Atkinson: Gamers don't need to impale people photo

Game hating Attorney General Michael Atkinson has continued to justify his personal censorship of Australia's videogame content by claiming that gamers don't "need" violent games. Addressing the recently banned Aliens Vs. Predator, the man solely responsible for Australia's lack of an adult rating system has determined that since violent games aren't necessary, their censorship is perfectly acceptable.

"This is a question of a small number of very zealous gamers trying to impose their will on society," said Atkinson of gamers, totally oblivious to the irony of his statement. "And I think harm society. It’s the public interest versus the small vested interest.

"I accept that 98%, 99% of gamers will tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but the 1% to 2% could go on to be motivated by these games to commit horrible acts of violence. You don’t need to be playing a game in which you impale, decapitate and dismember people."

I wonder if Atkinson would stand by his conviction if we banned other things on the basis of whether or not we "need" them. We don't need television, books, or even clothes. Perhaps we should ban football or cricket, since you don't need to watch or play sports games. Atkinson's logic is pathetic, and his statement about a small group imposing its will on society is the most blatantly hypocritical thing he could have said.

When he stops being the one man responsible for Australia's censorship, he can talk about imposing wills. What a ludicrous little man Michael Atkinson is.

I know I don't need it. I just want it. I'm not addicted. I can quit whenever I want!

On a serious note this guy just doesn't get the message. Didn't a real poll recently come out that said the majority of Aussies were for the 18+ rating? Why is this even a debate?

Australia sucks so hard.

Someone high up in Australia's government should deem Michael Atkinson un-needed.

Based solely on what I've read on this site, it sounds like a big chunk of the blame falls on the Australian media outlets for not crucifying the guy on this stuff. You'd figure news outlets would be questioning him pretty hard at every turn over any type of artistic/entertainment censorship. I'd assume that nearly the whole of Australia (at least the non-gaming whole) seems to be agreeing with guy.

I will continue to disparage Australian gamers for something out of their direct control until this discrepancy is rectified.

Don't more people get hurt/killed in sports related riots/fights than from video games? BAN SPORTS BECAUSE THEY INCITE VIOLENCE

So you'll let the 1-2% of people who are mentally unstable tell the majority that they cannot play something and yet you claim that its a small minority that wants to bring the games is but it likely much larger than 1-2%?

Hypocrisy much?

I mean it really once again says, its okay for movies to do this to people. But if a game does it its a big issue. I'd give up on humanity right now but I did that years ago...

Gamers sure don't need to impale people but I guess they DO need to shoot up an airport full of civilians.

It's obvious that Mr. Atkinson hasn't kept up with the times. Anyone with a single toe in the proverbial pool of popular culture will know how video gaming has become one of the most rapidly growing media phenomenons of our time. Gamers ARE society Mr. Atkinson, you should know that, you're representing them.

Quite frankly while xnumber of times he got beat up in schoolx person continues to defend the U.S. from Terrorizores. I will be sitting here impaling people to my greatest ability. I would like to see the defense attorney try and defend his entire stance on life with that one statement "if we don't need it it's not necessary". Got to love the contradictions of today's government defending us from ourselves and all who knows I may be in that mind blowing 1-2% statistic he made up for his point.

I doubt that the number of gamers that are "motivated to commit horrible acts of violence" is anywhere near 1-2%, let alone how many people actually act on these desires. Compared to the number of injuries and even deaths seen in other forms of entertainment such as some sports, the supposed violence caused by games is almost negligible.
It seems that placing that small number of people over the rest of the people in the country who want a R rating is not a very smart thing to do.

Let us list all the things that we do not NEED
I'll start with the ones we already got. And once the list is complete we should send it to this guy and tell him he can't have those because he doesn't NEED them.

-TV
-Books/Magazines etc
-Clothes
-Electricity
-Pets
-Music
-Paper
-Plastic
-Internet
-Microphones
-Telephones
-Automobiles
-Board Games
-Glasses
-Hearing Aids
-Pace Makers
-Guns
-Tobacco/othersmokingthings
-Alcohol
-E.D. Medication
-Puzzles
-Clocks/watches/etc
-Tables
-Vases
-Pictures
-Sports
-Airplanes
-Pens/Pencils/Crayons/etc

Tons more, someone else can add. We don't NEED any of these things but we use them to make our lives more pleasant or to make our tasks easier to accomplish.

You, Mr. Atkinson, need to be very careful about the bullshit you spout to gamers, because overall gamers are an intelligent bunch. You have to be smart to make games and you generally have to be at least approaching smart to play them.
