Considering our core base is mostly here in North America, today's announcement that the mech title Armored Core 4 will be available for PlayStation 3 owners in Europe on April 27 may fall on a few deaf ears. But hey, any non-negative news on the PS3 is always good, right? Right? Heheh, right guys? Here's the info:

Publisher 505 Games is pleased to today announce the April 27th release of Armored Core 4 on PlayStation 3. Armored Core 4 is the latest title in the historic mech-battling action and simulation saga, and is the first ‘next-generation’ incarnation of the internationally beloved franchise. This dazzling brand new chapter offers the ultimate in fast-paced, high octane mech simulation.

Armored Core 4 exploits the awesome power of PlayStation 3 to deliver astounding visuals and eye-watering special effects, including dynamic lighting and shadows, swirling water and mysterious fog. Mech designs benefit from massively more detailed 3D models and the arenas and environments now offer a giant leap in interactivity and detail. Players can use these interactive features to their advantage, for instance by smashing open arena walls to let in the light and search for enemies, or by hiding in water to ambush rivals.

Acording to SEGA, the U.S. 360 and PS3 versions come out in March. Full press release after the jump.

Those mech sims never stack up. You have to be a big fan of that genre to jump on this without renting it first

They can't get much worse than Gundam for the PS3!

Yes, I do care. I own Chromehounds for the Xbox 360, and as long as Armored Core 4 is at least as good, I'll probably add it to my collection. More likely the Xbox 360 version however, I see no reason to own a PlayStation 3 right now.

Wasn't there about eight editions of this game on the PS2 alone?

This new Armored Core is NOTHING like the old ones. You basically have all the OP/i parts or Human Pluses (incredibly powerful generator for near-unlimited flight time, can fire back weapons, awesome targeting, improoveed radiator). They kinda realized the AC series was a niche market, and Sony probably put it to them hard to make a good game to help the PS3 (even though it is still tentatively coming to 360). This game will sell HUGE in Japan, and might even do well in America, because it is incredibly fast and shiney....only if they've worked out the console-crashing bugs and framerate drop from TGS06.

Yeah, I loved Armored Core back in the day, but they REALLY need to create something new with this damn game. I don't want the same rehashed shit.

what is a giant mech game though besides better graphics, and awesome weapons?
seeing giant robots getting destroyed via some kind of havok engine would be teh sweetness
plus online play... no other AC title got online play... that I know of, please correct me on this one if need be.
im looking forward to it.. I've been a fan since I played AC2 for the ps2 back in the day... it feels kinda lonely, and quiet, but i suppose thats how it feels to be inside a huge mech... lenely, cut off from people, seeing your enemies through hardened plastic.

In the end I think this outing of Armored Core has the most potential to be awesome because of the platform it's on. I honestly don't think that the Playstation and Playstation 2 really had the power to realize the vision of Armored Core. The series really differentiates itself from a lot of other mech simulation games on speed when combined with the realism of simulation. In previous AC games the systems just didn't have the power to portray both the speed of the mechs while handling the multitudes of instances of in-game objects. A great example of this is the Pod Missle Launcher in Armored Core 2. Every time you shot the thing the game literally slowed down to about five FPS, especially if you were playing multiplayer. Now, to be fair, the Pod Missle Launcher broke up into 40 missles, so it was pretty spectacular. But when you've got two mechs flying around in mid-air, firing laser blast, with anti-missle defenses up, maybe a few missles already in the air, and you dumped that sort of havoc on to the system it all but froze up. Armored Core has always been about having a lot of things coming at you at once, and has always emphasized speed and efficiency. I can't even imagine how cool online multiplayer battles would be when the entire gameplay isn't hampered by a system that can't handle the concept.

It goes to show that the hardware that was packed into the PS3, and to a somewhat lesser extent the 360, is more than just something that will make games look pretty. Hardware in and of itself can lead to innovation. I haven't gotten to demo AC4 yet, unfortunately, but I'm really curious about some other aspects of the game, such as dynamic and destructable environments and the like, but I would imagine that if they're not in this installment they will be in the next. While the design decisions made on the Wii are admirable, and they really have done revolutionary things with the controller, I think people are far too quick to write off the innovation that can be had with a hardware upgrade. I don't think that AC4 would work on the Wii, controller problems aside. I don't think the series really worked as it should have on the PS2, either, for that matter, and that's the main reason I'm really excited for its release on the Playstation 3.
