Are you ready for a Cars MMO? photo

Besides being a video game junkie I am also obsessed with Pixar movies. I love them all and pretty much worship the hallowed ground that John Lasseter walks on. Yes, I would even drink the Kool-Aid for him.

According to Mike Goslin, an online gaming developer, Disney is in talks of turning some of its Pixar films into MMOs, including (and maybe first and foremost) the blockbuster Cars. Says Goslin:

Disney is very interested in this space. A lot of Disney's properties would work really well as worlds. We're in concept development on about a dozen things; we haven't picked yet, but we'd love to do some of the Pixar properties. We're thinking of Cars.

Obviously things are very early if nothing has even been decided on conceptual, but I have to be honest: all of the Pixar films could work really well as giant online worlds. And with the saturation of MMO nowadays maybe Cars would work best, if only because it would offer something completely different (read: playing as an actual car). An MMO with driving game mechanics? Sounds neat.

What do you think? Would you be interested in an MMO based around the weirdly morbid human-less world of Cars? If any Pixar movie could be turned into an MMO, which would you prefer? Are the hardcore WOW fans of the world going to punch me in the face for even thinking this blasphemy?

As far as MMOs go...

Incredibles > Toy Story > Cars

I don't think you ever have to worry about a "hardcore WoW" fan punching you in the *anything*.

Toy Story, baby. Although Cars would be interesting.

Yeah, I thought about how cool The Incredibles would be. But then I thought about playing as an Etch n' Sketch and had a joy explosion. :)

Cars actually does sound pretty fun. I like the idea of just driving around. But yeah, all of Pixar's worlds are so well-realized that no movie of theirs would be out of place as an MMO.

Screw Cars. I want an MMO of the short with that old guy playing chess with himself. That would be EPIC!

Errm, but wasn't Auto Assault supposed to be a vehicle-based MMO? We all saw how well that one ended up...

YEAH! And the peeps from the Little Mermaid are another playable race. Then I could finally bone Ariel under her fiery red tent-like bangs.

A Bug's Life COULD be interesting, but it'd most likely be so aimed at kids as to be watered down and dull.

Mostly I just wanted to say what an awesome image that is

omg... any mmo game related to "cars" or the movie cars is homo. Driving a car is about skill of the driver... its not about leveling up cuz you beat some quest. IMO its retarded and should be shot down as fast as it was brought up...

MMO's are become WAY to over rated! and this is coming from a MMO fiend!

Didn't they sort of try this with Test Drive: Unlimited? I know it wasn't a true MMO, but it sucked big time. I would loooove to see "The Incredibles" made into a MMO =)

I like Pixar a lot. The Incredibles is FANTASTIC; one of the best movies of the last 20 years. However, Cars was dull as dishwater, the weakest of the Pixar films by a large margin. They went all Dreamworks in it-- celebrity voices (and incredible dull ones at that-- Owen Wilson?), pop-culture references, cliched, done-a-hundred-times plot. It was impossible to stay awake through that one.

Movie-games are never any good, what makes anyone think trying to make them into an MMO would create an exception to the rule?

sOlesurvivor: BEST AVATAR EVER!

Anyway cars VOULD work as a MMORPG why? is actually a different world (or reality) based on a known franchise we know almost nothing about and is actually doable since the only efforts there have been failures mostly due to lack of proper advertising and branding (not a problem for disney) if they set a low price for kids, you can bet its a sure seller. Specially for consoles (even the Wii maybe?).

Of course I would love a "Incredibles" , monsters inc or bugs life, toy story mmo.. but they are already done (succesfully City of heroes) or simply wouldnt work. (how much of bugs life can you stretch for an MMo? life in an ANT colony for kids? boring!)

I cant believe you havent mentioned the Obvious non pixar current property that could work as a MMO too, which one? Pirates of the caribbean that crappy movie is practically a non-interactive children videogame. And pirates RPG's are somehow lacking so is a niche that could easily be covered.

Sorry but that just my business game dev, doing the talking. I will be sure to reprimend it heavily later.

I'd say Incredibles, but it would probably just turn out as a City of Heroes clone. A Bugs Life might be interesting, but I'd say that Cars would certianly be a bit more interesting.
