No need to stand while playing Super Street Fighter IV. According to SFIV producer Yoshinori Ono, the title will be a couch-constricted affair. That is to say, of course, that the title won’t be gracing arcades -- Japanese or otherwise.
Ono broke the bad news in an interview with Games Reactor. “So, unfortunately, I’m sorry to say to arcade fans out there: there won’t be an arcade version of this. I think a lot of people were kind of requesting an arcade update,” he said. “I know that, in some parts of the world, it doesn’t really matter if there’s an arcade version or not.”
“But certainly in Japan and the rest of Asia and some parts of the Oceania, there’s still a lot of people playing in arcades. So, I’m sorry to disappoint them but this time it’s going to be an Xbox 360- and Playstation 3-only affair,” Ono continued.
More than a few people not affiliated with Putt-Putt Mini-Golf aren’t accepting what Ono-san revealed. These spirited folks, the members of Shoryuken message board, may end up tossing together an official petition. At least, that’s what this thread seems to indicate.
As a dude that hasn’t played a game in an arcade since Revolution X, the fact that SSFIV won’t be at arcades isn’t much of a bummer. But how do you guys feel about it?

Still, Street Fighter IV was debatably the best first iteration in the entire 20 year series when it comes to this particular issue so I'm not completely without hope.
"Still, Street Fighter IV was debatably the best first iteration in the entire 20 year series when it comes to this particular issue"
I'd agree that its debateably the best first iteration in the history of fighting games.
To me this shows they're kind of aiming for the western market a little harder.
Yeah, agreed. But eight to ten new characters, 25 to rebalance, and no arcade version acting as a sounding board? I'm losing nails fast.
Still..what about the arcade players that don't have a console? =/ They can buy one though :P
I don't know how "updating" cabinets work, but you know what I mean.
Outside of America the arcade scene is alive in Asia and Europe. Even Australia has a decent scene. And if you are deep into it, you know that Japan is far and away years ahead of anywhere else in terms of skill and knowledge of the game (That's because here no one shares anything and over there they share everything on top of always playing the best and getting better)
It's already bad enough that Japan is letting SF4 fall to nothing as it is. There's more and more Taito Type X2 boards being sold back (That's SF4's hardware) and SF4 is slipping down the Arcade games list. It was never #1 (Tekken is and always has been. There was 1 time it wasn't and that's because they were upgrading to Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion) and I think it actually peaked at #3. But it's been slipping ever since in favor of Gundam arcade games, BlazBlue, Deathsmiles, Virtua Fighter, and Guilty Gear. Even Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is putting up a fight with it.
So this might be the last cry that SF4 has before the most advanced part of the fighting game community drops it completely. This will cause literally a HUGE drop in discovery and innovation into the system of the game itself. Everyone else will just move along at the slower pace they always have been while not really being able to find the full potential of the game in anywhere close of the amount of time that Japan would be able to.
so what your getting at is i need to start a chain of arcades in america to compete with the other world markets? aka japan?
mission accepted.
Yeah I agree, I think itll hurt the competitive scene too. Unless they decide to exclusively use this edition only in tourneys like EVO, SBO, etc.
I doubt this will actually hinder innovation in any significant way. You'll still have the insanity of the East Coast and West Coast scenes tearing through them. These guys tore apart MvC2, which was a much, much more complex game.
@looptron
I don't think this will hurt the competitive scene at all. Lets be honest, how many people own a 360/PS3 as compared to how many own a SF4 cab? Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if arcade owners order custom cabinets (empty), then mount a console in there with a copy of the game, and just make it look like an arcade cab. I really think you're over reacting.
@Cataract It will hurt the competitive scene in that the high level play that we see coming from Japan will be removed, therefor greatly decreasing the potential for the highest level of play in a shorter amount of time. As it stands, US Street Fighter is years behind Japanese Street Fighter and we're copying them anyway. Without that knowledge and talent for us to chase and compete with, we'll (everyone else in the community) will progress at a much slower rate.
