Assassin's Creed 2 comes with a crazy thing named 'Uplay' photo

In case you've been too busy clambering all over Italy and lounging around your villa in Assassin's Creed 2 to notice, there's a little internet-online-tube-thing-service called "Uplay" lurking about. Hey, what's that thing for?

Well, it's Ubisoft's latest attempt at providing a unified services platform for the games they make. Yes, another platform, separate from the PlayStation Network or Xbox LIVE, that they will give you content through. Stuff like this on the PC, I can understand since no one technically "owns" that platform (try as they might), but on the consoles? We'll see, I suppose. Also, depending on how you pronounce "Ubisoft," the service's name might sound funny.

Why should you care about this still-in-beta product? Well, the service can net you some neat in-game goodness to reward your in-game deeds. You can gather up "Upoints" to trade in for free DLC unlocks. In Assassin's Creed 2's case, you can grab five extra throwing knife slots, a costume to make Ezio look like Altair (in case you hate half-cloaks), and a trip to the Auditore family tomb. Why desecrate your glorious heritage? Why not?! There's money in it!

Oh, you can also get a PC wallpaper (haha, but no) an Xbox 360 Dashboard Theme (eh..) and a PS3 Premium Theme (not Demon's Souls, not interested). In case you don't like any of the above, you can save your points to spend on Splinter Cell: Conviction once it's out. Maybe Sam Fisher will get an Ezio costume. Classy!

And there you go. Just a little tidbit to get you (read: me) salivating while waiting for the game to come in the mail.

Five extra throwing knives! Five!

This isn't new. I mean maybe they went through a rebranding but this has been in Ubi games for a while. Just had a different name....right? Wasn't this in Prince of Persia? You'd connect it to your Ubisoft.com account?

If nothing else, I can use this as proof that it's pronounced "Yoo-Bee-soft", rather than "Oo-Bee-soft".

So I bought beyond good and evil on Steam, now what?

Agreed with Xzyliac, I could have sworn I'd already signed up to a similar service with PoP.

"Stuff like this on the PC, I can understand since no one technically "owns" that platform"

I thought PC lemmings had decided on Steam as "owning" the PC platform.

We "lemmings", as you so douchily put it, have decided that Steam is good, not that it owns the platform. We like our choices thank you. Personally, beyond the much better patching capabilities of Steam, I like to use Xfire a lot more for things like friends and VoIP. However, like most Ubi ventures on the PC (read: all the shitty ports they've done), I predict this to be horrible and fail miserably.

Eh, this isn't going to do anything.

@phantomile
Not necessarily...

So, I'm (as usual) a little confused. Are we using Microsoft points to by Upoints?

No, you get points based off stuff you do in-game, a la trophies/achievements. Then, you can redeem them for other in-game stuff.

I like that you can get the themes for free as it's be that you need to pay for them anyway.

I saw the U thing like 4 or 5 times already. After the 4th I finally decided to figure out what the hell it was, then realized I had to make an account or something, then stopped caring. I'm assuming I missed out on those Yew Points since my account wasn't set up.

It is pronounced You-Bee-soft, as the founders based it off of the word ubiquitous - they wanted their products to be everywhere, in all markets.

I think this is an awesome addition!

The 360 theme isn't bad, but it's not quite a premium theme with friends-list graphics. The PS3 premium theme is probably a lot cooler. I'm tempted to rent the game just to hook it up to the PS3, play enough to get the points for the theme, then return it.

You can see the Splinter Cell awards already, too. They're listed on the uplay website. A background, weapon, multiplayer costume, and multiplayer mode.

Yes, we need more of these things. Steam and GFWL are most certainly not enough.

@RenagadePanda: No, you just need an account if you want to trade stuff.
