihilate my wallet. So much good stuff.
There's also word from Atlus Japan that this -is- the official SMT4. Which is even more freaking awesome.
I really hope someone at Atlus is just an Adam Sandler fan or something.
BLAH BLAH BLAH MUST BUY.
BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI.
I think I need to retire from posting comments on Atlus releases. I never have anything clever or insightful to say, and 90% of the time when I hear news of a new SMT game in real life, my first reaction is to scream like a little girl.
I secretly hope though that I don't have to play through the whole thing 6 times to see it all. I don't have much time these days to pull of something like that.

Considering this is effectively a true mainline SMT game, and those are all about your choices that result in different endings, it's pretty much a guarantee you won't be able to see everything the first time through. Unfortunately(?) this is supposedly a much longer game than Devil Survivor too, so playing through it multiple times to see the different endings will require even more effort.
My thoughts exactly.
Yeah it does look a lot like it. Does anybody know if you get to create your own map as you could in Etrian?
Well uh, there will be the whole demon party member mechanic and a battle system with a focus on exploiting weaknesses, as per usual for MegaTen, but it's not going to have anything that Devil Survivor introduced to the series.
Considerably longer than Devil Survivor? That's news to me. But anyway, it's not the story (I could view the rest of the endings I didn't git in the interwebs) but the exclusives (demons like Metatron, route-specific auto skills like on Naoya's route) that makes me "want" to play through the game again.
Of course, nobody pointed a gun at me to do just that, but this strange voice in my brain... *sniff*
I heard about this game when there was a japanese release and was rather disappointed when there were rumours that it wasn't going to be translated, but now that it's coming over, hell yeah!
