Assassin's Creed 2 undaunted by Modern Warfare 2 photo

Most videogames have wisely given Modern Warfare 2 a wide berth, to the point where I think a few of these 2010 delays have been decided specifically to avoid Activision's all-dominating shooter and the chart-raping success it will surely have. Ubisoft, however, has thrown caution to the wind and will not be moved, claiming it fears nothing from Infinity Ward's Call of Duty sequel.

"The first game we released two weeks after Modern Warfare, and we still sold 9 million copies," boasts creative director Patrice Desilets. "People, when they want their first-person shooter fix, they buy Modern Warfare. If you want you a swords, running on rooftops, big open city fix, this is it. And there are people that want to play that, and they don’t want to play the game with guns."

Desilets also believes that Assassin's Creed 2 has the same appeal as the original, but with all the frustration removed. Still, hats off to Ubisoft for sticking to its guns and daring to release at the same time as evil Activision's latest big sequel. Will that do AC2 harm, or will the game be just fine? What do you think?

My prediction is that AC II will cater to the exact same crowd as AC I, and thus have a polarized effect on reviewers.

Honestly, it looks very similar (two blades is better than one! Amirite?!).

That said, I loved AC I, so I'll buy it day one. To all the AC haters out there: try the PC version. It eliminates a lot of the repetitive nature of the game by adding four missions.

I didn't buy the first one, but I played it and really enjoyed the movement and combat. That being said, I think that I'm going to buy this one, and I'm not buying MW2 so yeah I think it'll be fine.

I am buying Assasins Creed 2 (aka Ass cream)

I am not buying Modern Warfare 2 - Activision can suck my dick.

Great. Two games I couldn't care less about. Dammit my holiday season is turning into a drought.

Guess it's Beatles: Rock Band and DLC for me. Good thing my birthday is late January.

I'm probably going to check out both, I liked each of their predecessors. I'd wait for a sale to buy either of them, though.

Not being a big Modern Warfare fan, I was never really excited for the sequel, but I am a huge Assassin's Creed fan and can't wait to get my hands on the second one. And kudos to Ubisoft for standing its ground and not letting Activision think it can hog the whole video game spotlight.

I'll get Assassins Creed 2 at some point but not at launch. And not because I will be playing MW2 and Dragon Age: Origins, but rather because I was kind of lukewarm towards the first title, and while the second one looks really interesting, for me, it is just not a day one purchase. That said, I dont think they have anything to fear from MW2 realistically. people will buy both during the holiday season.

Assassin's Creed has nothing to fear from CoD6: They appeal to two differetn demographics!

One appeals to the Casual Counterstrike Rejects, the other appeals to people who watch Time Team.

Speaking of the first Assassin's Creed, it still surprises me that the first one sold as much as it did. I mean, I saw a few commercials on Spike, but it's not like I was bombarded with ads as if it were GTA. It also didn't seem like the kind of game that would interest as many people that it did. And maybe it is just me, but I didn't hear any word-of-mouth rumblings like I did for games like Modern Warfare .

I don't get where publishers got this weird idea that people will only buy one game for Christmas or whatever. There is plenty of room for your game in this release window as long as it isn't another generic shooter. Ubisoft will probably be vindicated in sticking to their planned release.

More excited for AC2 than MW2 myself. And being British, I know which one I won't be getting at launch!

Ubisoft needs to also consider that MW2 has got MUCH more hype surrounding it than MW1. Hell, I don't like CoD at all, and MW surprised the shit out of me. I'll still be playing both, though.

Huge fan of anything Call of Duty... will buy.

Not so much a fan of Assassin's Creed, I felt burnt by the first one. All the sudden the game just ENDS and you are left with one of the worst endings they could have possibly came up with.

If you were smart, you'd not buy MW2. I applaud all the individuals who are refusing to buy the game, or are planning on buying it used. You gentleman and ladies are people who actually have conviction (or just don't like shooters, but either way, gg). Keep it up and swell our ranks.

Activision please close down.

