Assassin's Creed is worth ten million dollars? photo

According to gamesindustry.biz, Ubisoft is suing PC games manufacturer Optical Experts Manufacturing for over ten million dollars. The claim is that an employee took an early version of Assassin’s Creed home and uploaded it onto the Internet causing over 700,000 people to pirate and mutually dislike the PC version of the game. Furthermore, Ubisoft is claiming that a fatal bug put into the game on purpose was a part of the production and pirated content of Creed, thereby lowering review scores and customer satisfaction.

The “bug” was a piece of malicious code that could crash the game halfway through. Ubisoft did not comment if the bug they put into the game additionally caused every mission to be the same or every civilian to have the same comment to Altair’s acrobatics. It has also not been confirmed if the push-happy retards scattered throughout the back end of the game was a result of the malicious code either.

On a personal level, I think suing for a leak of the game is perfectly fine. Although, adding in the “irreparable harm” due to the game’s bug seems to be overboard. I would have been more than accepting if my copy of Assassin’s Creed stopped working. It would have saved me from several hours of jumping into haystacks and other repetitive elements. The reason the game got poor marks was because it wasn’t that great of a game, Ubisoft.

I rather liked the jumping into haystacks.

On the one hand, I want to commend Assassin's Creed for making me uncover information about my target before killing them. On the other, I want to stab everyone in the eyes for making me do exactly the same things every single time.

And don't even get me started on flag collecting.

Putting aside the issues with the game... and the fact that it was very demanding on hardware according to reviews... and that it was released months after the console version... who in their right mind creates game breaking faults and puts them into pre-release versions intentionally? Anyone with half a brain can see that it'll get downloaded and reported all over the place.

I hate Assassin's Creed. So very much.

I hate Ubisoft too. Mostly because they made Assassin's Creed.

So the problem wasn't that it was a shoddy PC part that needed way more hardware than it should have and it was buggy as hell and boring and repetitive to boot?

I'm fucking sick of everyone complaining that piracy is the reason they didn't make millions of dollars from their game. Your games suck, for the most part. When installing the game becomes a problem due to DRM, don't be surprised if people don't buy the next one.

Quality products without hassle = sales.

Everything else = PIRATES DID IT THEY STOLE OUR BABIES THEY WANT US DEAD OMFG!! PC GAMING IS DEAD.

Just...no.

Am I the only one who liked assassins creed? Well not the multiple loading screens, but the game felt solid.

I liked climbing buildings and searching for people to save. It made me feel like batman for some reason.

Assassins' Creed is not worth 15 quid, never mind 10 million dollars.

I don't mind if a game is repetitive if it's Good. That's why I buy FF's when they come out, they're basically all the same, but they're (mostly) all good. Thats why I'm going to buy Disgaea 3, because it's good. The gameplay remains practically the same.

Also, where were the production values? No subtitles? That's laziness, and I live in a busy house, I can't always hear every single thing said in a game, which is why I have subs on to catch what I have missed, they're a god send and should be mandatory. A game like Assassins Creed was meant to be on a grand scale and have great presentation as Jade "Female" Raymond told us countless times. Kingdom Hearts 2 has more presentation value in a single world than Assassin's Creed has in the entire game. I can remember in Kingdom Hearts 2 where the the HUD changed when you entered the white room in the old mansion, that was the only room in the game where the HUD changed to that. Thats production value, it shows effort has gone into the game. Assassins' Creed is just ... meh.

@CrudeDarkness - In all fariness, I really wanted to like Assassin's Creed. I loved the idea of traveling between the three cities, scaling buildings, and assassinating some medieval dudes. The problems were everything in between. If you can ignore that stuff, then awesome! I couldn't.

Ah, so that's why I have to screw around for an hour before an actual assassination in an assassin game, have the town half filled with people who's only purpose seems to be to piss me off, and have to exit 4 times to get out of the game, I must have a copy with the intentional fatal bug that takes out the fun. Very clever Ubisoft.

that's just how lawsuit's work. you have to throw every potential cause of action and remedy against the wall and see what sticks. If you don't you could lose your chance to recover under those theories should then become more viable.

Titans Quest had a similar "copy protection" mech in it - after exiting various areas (the first dungeon being one) it put a coded call to the memory or CD drive and if it detected it wasn't legit, just bombed... No warnings, no messages,nothing...

That got it slammed in the initials previews but unlike Assassins Creed, was a really good game to play through. Still haven't completed either but hey ho, oh, and Creed definately a console game, cant even imagine how it would play on PC, well, apart from badly... :)

@CrudeDarkness: I loved it, 2 of the 3 other gamers I work with loved it. It's a love it or hate it game... I wish Destructoid would peg it as such instead of just outright saying it sucks all the time.

apparently ubisoft didn't get the memo that only about 1,000 of those 700,000 would actually buy the game if the pirated game wasn't available. I have a hardcore pirate friend, and he refuses to buy dvds. he literally goes to the walmart dvd section to pick out his "downloads of the week"

The first time I read this I got the title waaay wrong. I read that it was worth ten dollars. I would pick it up at that. It was repetative, but I really enjoyed it. The ending, I think, added so much to the game (if you know aztec/mayan/chinese mythology, etc, etc)

I actually really liked the game, and I thought it was a great start. I may be wrong about this, but I feel that people always complain that there's nothing new or original to play, and when an original game comes out, and has some flaws, people forget that it often is largely because the game is not a 3rd generation sequel that has had the time to work out the gameplay kinks.
I really liked Assassin's Creed for giving me some new things, and I look forward to seeing the ideas behind it get expanded and refined.

Who the hell buys PC games that were console games these days? Fucking no one. The loss of cash is on them regardless.

Ubisoft can sue if they have substantial evidence this company let their game out, but there's no other reason. It's their job to bug-fix, not Optical Experts. If you look up OS, it's a company that gets your product out and who reproduces it.

The dropping a hundred feet into a haystack was pretty stupid I thought, to me its on the same level as Indiana Jones escape-nuclear-blast-inside-fridge move.

But other than that the game wasnt so bad, other the the fact that I couldnt find 1 last Kingdom flag and didnt feel like going through all that again.

I did not buy the PC version of ASS creed because I bought Devil May Cry 4 on the PC instead.....LAWL

I avoided both if those games for every system, even cell phones as I found them both pretty lack luster.

Maybe next time they'll release it alongside the console versions? Probably wouldn't help the piracy issue but it would most likely sell more copies on the PC when people are still actually aware of the game, not six months later when no one cares anymore/played it on a console.

Assassins Creed had all sorts of problems on the PC. The first batches of Assassins Creed that hit Australian shores all had their manuals cut short and had the discs literally cut across the middle of them. So in the end, the manuals were an inch less in width and the discs were not playable.

Nice work Ubisoft Sweat Shops!
