Atari buys Cryptic Studios, nabs an unannounced title photo

Cryptic Studios doesn't have to sleep alone anymore. Today Atari announced that it has acquired the MMO developer responsible for City of Heroes, Champions Online and the Star Trek MMO. Atari will be inheriting all of those titles, strengthening an already rock solid portfolio with a dash of MMO tastiness.

Champions Online is slated for a 2009 release on the Xbox 360 and PC. It is definitely one of the more anticipated MMOs on a console in recent memory for a reason – it appears to be good. The Star Trek MMO will be released sometime in 2010 and an unannounced (but probably MMO) title will hit shelves in 2011.

The acquisition comes in the form of big money – 26.7 million upfront – with bonus options available to Cryptic. According to gamesindustry.biz, Cryptic could earn up to 20 million dollars if their 2010-11 revenues reach a certain sales mark. The deal reads like an NFL contract. One can only hope that Cryptic won’t break its foot within the first three games like a certain Indianapolis Colts defensive end after his big payday.

O_o...is it just me or did Atari go from near complete failure to a somewhat profitable and ambitious business within the last 4 months?

Wait where did Atari get money from? Phil Harrison's personal funds?

I...wow...I did not see this coming.

First Ghostbusters...now this.

Great for Cryptic though. I support those guys 100% and Champions Online is one of the most anticipated games I really want to get my hands on.

What's next? Publishing Brutal Legend?

....it's a thought. heh.

As earlier comments have stated... where did Atari get the money?

Months ago, they were riding on hoping Alone in the Dark would get them out of near bankruptcy.

Now they purchased a incredibly good looking title, Ghostbusters, then picked up Cryptic, one of the better MMO producers in the market, without blinking a eye?

This economy is strange. :P

I had a feeling that Phil Harrison could turn the company around, and it looks like he's going to do just that. It'd be kinda cool for Atari to release another console, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Why, Cryptic, why?

Atari's once good name has gone to trash lately with shoddy, buggy games and the worst customer service I've ever encountered. I really hope they leave Cryptic alone to do their own thing and just shove money at them.

As long as they don't screw up City of Heroes. It's got a good vibe going right now. I want them to keep it going.
