AT&T announces data plans for the PS Vita photo

Just one day before the 2012 International Consumer Electrontics Show kicks off, and Sony has let loose a nice little piece of information for all of you eager PS Vita followers in the United States.

From the official PlayStation twitter account, AT&T has just announced that it will have data plans available for both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the PS Vita. Only two plans have been revealed so far: a $14.99 data plan for 250MB or a $24.99 data plan for 2GB. The interesting thing about these plans is that both will not require the customer to sign up to any contract with AT&T.

I'm sure that Sony and AT&T will be providing more information during CES about these new data plans, but being capped at only 250MB for $14.99 sounds like a rip off, unless you only plan to play LittleBigPlanet on the train ride to and from work. Still, with no contracts to be tied down to, this still sounds like a tempting offer, especially for those PS Vita gamers who looking for just the single player experience.

Damnit At&t you broke the wrong barrier, sure contracts are bad, but paying $25 for 2GB is worse!

This is the part of the Vita saga I'm most interested in watching while I wait for a price drop. AT&T's data service is pretty ass, especially considering AT&T's love for enormous dead zones in the US.

As it stands, those prices are pretty nutty, even by prepaid standards, we'll see how much of a problem that is once people get a whiff of AT&T's god awful service.

And to think at one point the only thing you paid for was the system and games for it.

Probably just a typo, or they mean the 3G+WiFi unit.

OR OR OR OR, you could just get a Wifi Vita and piggyback on any 4G phone's portable hotspot feature. Added bonus of not using AT&T's network. Even my T-Mobile data plan is 5GB for $30 bucks. You'd be ridiculously dumb to get this.

lol, what a rip. I wonder what will happen if most people buy the wifi-only model while the 3G models collect dust in some warehouse.

3G is useless on the Vita since I thought downloads are capped at 20mbs so it's only good for web browsing.

So I could pay Sprint 30.00/m for 4G Wifi tethering on my phone and get UNLIMITED data or I could pay ATT 25.00/m for 2G. Hmmm... this ones a toughy fellas, will need to get back to you guys when i figure it out.

I already use my phone as a portable hotspot quite regularly.

I just pre-ordered my WiFi only Vita, accessory pack and 16gb memory card (it was the biggest one shopto.net had for some reason)

£300 for the lot. Not bad.

I'll just grab my games from PSN. Fuck hard copies of games, I'm going all digital on my Vita if possible.

Knew it would be garbage. It would be easier to tether from your phone off your existing plan with any data carrier you choose than buy anything off this half-assed attempt by Sony.

Why would anyone ever want to get a data plan? Is it required?

I want the Wifi version. Do I need to pay to play online? I already have Xbox Live and really want a Vita but I won't get one if there is a monthly payment to use it.

Yay. More consumer fragmentation!

And it's no surprise online gaming is so cliquey!

If/when I get a Vita, it's going to be WiFi. I don't need data that badly. Sony can't deliver a web browser worth a shit to save their life, and whatever other online services that will be there, odds are, if I'm someplace playing the Vita, there won't be an opportunity to use the 3G service anyway. Like on a plane or a cruise ship. Or traveling outside of the country. Or any of the million plus dead zones on AT&T's network.

I really wish Sony would mention that the 3G capabilities are available for playing online multiplayer games. It seems most people are under the impression they are.

Unless they give me some kind of option to enroll this under my existing assrape data plan, I'm not interested. The first edition bundle is my Christmas gift, so hopefully I can just shut off the 3G altogether.

My thoughts exactly the moment i read it..

@ El Conrado

It actually doesnt seem like a typo, the whole sentence construct indicates that its hard to interpret any other way i.e. "..for BOTH the 3g and wifi versions"

Wait.. ive got it.. can see the headline now.. Sony unveils new Vita functionality at CES "PS Vita wifi-only version ALSO requires proprietory stand-alone data plan for any online connectivity". Ouch.

I struggle with a 10GB cap per week.
What (And how many) games that we know of are worth getting the 3G for anyways? After how many games that passed on Infrastructure that would have been phenomenal with it on the PSP, I have a lack of faith on a significant amount of games being worthwhile for online play.

Eh, all I can think of playing on the Vita is Persona 4. and Uncharted. So, no data plan sounds good to me.

"From the official PlayStation twitter account, AT&T has just announced that it will have data plans available for both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the PS Vita."

And if we have Wi-Fi from a much better company, I mean like through a router or hotspot? I do hope that was just a typo, Cause I'm not paying AT&T a dime if I don't have to- FOR ANYTHING. All of their services from front to back, from Customer Service to their internet, is complete shite that I will never, God willing, go back to.

My seething hate for the company goes so deep that If they somehow slipped in that you needed to deal with them to use Wi-Fi on the Vita it'd mean me never getting a Vita at all. And I'd jump to say I'd be fine with that despite my huge disappointment.

Either way, it was left up to AT&T to decide since they're the provider and we all pretty much knew it was going to be a shit amount of data for way too much money. We just didn't know the extent yet. People need to start blaming them, like they should, and quit jumping Sony's shit for anything more then being dumb enough to sign a contract with them.
