Arizona man pays $400 for Wii, opens box to find a block of wood photo

I'm not sure what annoys me more: the fact that this poor guy was duped by some jerk who decided to sell him a $400 chunk of firewood, or that the writer from ABC calls the item "A Wii game" repeatedly in her article about the incident. You write for ABC, don't you think you could have possibly researched the situation enough to know that the Wii is called a "console" and not a "game?" Do your job, you illiterate trollop.

Anyway, the incident is sadly not a new trend, but of course it's no less distressing for people when it actually happens to them. An Arizona resident won the console on eBay in February, paid $400 for it, and received a Wii box with a block of wood in it shortly thereafter. He filed a complaint with eBay, who found the seller's account had promptly been closed after the transaction took place. They are currently conducting an investigation into the fraud.

A word of advice to all the non-gamer adults out there: don't pay double for the Wii. The reason you want one so bad is because everyone you know wants one, which is very likely more important to you than actually playing the damned thing. Then when you get it you can invite all those people over to play multiplayer games and waggle your Wiimotes at each other and in a few months there'll be a thin layer of dust on it and you'll forget why you clamored for it in the first place. Trust us -- we're real gamers. We know.

[Via ABC15 - thanks, Jonathan]

Colette is right. There are some great games for the Wii, but for many of us the Wii remains largely unplayed. This isn't "biased journalism," this is a video game blog where people express their opinions. If Destrutoid was about unbiased journalism, I wouldn't be visiting the site. Every editor here has their own personality and their own opinions and they should be allowed to express them.

Colette was most likely trying to make a light-hearted joke to close out her post (because she's just that adorable) and people latched onto it like nothing else she wrote matters.

People have different opinions, if you don't agree with them you've fortunately found one of the only game blogs that gives you an outlet to express you own opinion: they're called cblogs.

@Qais - Maybe you're never going to be a real journalist because you use words like "butthurt" to try to get a rise out of total strangers.

@ Colette - Apologies. I'm retracting my initial comment. I'm not sure why I thought you called us Wiifanboys idiots when it was another commenter, but a re-read shows that I am unjustifiably butt-hurt.

Qais is still a hack.

This is why I do Craigslist instead of eBay. Because I can go to the guy's house and get it, and if that fucker didn't give me waht I'm paying for; somebody's getting their teeth knocked out.

there is a group of people who think the Wii is a dust-coated gimmicky waggle-box with no good games and that only stupid people could enjoy playing
We're a pretty big group, but you don't have to join us because we're right. You should join us because we're

At least that block of wood doesn't have any stupid games for it and the guy can still shake it at his TV, mind you it would do more damage without that wooden bracelet to keep it attached to his hand.

The guy can pump iron (wood) with it for easy biceps so he can punch the seller in the face.

@ Stripe - I appreciate it. I don't have ANYTHING against Wii fans whatsoever, which is why these comments are so confusing. As I said before, I just haven't connected with many games on it, but I still hope I will in future! (crosses fingers for Wiiware stuff)

"Trust us -- we're real gamers. We know." speak for yourself, woman. It's ok to give your own opinion, but donīt throw every other gamer in the same bag.

I enjoy my Wii and many of its games. Of course, that means Iīm not a "real" gamer according to you. Oh well, I really donīt care, at least I donīt cry like a little girl for the difficulty of some games *cough* PSPCastlevania *cough* go play Petz or something like that, k thnx.

I still think the console has a lot of untapped potential, and it isn't without problems (minigame collections and licensed garbage, for starters), but I never once regretted waiting most of all-night to get mine four months after launch. I'm also looking forward to WiiWare, but I hope the console's tiny bit of internal memory doesn't become overly restrictive. (i.e., forcing developers to be efficient coders instead of being lazy because they have 20+ GB's to work with. I'm looking at you, Kojima.)

Her calling the console a Wii "game" hits at the heart of what's going on in the public and in the media; the mass-market sees the Wii as not a console capable of playing many different things and being expanded upon, but as a single device, much like a 40-in-1 Atari TV thing. This is what divides the mass market Wii owner from the "hardcore" Wii owner, not the "casual" games.

Hey so, when you all say that your Wii/PS3 is gathering dust does that mean you pick up and shake your 360s when you play them?

Collette isn't a Nintendo hating trollop. I seem to remember her getting really excited for some DS game or another awhile back.

Anyway, she's not exactly right, dude up there who said that she was. Personal opinion is only right when applied to the person who's...opinion it is. And those who share it, I guess. All it means in the end is that she hasn't found anything on the Wii that makes her all bubbly inside, and she has said as much. More power to her then.

Still, the hyperbole and whatnot is a little overwrought, but aint that what most of us are here for? The silly shit that comes off as borderline fan-boy/girl trolling? It shows that they're not monkeys being paid to shill shit, and t's all tongue-in-cheek anyway as I see it. Even when there's truth behind it as is the case here.

In the end though, it's not like any of these fine people make my gaming decisions for me. There's really no use getting bent out of shape because Collette doesn't see what we see in the system.

You know, everyone makes fun of the 360 on a regular basis because of RRoD, but you don't see 360 fanboys complaining about it.

Every console has its idiosyncrasies that make it fun to poke fun at. For the Wii, it's its gimicky control scheme for many games and the lack of serious games. Get over it.

Nobody should be spending $400 on a Wii in the first place, whether they actually get a Wii or a block of wood from some douchebaggy asshat (or should that be asshatted douchebag?). And this is coming from a self-proclaimed Nintendo Fanboy™ who actually likes the damn thing.

I'll ignore the (perceived) Nintendo-bashing or whatever, because it's just not worth taking the time to say anything about it, aside from the time it takes to declare that I'm not going to say anything about it. That time is totally worthwhile, of course. At any rate, this wasn't even in Robert Summa's league, so I don't know why people are getting so riled up about it. People make offhand remarks about consoles all the time, and annoying though they may be to some, it's not anything to get so worked up over. If people (and also fanboys) would learn this, we would all live happier lives.

However, repeat this sentiment in every single post you write for the next year or so, and then I'll get back to you on the Summa comparison.

No one, and I mean no one will probably ever come close to Summa. I don't even think that should be crossing people's minds. But, even he liked some Wii games. (Wasn't it Trama Center? Or was it Z&W?)

Anyway, I still miss the guy.

While I hate to admit it, as a lifelong Nintendo fan, Colette is totally right in this case. I wish it weren't so, but I do not see as many good games out for Wii as even something like the Gamecube.

Even though the Wii has a not so good selection right now, tomorrow it will be significantly better.
