Arkham Asylum will get experience-fueled gadgets photo

Most good action games these days come with light RPG elements to try and trick you into thinking the title is deeper than it actually is, and the hotly anticipated Batman: Arkham Asylum is no different. In a recent interview, developer Rocksteady has shed a little light on the Dark Knight's experience-based upgrades.

"As in a role-playing game, Batman will possess an experience system whereby it is possible to open up for new abilities and new gadgets," said Rocksteady, as translated from Danish print mag Game Reactor. "Batman will need to use a large number of said gadgets as in many of the game’s difficult encounters as he won’t always be the strongest."

While not a comic book nut, I am certainly keeping an eager eye on Arkham Asylum. The promise of a Batman that stalks and psychs out his enemies, plus appearances from a wide variety of the Rogue's Gallery, makes this Eidos-published venture a most promising one indeed.

This game is sounding better and better, I hope it delivers. A good batman game is sorely needed.

Um, let me get this straight. Batman is trapped inside of Arkham Asylum, full of the multitudes of crooks that he himself has brought to justice. How much more experience does he need?

"I've studied martial arts the world over. For decades, I've polished my fighting abilities. But cracking you in the face just now has inspired me to start using this new 5 attack combo."

Well, if they can be as sucessful with it as Marvel Alliance was, then it shouldn't be too bad.

Haxan nailed it on the head.

And yeah, I'm hopeful that this game could be good, but didn't we get the claims of "getting into the heads of enemies" in the Batman Begins hype? Yes, we did.

Another bullshit "RPG" system. I already pay fifteen bucks a month for MMO leveling tedium. Please keep it out of my Batman.

hmm. well most action adventure games have a leveling up system. But then again would this be action adventure or open world? I have no idea, it still looks good though.

I am willing to bet that the best weapons will be available for purchase as DLC the day this game comes out and negate the value of experience.

I have high hopes for this game. Any word on whether or not Kevin Conroy is doing the voice of Batman? I'm pretty sure I read Mark Hamill was in as The Joker.

Can we get a good Batman game finally?

Haxan wins.

The penny arcade from Monday sums up the problem with this perfectly.

"I am Isilidur, King of Gondor! With the hilt-shard of Narsil, I cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger during the seige of Mordor."

"Oh! I stepped into a creek and died."

The idea that Batman (or any established badass) gains more abilities with experience is just one of those concessions that are necessary for the sake of game design. Is it any more silly that having Alucard or Samus suddenly losing all their abilities in the begining of the game? Also, last I heard Kevin Conroy was indeed voicing Bats.

Hang on this progression mechanic has been in games forever. I distinctly remember having to research new weapons and abilities in Syndicate, instead of "experience" it was research time. No bloody difference, the more you play the better you get - what's wrong with that. As long as you dont have to kill 100 rats or go and find 50 identical keys or summat I don't mind.
