Assassin's Creed sucks on the PlayStation 3: At least that's what they say photo

IGN has a review up (warning: possible spoilers) of the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed which is interesting for two things -- its less-than praiseworthy summary (complete with good-yet-humble 7.5 review score) and the fact that it claims the PS3 version is severely nerfed when compared to the Xbox 360 version.

The problems seem mostly to be graphical, which is surely something that the "visually superior" PlayStation 3 doesn't really need. Here's what IGN had to say:

These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it's obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions.

Assassin's Creed started life as a PS3 exclusive, so this is somewhat ironic news to say the least. Ubisoft clearly believes it more worth the company's time to focus on the Xbox 360, which is hardly surprising considering that it's the platform where software is selling best. Still, bad news for those who only have a PS3, and I'm personally a little disappointed by IGN's final verdict on the game. Still, we'll have to wait and see for ourselves whether or not the Creed lives up to its hype.

No real surprise here. Not trying to sound fanboy-ish, because I'm definitely not. But every multi-platform title so far has looked and played the best on the 360. The only title that I can think of that actually looks better on PS3 is Oblivion, but that's only because they spent an extra year on the PS3 version.

I like how many people are going "oh well, good thing I read this review before I wasted my money." The flawless logic behind looking at one mans negative perspective and ignoring the positive ones of others is astounding. I haven't played this game so I'm not even going to begin the "omg Assassins Creed ruleZ" rant, all I'm saying is that every review (good or bad) should be taken with a grain of salt, and a pound of personal perspective.

Haha, thanks Jim. Colonel Alloy is a badass. Anyway, I was mostly referring to some of the other comments that were a lot more... negative. I too was expecting this game to be widely heralded by all as the next God or something, but a 7.7 is still fine in my book.

Let's not forget IGN review guidelines people....5 is average - 7.5 isn't bad at all. Sure the game got overhyped but eyebrows should have been raised when Jade started doing all the promo for it. They were trying to distract journalists and the rest of us nerds with boobs so we wouldn't take a close enough look at the game itself.

So...more bad news for the PS3. They're making it really hard for Sony fans to defend their purchase.

@ vishusdelishus
I think you mean 1UP guidelines, because until recently, IGN was one of the biggest perpetrators of the 6-10 scale.

What's the point of "Another Take"? I mean, nothing new is ever really brought up and the othe reviewer usually just agrees with most everything in the original review. Wouldn't it make more sense to post one that actually...you know...gives another take on the game?

So i'm cancelling my pre-order.

Well, I was going to wait to get this game anyway for reasons I won’t go into here (I’m planning on writing a short blog entry about it soon), and this just gives me further reason to do so. Hopefully, we’ll get a Destructoid Review (*hint, hint*) of the PS3 version...

Fuck, another microsoft robot post!

hey, drake's uncharted is great, so, i don't care about ass creed, i mean really a 7.7 vs a 7.5? the game is not that good. its good. not great. so i dont care. i tend to only play great games. and cod 4 is better on the ps3. Ratchet and clank rocks, uncharted is amazing, and i still love heavenly sword..

what i find is most of the cross platform titles suck.. people are not yet good at making multi threaded code. with efficient use of memory. microsoft and their crap apis have turned everyone into sloppy memory hogs.. i don't care about this game. so it doesnt matter to me..

Assassin's Creed is out already?

Well, I'll still probably get it when I get Mass Effect and a 360 as I was originally planning, along with Bioshock.

If this is true though, it sucks for Sony. They really need to catch a break once in a while. I'm betting it's just a shitty review though, like some others I've read in the past. I'm not going to read it due to the possible spoilers, however.

The IGN video review destroyed the game and made it sound like it was awful. The reviewer then called it "average" and it was given a 7.8. A 7.8 is average? If it had .2 more points then you'd have 50% less fanboys crying for the heads of the IGN reviewers. What the hell is the point of a 10-point system? Just give a review and say if it's great(80 or above) or shitty(70 to 0)

First off, Dtoid didn't say Assassin's Creed sucks on the PS3, IGN did.

Second, GameSpot sure did say framerate was better on the PS3 version but said it in passing. IGN went into details about which parts of the game had the worst framerate issues on the PS3. Just based on the amount of detail alone, I'm tending to lean more in favor of IGN's review (at least on this particular issue), especially considering that this is a trend that has been going on since the PS3 launched.

However, we'll know within a week who was right and who was wrong. It should be pretty obvious.

It's a tough call, really. On one hand, buying a multiplatform game will probably be better on the 360 when you factor in achievements, XBL, and the history of most other multiplatform games. On the other hand, buying the PS3 version means you are more likely to actually finish the game and not have your console break on you half way through.

What i find is that 360 owner constantly bash the ps3. big time inferiority complex. I like the ps3 cause it doesn't red ring, and it has the games i want to play on it. it is that simple for me.

i think the 360 is powerful, and has some good games on it. i just wont buy one until they make one that doesn't have a %40 failure rate. that is my gripe. and i'm not a troll at all. my opinion is legit. weather you like it or not.

