Apple's iPhone has over 6,000 games now photo

It's actually 6,276, according to analytics firm Mobclix. They say that 1,516 of the available games for the Jesus Phone are actually free. I say that none of those free games are any good.

Having over 6,000 games doesn't mean much when most of them are crap. We know: we've looked at many of them. I think it's a case of quantity over quality right now, unfortunately.  That's not to say that all of them are crap; we've played a few great ones, too.

Here's how the iPhone offerings break down according to the Mobclix site

  • 2,147 puzzle games
  • 1,358 arcade games
  • 1,310 action titles
  • 393 sports (lol)
  • 116 racing
That's great. But after trying about 40 games, I'm not feeling the device as a gaming machine. I like the puzzle games, but that's about it. That may just be me, though. My phone is for calling people and tweeting about seeing Ron Jeremy and panty shots and the like. You know, normal stuff.

There are some fun games out there for it, but they are a little few and far between. Also I agree, its still a phone to me first and everything else second. The cool thing about it is anyone can code a game for it if they have the knowhow and buy the dev kit from Apple. I think its $1,000 for the kit and $100 for apple to approve the app and put it up, but you get most of the procedes if you charge for it. You can make some good coin doing that.

@PPK: Hard to complain about shovelware when that's all that's available. =P

It also has at least four different Mafia-themed RPG games. *rolleyes*

It's the PS2 of phone gaming. Loads of crap with a few gems.

"But after trying about 40 games, I'm not feeling the device as a gaming machine."

Folks are still figuring out how to use it and program for it. Besides, Square could shovel Chrono Trigger onto it and then all the fanboys would be riding the iTouch jock.

Of course everyone has to remember that it's an open platform. Anyone can develop for it and publish games for it. I don't see articles on d'toid about how 95% of the indie games for PC are crap, right?

The cost of making a crap game is low. As much as one would hope for a crash to level the playing field into quality over quantity, I think the digital distribution model (cell phones count, I reckon) just has too great a benefit for people thatfling apps against the wall (ie the distribution store) and sees what sticks.

I'll write better comments, I promise.

To truly make it a gaming device, you need to do two things:
1) Jailbreak
Don't worry kids, no matter what apple says, it's legal to do so.

2) Install some of the stuff Zod made: excellent emulators for the Genesis, GBA, SNES, and even the Playstation. The PS emulator doesn't run full speed (yet), but it's playable.

Of course apple's app store has some nice games too. Hero of Sparta, Sway, iDracula and Kroll jump to mind.

Isn't pretty much every platform ever a case of quantity over quality? Every entertainment medium? Most iPhone games are probably targeting the same non-gaming types who bought a Wii, which is perfectly understandable. The quality divide makes it easy to tell apart developers who want to make games for the revenue from the developers who want to make games so good that the revenue comes naturally.

I say it is a gaming system just because I carry it around everywhere. I don't want to lug a PSP or a DS everywhere I go, but you'd better believe I have my phone everywhere I go. Also, it has some good freeware games. There's this game cube runner where you use the gyroscope to steer a ship amongst obstacles. Probably one of the most rudimentary games I've ever played (it's graphics make Galaga look futuristic), but that doesn't stop it from being a fun time killer. Also, Sim City is fun for those long "unscheduled" breaks on the toilet at work.

I like playing games on my iphone. I can't carry my ds or psp everywhere. There are some good games available among many, many bad ones, just like every other system I've owned. Move on, haters.