Just look at 2002 EVO Street Fighter III: We thought we were awesome, had it all figured out. Everyone thought Urien was shit and his Aegis was useless. Then Tokido comes over and does something that Japan is used to seeing but America has no idea and never saw before: The Aegis Reflector mix-ups. Justin Wong was turned into a combo video. To this day, America still does not know how to play 3rd Strike on the level of Japan and it's been 10 years.
Look at SBO: All foreign teams, US and otherwise, were knocked out first round. There was no chance of advancing to the 2nd round anywhere for anyone who didn't live there and play with that kind of level. There's maybe 4-5 people in America who can compete on Japan's level, and that's fighting their "scrubs"
Also, you're right, arcade owners may start ordering consoles and throwing some sanwa buttons in Hori sticks or getting custom made Viewlix consoles or whatever stick layout is required, but with how things are right now, I don't see that happening. The Japanese don't play HDRemix. They play vanilla ST on the original cabinets. If they wanted to I'm sure they'd do that too and HDR would be a completely different game right now but they aren't and won't.
There's a petition right now going around to get this an arcade release. I hope it works out because if not, then it's bye bye advancing anywhere in SF4.
This is potentially scene-killing for SFIV. Capcom really needs to reconsider this decision.
Oh well, at least they are working on better online play.
That's the online petition from SRK that has been going around. Sign it if you want this to happen.
Capcom I truly in my heart of hearts hope that you reconsider.
THIS KIND OF THING DOES NOT HAPPEN ON XBOX LIVE OR AT SHITTY CONSOLE TOURNAMENTS! THIS EXPERIENCE IS ARCADE EXCLUSIVE!
Me, Soul Calibur 2.
That kind of stuff happens CONSISTENTLY at console tournaments. Basically every Major tourny (and a lot of smaller ones) sees reactions like that all the time. That's not to say I don't wish I had an arcade near me (our old arcade was one of my favorite places EVER), but to say that kind of excitement doesn't happen outside of arcades is flatout wrong.
As for this news...
It doesn't effect me much with ZERO arcades ANYWHERE near me, but this seems like a bad decision overall. The first arcade run for fighting games is actually pretty similar to a beta test for any other genre of games. Glitches get fixed, infinites taken out, and minor balancing decisions can be made before the console release.
Oh well, if they stick to minor changes to the original characters and don't go stupid/crazy with the new ones, we should still have a pretty balanced game.
Capcom and Japanese players have expressed interest into having a proper HD Remix arcade cabinet made. It would be pretty darn awesome if they made a brand new SF2 arcade cabinet with all the new stuff HD Remix offers.
Okay, now I'm getting a little worried about this.
pics or it didn't happen.
I honestly can't believe you're doubting me, but I'll try to take some at Rumble in the Tundra III or NEC 2009.
I should be going to at least one of those. RitT should have at least 100 people and NEC consistently gets several hundred.
For some immediate proof, here's an article (with pics and a vid with highlight tags) on the SFIV tourny at EVO 2009. The big matches even get commentary over the speaker system and are shown on huge projection screens for the hundreds of people in attendance to watch.

Seriously, I can't believe you think this stuff only happens in arcades. Do you live in Japan? Because console tournies are pretty much our only option in the states.
You might want also want to note that half the crowd raises their hands in the air like Rufus every time Justin Wong pulls off his Ultra.
This shit happens all the time.
dude I was AT evo 09. hahaha. I live in So Cal man, and the arcade scene here is huge, at least at the arcades I frequent, Denjin Arcade and Arcade Infinity namely. Bro believe me I'm not just doubting you just to be a dick, I know alot of major tournaments here in the states take place on console, but there's really just something about the arcade environment that makes it different.
you just gotta be there, man.
I don't know, I guess it's like going to the dojo to practice and then people all come to yours to prove who's the best while the console and home games take that away. I think it's turned the tournament scene into a city and coast based battle instead of an arcade based battle. Yes I know there was the East vs West awhile ago but it didn't seem as prominent as it does today.