@hexfix93: Sorry, but I judge you when you use poor grammar.

weather n. the state of the atmosphere with respect to heat or cold, wetness or dryness, calm or storm, clearness or cloudiness

whether conj. a function word, used usually with correlative or or with or whether, to indicate (1) until the early 19th century a direct question involving alternatives; (2) an indirect question involving stated or implied alternatives; (3) alternative conditions or possibilities

I repeat: moron. You make normal non-trolling PS3 owners like me look bad.

Hilary is an ass as he sins upon this blessed game! hallelujah! just foolin. I can't say I agree with his review. Considering all the positives reviews that take Hilary's negative comments and make them seem like after thoughts. For example many other critics talk about minor glitching, slight repetition, but it's tossed aside. The rest is praise. Where Hilary really focuses on those two factors and really goes for the throat. Eh, I wouldn't wouldn't worry too much about this review anyway. I'm sure Hilary doesn't speak for the entire IGN crew

Damn it! Where the hell is this game for the PC?! "The game's PC version will be coming in early 2008." Grrrrrr.....

Then again, considering what other games have come out or will be coming out this month for the PC and the Wii, I'll have little enough free time as it is. Maybe delaying the PC release until early next year isn't such a bad thing after all.

While I am not yet at the later levels, I have put several hours into the PS3 version and I am currently regarding these words from IGN as a steaming load. No framerate or texture problems of any sort.

I guess it sucks that they are somehow stuck with an inferior experience, but whatever. Their loss, not mine. Maybe my PS3 is just magic or something.

@hexfix93 - Really? I've been enjoying my 360 since launch without any hiccups... but lets talk about this "bashing" game, shall we?

Sony originally bashed Microsoft because they had Two- TWO SKU's for their system, OH THE HORROR! Now Sony is selling their PS3 in, what, four flavours? All with something missing thats in another version? Bullshit, at least with a Core Unit, the only thing that you can physically NOT get is the Chrome finish on your tray and eject button.

Sony also scoffed at Microsoft and their Software Emulation of Xbox Games. I don't even THINK I need to go into how much Sony is playing hypocrite with this statement.

To further throw salt onto this wound, I've had plenty of disgruntled PS3 owners come back with this being broken, or this not functioning correctly, Sony won't fix my PS3 because (and I quote this, mother fuckers) "My Ps3 has Dust in it, voiding the warranty". It took Sony something like 8-10 revisions of their PS2 hardware to remedy the laser issues, I've got very little hope that the current ps3's are very stable systems.

But about this news article, I say, good :) Teach Sony to make things developer friendly, because I have a very good idea that this is ultimately what it comes down to. They have the tools they want over with Microsoft, over at Sony they have Bullshit flavoured Lolipops covered in lies and bottle-necked hardware.

exactly where in the review on ign does the quote jim sterling attributed to them occur?

i had just read the reviews for assasins creed on ign- a four pager by hillary goldstein, at the end of that a paragraph sized additional review titled "another take" by jeff haynes (a format which is repeated for both the ps3 and the xbox360 sections for the us version of ign), and a two page australian 360 review by patrick kolan- earlier today so when i read what mr sterling quoted ign as having said i was confused. the quote provided didn't seem familiar so i went back and reread the reviews.

it turns out i wasn't crazy after all. the quotation provided, the quotation that jim sterling attributes to ign that "claims the PS3 version is severely nerfed when compared to the Xbox 360 version" doesn't appear in any of the reviews. what's up with that?

i suspect, mr sterling, that the feeling you're confusing with irony over the graphical prowess of the ps3 is in fact constipation brought on by blowing one too many made up quotes out of your ass.

ll, most people who play games hardcore like i do, have problems with their 360s, and not one of my ps3 friends have ever had an issue with their ps3s.

the net glorifies failures sure, but what i speak of is first hand, i know 4 people who have had to get their 360s fixed, and i know of 6 people who have great ps3s that never break.

so i don't care what you say. my words come from my experience, not what i read on the internet you clown..

and like i said, microsoft released a broken design. that should not be rewarded by my dollars. not to mention i hate their operating systems across the board..

Sony's machine is not perfect, BUT IT WORKS. and the games are great on it, and its blue ray, and wifi and only 50 bucks more than a 360 with an hard drive no wifi and no hddvd.

I like the ps3 more. i like the controller more. I like the exclusives more. I like not paying for internet gaming too. I don't care about xbox live.

Look, the 360 is great for those who like it, for the games they have. fine. its a powerful system, that lacks key features that i wanted out of my next gen console that the ps3 did give me.

I like metal gear, i like ratchet and clank, i like warhawk,i want unreal 2k7, i want final fantasy 13, i want blue ray, i want kill zone and little big planet.

on the 360 all i want is gears of war, bioshock, and mass effect. But no way, not utnil they make a console that will not break on me.. no way.
