Apple tablet rumored to be a gaming device photo

You know that Apple tablet you keep hearing about? Rumors are flying, pointing to everything from Apple's answer to netbooks to this latest, a game system. It's actually both, according to one person who claims to have seen the device; it's a netbook that plays games.

This big-assed 10-inch iPod touch screen thing will sync and Wi-Fi stream from other devices in your home, says the unnamed analyst that peeped it. He says that it was actually designed to play games on, though no specifics of how this works were given.

I find it easy to believe that Apple would create a device that cashes in on their App Store. I'm kind of hoping for games that have a bit more depth than your average iPhone game, but I suppose having blown-up existing App Store titles would be pretty cool as well.

I wonder how much this thing is going to cost.

Interesting, but no tactile controller feedback means an EXTREMELY limited library of games. Or at least a library of games that are worse versions of those on other platforms.

Ahrg! Cheap instincts taking over.....begs for price tag lower than 500...arrrrg.

Whoa. That was weird. Well, now that I'm back to normal, I can say that this looks to be very intriguing.

$699-$799 according to "insiders" and industry analysts (via macrumors and engadget). But take that with a grain of salt.

Anyway, sounds about right with Apple's current pricing scheme. More expensive than the iPhone, but close enough to $499 to perhaps grab some netbook sales.

I still wonder how this is going to affect their core laptop business. Would a media tablet have a stripped down OSX like the iPhone to keep driving regular laptop purchases?

Depends if it will work like a wacom cintiq or not. If it does, then it's not bad at all. Tablet PC for fast net browsing, a few games (as others have said, this might not be a good idea for proper gaming), and drawing would be really nice.

If it had a controller, it would be wireless. I agree though, touchscreen + accelerometer gaming isn't much fun for action games. I'm sure Apple is equally aware of this.

It would be cool if it was not for playing video games, but tabletop games (using multitouch). Like the Philips gametable, which never seemed to appear on sale.

Yeah right...

Gamers can't even seem to justify the 400$ for a PS3, let alone the 700-800$ this thing is rumoured to cost (but considering how overpriced Apple products are then 800$ seems just about right). And seeing how we're talking about Apple, they're only going to offer an Atom (hopefully some dual-core variant) with two gigs of RAM and the cheapest integrated graphics from ATI or Nvidia, nowhere near as powerful as a dedicated console.

Maybe something dedicated to casual gamers, but then again i can't see any casuals choosing this over the iPhone/iPod Touch or the Zune HD with Tegra, Creative Zii and Snapdragon equipped portable devices.

The reason it would rock for tabletop games rather than regular games is that the tablet is the ideal format to give two or more players control on one screen. Just reach in and touch your pieces. No dice required.

Meanwhile, the touchscreen is actually an impediment for most single-player designs, as iPhone developers have found. Problem is, the iPhone is too small to be practical for two or three or four players to play at once.

Because you could totally fit a top-end graphics card into that?

That's the other reason this should be for tabletop games - no need for decent 3d performance.

Screw games, I'm gonna use this to hook it up to the DHD control crystal so I can reroute power and dial out to the SGC gate. Damn Shol'va putting DRM on my music in this world.

10 in screen really doesn't make for very good "tabletop" gaming. I doubt it'll have a controller either. Sorry Apple but MS beat you to the punch on this one, you're not going to get any closer to gaming than your iPod Touch already is.

You could play chess or go or even scrabble on a 10-inch screen, easily enough. I agree it's not ideal, though. I still think this idea makes more sense than trying to play regular single-player games with a touchscreen interface and no tactile feedback.

Looks big enough and nice enough though to sit on a rack/stand and have a few USB things plugged into it (or at least hubbed into it), which would blow this jammy wide open for all sorts of control

Id love to see a bunch of idiots on the bus or train or anywhere else in public trying to play an accelerometer based game on a 10 inch slab of glass and metal. I can see people dropping them left and right and it would be hilarious.

Or.... you could simply use it to sit on the couch, play games while watching TV. Granted that's $800 bucks to do so, but don't expect anything more from something like this. Just sit on the couch, play plants vs. Zombies, twitter, facebook, flickr, draw some picture with the add on pen. jot-down ideas on the yellow note paper app, and finally read some eBooks (because you KNOW that's coming). NOTHING MORE. This thing will fly off the shelf, by every chick in america, as soon as it appears on Oprah.

Think about who's Apple's target audience is? As long as it's cute, easy to use, and compact -- it will be a hit.

So its an over-sized iPhone/iTouch that will stroke your ego even more than your usual shiny Apple product? Unfortunately I don't have enough children, limbs and land to sell for this.

@jamBOT, if i want to sit on the couch and play casual games like Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies + surfing the web i already got a 250€ MSI Wind and a 200€ Asus Eee PC to choose from (one has an Atom and 10 inch screen, the other has a Celeron and 9 inch screen plus a 30$ aftermarket touchscreen). This thing will fail like the Macbook Air if it's going to retail for 700-800$. The only reason the iPods and iPhones took of was because of affordable pricing (after telco subsidy in case of the iPhone).

This is stupid. Touch and motion control is a fucking niche. ESPECIALLY touch. I really don't understand everyone's hardon for touch screens on EVERY FUCKING DEVICE THEY OWN. Ok, ok, it's neat for phones I guess, but why would you seriously want a gaming device build around touch only? Even the DS has fucking buttons, so you can play a normal game if you want. This is retarded but people are going to beat off to it because it's from Apple.

1) The picture above is a rendering. It's not the actual tablet. Nobody knows what it's going to look like.
2) It won't have an Atom. It will be an Apple-owned subsidiary that manufactures the processor, according to most rumors.
3) Nobody games on those cheap underpowered netbooks which run a comparable size, so I don't know why people are whining.
4) The iPhone has more GPU power than the Wii, but this doesn't seem to hurt Nintendo's sales at all. An iTablet wouldn't need a hardcore graphics engine. The PSP has gotten along just fine without one.
5) Nobody has suggested this will kill the PSP or the DS, or any other platform, but with a stand of some kind, and maybe a wireless controller or something, it might make a decent game system. The Apple app store has proven that there are plenty of games that run great with just a touchscreen interface.

Apple's prices are fair game, but don't be stupid.

Why would someone buy this when they could just boot camp off their Macbook and play games on there instead? I could only see this being good for casual gamers. Really, no Apple product is ever designed with gaming in mind (That's just how it is).

Oh... the Macbook Air is just a waste of time. So we're in total agreement there. It's not a "REAL" computer at all. However, I don't think the "iTablet will fail", it will be overpriced YES, again we're in agreement. They should not ask for more then $300 bucks, but I KNOW they will ask for more.

It's the target audience that Apple is going for, which is NOT US. Artist, Teens, Housewives, Mac Fanboys, Book snobs, people with extra cash who want to show off, and Non-tech people. Apple will throw that new Snow Leopard OS on it and market it as the "iPhone for everyone" People will eat it up. Again, NOT US.

@jamBOT:

You can add students to that list. I would love a decent tablet for taking notes in college. It's smaller, and I'm sure it would weigh less than 4 notebooks. How many decent tablet PCs can you think of in that price range? And how many of those run OSX or some other variant? Zero.

I'm sure it would be similarly useful for meetings and other business needs.

You can generalize all you like, but Apple makes decent products with usability in mind. And there's a market for a good re-envisioning of the tablet PC, as there was a good market for a good re-envisioning of the cellular phone.

Just about anybody who owns an iPhone loves the device, if they do not love the price, and I wager if you'd ever owned a recent Apple product, you'd STFU.
