A satirical iOS game about trucking Mexicans across the US border has been rejected by Apple for being racist. Because of course, when you dare say that some Mexicans are illegal immigrants, you are of course stating that all Mexicans are illegal immigrants.
Smuggle Truck was created out of the developer's frustration at his friends having a hard time immigrating to the United States. As someone who's done it himself, I can sympathize with the amount of bullshit it requires, and it's significantly easier for me to do it than a Mexican person. Yet, despite the critical, satirical message, Apple deemed it racist and refused to let it go up.
The answer? Turn the Mexicans into animals, call it Snuggle Truck instead of Smuggle Truck, and resubmit it. The upcoming PC and Mac version of the game will include Smuggle Truck as an optional re-skin, but on iOS, it's all about helping animals escape the zoo for a life of freedom.
It's $2.99 on iTunes and the art is by Curse of Monkey Island's Bill Tiller. Just be glad all that horrid racism is gone. Your children can sleep easy tonight.

Mexican is not a race.
I wish Jim pointed that out, but I guess the British is as ignorant as Americans.
Haha! Grammatical error! "British is as ignorant". I love irony.
Anyway, it seems obvious that loads of effort has gone into this game, and I just hate it when this all goes to waste when it might offend somebody. It's tyranny by the minority. Actually no, it's tyranny by presumption, as I would bet that most Mexicans wouldn't really care about this.
Pretty soon my people will be the majority, lol.
STFU, crackah-ass crackah! U RACISS MUHFUCKUH.
/we're-doomed-laced-sarcasm
How a out a game where all the anglos, euros and others get sent back to what ever country of origin they belong?! Fuckin pasty disease spreading land stealing bastards.
Also, "Smuggle Truck" -> "Snuggle Truck" is hilarious.
Shut up. I've been awake since 5.
Actually Latino is an ethnic group that includes different nationalities and races. The commonly accepted racial categories include White, Black, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Asian or Pacific Islander.
Despite the fact that many Latinos consider that to be their race, they can all be categorized into one of the four race categories as well. This is why surveys/censuses and the like ask the race question followed by "are you of Hispanic or Latino origin?"
That said, this game is not racist.
But it is culturally insensitive as a motherfucker.
Or how about a game about how European heritage people have more privilege and usually don't have to encounter racism (one day of it, or even quite a few encounters does not compare to a lifetime).
I get it, it's satire.. but why don't we make games depicting issues that are sensitive to the European American community (in terms of race and ethnicity issues)? Why is it that communities of color are the focus?
I'm glad you did acknowledge that it's easier for some people (white White Europeans) than other communities (Mexican communities, African, etc). But why not make the game real satire and show western European immigrants trying to immigrate to the USA and how it would have been if the Native Americans were as strict as the USA is today.
My though on this is that developers are more okay with pissing off non-white communities... don't you think? More European-heritage US citizens can afford the fancy phones, games, systems, pcs so you won't see them exploring issues of race, ethnicity or culture that might make the European-heritage consumer and audience uncomfortable.
@topogigio Hate to tell you this but white people are also encountering racism in these modern times. It's just harder to spot, and the people guilty of said racism feel justified in doing it because of history. I think that's crap and no one is entitled to commit a racist act against someone else for any reason.
Secondly, I highly doubt the developers were thinking about ways to piss off minorities when they made this. It's satire through-and-through. It should be looked at by its merit as a game. It's not like they just made up something to hate on Mexico. This is a thing that happens, and it's illegal. No matter how sad the story, it's illegal. The law is not supposed to be subjective or based on the defendants sadness. It's based on the law.
Just because something is law, doesn't mean it's right.
Mexico has STRICT immigration laws. How is that fair? Almost EVERY other country in the world has strict immigration and customs laws. Some have extorted money from my family while we traveled by withholding our belongings and making us pay them. Corruption runs rampant in many countries when it comes to customs. England is notoriously racist and anti-immigration. Heck, all of West Europe is that way. France kicks out the gypsies, Germany has openly stated that they think letting in Turkish people was a bad idea, and Britain has an unsettling amount of hate for foreigners and plenty of racism, especially against SE Asians.
America is one of the most welcoming countries in the world. One of the least bigoted. We're just portrayed that way by other countries, even though other countries are usually terribly racist.
Illegal immigration is illegal, we enforce laws. We have the right to enforce valid laws, and other countries enforce the same laws as well. It's sad that some people have terrible lives and try to flee in search of something better for their children, but it's against the law. The kind of mentality that would allow that (purely categorical moral reasoning) is counter-productive and inefficient and too subjective. Illegal things are illegal. What if someone stile money from a bank but they needed it to pay for their 5 kids' cancer treatments and save their lives? Is it okay then?
"Secondly, I highly doubt the developers were thinking about ways to piss off minorities when they made this."
Unintentional bigotry is still bigotry, and it's far more prevalent than classic blatant, unabashed bigotry. A lot harder to fix, too.
If you think this is bigotry than you don't understand bigotry. You can't accidentally be a bigot. Bigotry is radical close-mindedness, not specifically racism. I'd go so far as to say that most of the people opposing this game have bigoted views.
Seriously though, Smuggle Truck doesn't look very racist or bigoted. It looks like satire, and a lot more subtle satire than "Alien Jihad".
But really, really. Not liking illegal acts is not bigotry.
you one oft hose people that dont read articles, just post based on the title, right?
This game was made by mexican guy becuase his friends have difficulty emigrating, read the damn article.
The part that pissed me off was the bonus points from catching babies that randomly popped out of the back of the truck. I'm betting that's probably what inspired Apple to reject the game. In my mind, that part is not satirical, just racist.
I didn't know that it was a common stereotype that babies fell off the back of trucks and were then caught, resulting in a massive boost in points for the illegal immigrants, thus allowing them more points to spend on upgrades.
Bigotry isn't exclusive to radical hatred, it can be subtle, under the surface. I'm just saying, you can be offensive without making it your explicit objective. It's the same idea as a backhanded compliment.
@NoBodysGamer
I read the article, don't worry.
