Assassin's Creed 3 may take us to World War II photo

You know what we don't have enough of? World War II games! But wait, don't hang up just yet. Far from talking about making yet another generic Nazi-shooter, Ubisoft has apparently been discussing where to take the Assassin's Creed series next. After stating that the next game could star a female killer, producer Sebastian Puel mentioned what kind of time period a woman should appear in.

"We've had discussions on that very topic," he states, talking about a female assassin. "It could be really interesting but we'd need to find the right time period and place for that.

"Where would that make sense? We don't want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero as the first inspiration is always the time period, but if you're talking about, say, World War II the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting."

Puel also talked about how easy the series is to expand: "I'm often asked if we're doing a third game after ACII ... I mean, we could do thirty-five of these."

Knowing Ubisoft, I wouldn't be surprised if they did release thirty-five of them ... for starters. As for a female WWII assassin, I hope they learn from the mistakes of others first.

I was expecting feudal Japan, honestly. The ninja connotations are simply too easy to make for marketing executives.

I don't know about this...I would have thought that by the third game, you would be playing in the present, as Desmond, who's fully powered up due to recovered memories of his assassin heritage. So it'd be kind of like where Thief 4 was going.

Oh, my, World War II. How original. I'm all a twitter. Couldn't they go to Greece or Rome or Japan or the FSCKING MOON instead?!

Can't we have one with take place in like, Persia, with all this Aladdin-like scenery and all that jazz?

Oh wait, they already made that game. I loved it. It was called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

But seriously, on topic I don't really care where the series goes, as I'm just hoping that the second game is actually as good as they say it will be, unlike the first one.

Not sure if I'd want a WWII setting, the FPS genre has already murdered that one way too many times for me.

@Solidus187 I agree that the FPS genre has, but what I feel developers need to do if they want to stay in that era is start exploring alternate realities.

Turning Point was an AWFUL game, but a GREAT, and FRESH concept. I don't see how assassins creed would work in a WWII setting, but could you imagine assassinating hitler?

Dude with AC they could seriously take the game into all kinds of great unexplored eras. Why WWII...again?

A female assassin would be cool. I'm always for more interesting female heroes.

Well lets see, Assassins Creed 3 would come out at the earliest in 2012. So by then the amount of WW2 games should hit the 1,000,000 mark. Plus there are already 2 stalth, assassination WW2 game out or about to come out (Velvet Assassin and The Sabatour).

God I hope not. There are so many interesting time periods that haven’t been done to death. What about Victorian England or the start of the industrial revolution.

Wouldn’t mind a female assassin but you know half the missions would revolve around seducing men then killing them.

You know what would be amazing, if it took place in ancient Rome. Although, you wouldn't have massive structures to jump off. What would also be kool if it was in the not-to-distant future. No space marines, something similar to Mirrors edge really. I think that would be kool too.

I was always intrigued by the rumor that the second game was going to take place during the French Revolution. I'd rather see that. The setting would lend itself well to political shenanigans and Paris would be a great setting.

y'know, even WWI would be a more original concept compared to WWII...

but really, how about doing what AC1 implied was gonna happen and have the game take place in the present timeline...

Velvet Assassin was a pretty decent game, sure it had major flaws, but the story was excellent and Violette was a great heroine. If the gameplay was better, the greatness of VelVet Assasin would have shown better. VA probably had the best narrative for a WWII game, and broke many of its cliches.

I think AC3 should take place during the French Revolution.
MasterGlitch's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/13/2009 21:44

@Monte: Obviously the entire game isn't going to take place in the past. Just like in AC1, I'm sure a good chunk of gameplay will happen in the present, probably more and more as Desmond gains his assassin abilities.

Also, why do people ask Puel if there's going to be a third Assassin's Creed? Wasn't it announced as a trilogy to begin with? Those people must have really bad memory.

If they follow the proper pattern:

First one in medieval times

Second one during the Rennaissance

So Assassin's Creed the 3rd will be set in Georgian England/Napoleonic Wars

And Assassin's Creed Goes Forth will be set in a trench in WWI

After that they'll talk about doing a 5th one but won't be able to get the cast together.