COD4 will of course be huge, but with so many games now pushed to next year, I think Assassin's Creed will have plenty of room to stretch it's legs.

I'm having a hard time seeing why Modern Warfare 2 is scaring the pants off of every developer in the world. I mean, yes, its going to be a big game, but do they really think people are only going to buy one game this holiday season? To tell the truth, not being a CoD fan searching out info, I haven't heard anything about it.

I never played the first one, but heard a lot of good things about it. But as The White Light said, so many games have been pushed back that any big name games coming out will only have increased sales (This includes AC2). Way to go Ubisoft, I was unaware that they had the cojones to do this.

I liked that first AC for whatever misguided reasons. There is a divide between the two games. Third person v. first, shooter v. platform, single player v. multi. They cater to very different people.

I think the numbers are a little suspect on this... I think that people will buy both, and if they are like me, they'll buy the pre-order a little at a time (which I recommend buying a used game, beating it in 7 days, getting full refund at gamestop and putting it towards your pre-order)

The only reason I haven't pre-ordered ACII is because I'm still paying for my L4D2 pre-order... so lets wait till it gets closer to november to see what's really going on

The only reason I won't be buying AC2 at launch is because of how disappointed I was with the first game. I still can't force myself to play it any more than I already have. I'm about halfway through and thinking about doing more of the exact same missions for several more hours just isn't something I can get excited about.

i love assassin games period. 47 is epic, but seeming i wont be reaquinting with him too soon, Ezio will suffice. And unlike activision i wont be paying stupid inflated prices.... I'll let my mate do that seeming hes the one who suffers from FPS Syndrome. Me I'm too busy stabbing people and walking away like a ghost lost in the crowd :).

The original AC will probably do more harm on AC 2's sales than MW2 for their first few weeks. Until someone can prove it won't be as much of a disappointment.

Sorry but I'm not buying ass' creeds 2 I didnt like the first one and I sure the heck dont like this one. I'm a run gun hide shoot kind of guy. A one bullet between the eyes master of disaster. Never shoot a person in the back kind of guy. But I see lots of people going up behind someone and sticking a blade into someone yeah that takes lots of skills and is the most dishonest way to kill a man or woman. So no AC2 for me.

As fr as activision's price gouging you should lok into Gamestop with their billion dollars revenue from used games. Think about it a used game less than a month old and your paying $5.00 less I should be $10 to $15 less and what do we get for trade ins of new games 10.00 at the most. So your Activision boycott is worthless

I liked Assassins Creed for an hour. It had a lot of fun elements but they were too segregated, and you never really felt like an assassin at all. Just a guy in a white cloak who is good at climbing despite having 1 less finger.

If AC2 has more weapons/equipment, and actually lets you feel like an assassin, then I'm in. If it's just "sneak-sneak-kill target-run-hide" every single fucking time again, then no thank you.

No Modern Warfare 2 for me. I'll try to show that they just can't dictate price hike. Bob Kotick got $15m last year. What's the need for a price increase? US next? You can keep your games Activision.

Guys, fucking help me out here. I loved Assassins Creed and I was a big fan of CoD 1. But after CoD 2 and 3 game out I wouldn't wipe my ass with that shit. But Modern Warfare seemed to take console FPS's to a new level with single and multiplayer. I have money for two games. Uncharted 2 is definitely coming along, but Assassins Creed II or Modern Warfare 2? The loser gets picked up at Christmas but which one should I get at launch? (I worship the Assassins Creed II single-player but the lack of Online play kind of kills my excitement. FPS's don't turn me on but I'll make a exception for Modern Warfare because of the Multiplayer) Just. Help me.

I eventually made the paramount decision of which one of these games to get. After realizing how friggin' awesome AC2 is, I felt ashamed for even THINKING about getting MW2. Sure, some missions are a bit dull, and maybe the first one was a complete bag of shit, but it is the closest perfect game I've played in my life(albeit a short one). So trust me on this one, and I guarantee you'll be happier than those people who worship CoD and are also social and mental rejects :).
