Art Attack Friday: Jon Sommariva photo

The pumped up work of Jon Sommariva graces the front page for this week's Art Attack Friday. A straight-forward comic artist at heart, Sommariva (aka *Red-J on DeviantArt) conveys his characters in the guise of wide-eyed, rough-cut, ready to rumble cartoons. With solid lines and action packed poses, his talent and creativity manages to translate any game character into its bad ass comic book equivalent.

One of the neater aspects of Sommariva's gallery on DeviantArt are the preparatory sketches of his work paired alongside the finalized colored renditions, revealing to the viewer the drastic difference between well conveyed linework and a finished piece. While it appears as though he takes quite a few commissions in his body of work, it's a pleasure to know that he continues to express his personal gaming enthusiasm with his talent as there are plenty of folk around these parts who certainly appreciate it.

Nice art but why do all the characters have the same faces?

While I appreciate the artwork aesthetically, the female faces are just wonk. The chibi-robo stuff is definitely a strong point, I loved that stuff. The Hoomons need work.

Yup thought i recognised his work, the guy did GO BOY 7 for DARK HORSE comics, his style is VERY strong (as in you can see it in everything he draws) but i will admit in these pics he shows more scope than i thought possibe. Some of his stuff looks like it may even take reference from Joe MAD and well i love this stuff. He def has the ability to do japanese-robot-manga-bigeyed-fun stuff , which is why the titel pic is awesome.

thanks for shareing! glad to see moe of his stuff.

I'm not feeling this guy's style at all. It's clunky and awkward. The poses are unnatural in some of them, the facial expressions look like he's trying too hard to make them look "edgy" (like the awful drawings on band t-shirts), Ganondorf looks like a troll doll...

The one with Batman, MegaMan, Wolverine, Hellboy, and that green guy is good. The Solid Snake and Barret ones are alright. But I don't like the others, really.

Yeah, I'm a the Maxx fan also.
I remember back when it was on MTV's Oddities along with Aeon Flux, and the Head. I only about a year ago got into the comic book.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one who noticed a similarity to Joe Mad's work. Some of his stuff also looks like Jeff Matsuda's style too. This dude is a great artist, but his work definitely sports a copy-cat vibe.

Not that it's a bad thing. My shit is constantly compared to other people's work, and I'm not even that great an artist. This dude has talent that I could only dream of.