Someone else that liked Velvet Assassin!

It was a little rough around the edges on some technical issues, but the core gameplay wasn't really any different than the first Splinter Cell. Most stealth fans thought that was awesome, so I never got what the problem with VA was.

Hmmm...yeah, I'd really prefer they do something original. Or at least more original than this. It could still be good, and it obviously wouldn't be a first person shooter...hopefully...but goddamn this conflict is played out.

How about during the French Revolution? It sounds weird, but that would be some new territory, and they could probably make it work. Yeah, I think I'd like to infiltrate a crowded public beheading. I think I'd like that a lot. You'd be taking out members of the Committee of Public Safety or something like that. I don't know, I'm brain storming.

I'd like to see some badass Han Dynasty episode where we can take the protagonist on a horse and knock over warriors with giant halberds and maneuver through millions of flaming arrows blocking out the sun. Some kind of Dynasty Warriors, but mixed in with a REAL story and more stealth + action gameplay. I dunno...

How about Ancient Egypt, the Dark Ages, the American Civil War, or the American Revolution? French Revolution, even? Feudal Japan is cool too, but that wouldn't make any sense for why the ancestry goes back to Japan.

The American Revolution, the French Revolution, or the beginning of Soviet Russia would make much better candidates than yet another WWII game.

I want what they promised at the end of AC1. Desmond going crazy killer hero in the near future. Can you imagine if they came through on the promises made. A bunch of armageddon type stuff going on around you, the templars manhunting your butt with current gen firepower. Versus you, some guy they kidnapped, now turned hardcore assassin. It'd be epic.

UBISOFT are probably just testing the water with this comment, to gauge people reactions. They did listen to the critisms from the first game and have ditched all the repetetiveness, or so they say. It's obvious that the reaction from this is going to be a resounding 'NO', 'NOT ANTOHER WWII GAME, KTHNX'. So listen to people UBISOFT, we have spoken.

If you have a game which is focused on third person action, stealth and sword play then please visit time periods where swords are still used. WW2 is a perfectly fine place for a game and that game is already beeing made (saboteur). And has already been made a hundred times.

I'm only for it if you play as a Nazi assassin. If it's an American, British, French, or even a Russian assassin, then no. Just no. Not enough Nazi protagonists. Why not set it during WWI? If they set it during WWI, everyone would be giving it praise for being original because not many games outside flight simulators are set during WWI. I mean WWI was an important war too! Where's the love for WWI?

WWII would definitely work, especially when we're talking about third-person view and a woman protagonist. The very first comment mentioned Feudal Japan. So why not take a bit from these two concepts and make it on after-WWII Japan? That would be good, I think.

I entirely agree Oncomouse,

Assassin's creed during the french revolution in Paris could be tons of fun. I'm not against a central/north Europe focus, but I'm so tired of playing fictions in the World War II era, it might be enough to turn me away. An American Revolution setting could be cool too. Just, not World War II please.

you know what all your problems are... your not thinking dark enough so far we've had an semi gloomy time period then we had the exuberant renaissance... we need to take it up a notch and go back to the Spanish Inquisition. It's really dark and easily linkable to the Templars... i do strongly agree that anything is better than WWII and that the French revolution is a fresh and creative idea I just feel it needs to be darker. As it goes for feudal Japan I think it's not that original and we need something unexpected and a time period that has never been used before for example: the 3rd crusades, the renaissance, Spanish Inquisition, the French revolution, Napoleonic wars, The Trojan war (ancient Greece), or the converting of the Scandinavian pagan's (Viking or Norse time.) The basic fact that Assassin's creed 3 need's to avoid is using automatic fire arms or any extent of a gun (wasn't to fond of it in the 2nd one) lastly the assassin's creed franchise shouldn't be limited to the amount of installments it has. If they can keep a new and fresh story line each game I'll buy all of them. Why must it only be a trilogy? Spanish Inquisition all the way!
