Apple rejects illegal immigration game photo

A satirical iOS game about trucking Mexicans across the US border has been rejected by Apple for being racist. Because of course, when you dare say that some Mexicans are illegal immigrants, you are of course stating that all Mexicans are illegal immigrants.

Smuggle Truck was created out of the developer's frustration at his friends having a hard time immigrating to the United States. As someone who's done it himself, I can sympathize with the amount of bullshit it requires, and it's significantly easier for me to do it than a Mexican person. Yet, despite the critical, satirical message, Apple deemed it racist and refused to let it go up.

The answer? Turn the Mexicans into animals, call it Snuggle Truck instead of Smuggle Truck, and resubmit it. The upcoming PC and Mac version of the game will include Smuggle Truck as an optional re-skin, but on iOS, it's all about helping animals escape the zoo for a life of freedom.

It's $2.99 on iTunes and the art is by Curse of Monkey Island's Bill Tiller. Just be glad all that horrid racism is gone. Your children can sleep easy tonight.

I guess I have to be the one to say it:

Mexican is not a race.

I wish Jim pointed that out, but I guess the British is as ignorant as Americans.

Illegal immigration is bad, but stealing someone else's game and putting it up for sale before the creators themselves have managed to is a-okay.

Haha! Grammatical error! "British is as ignorant". I love irony.

Anyway, it seems obvious that loads of effort has gone into this game, and I just hate it when this all goes to waste when it might offend somebody. It's tyranny by the minority. Actually no, it's tyranny by presumption, as I would bet that most Mexicans wouldn't really care about this.

Nah, Mattrodroid, expecting people to respect our laws and sovereignty is clearly racist, because we're a nation of immigrants. Who cares if the immigrants this nation was built on came in the front door, instead of sneaking in the back? I mean they are just doing the jobs Americans won't do for slave wages, and if people had to pay the true cost of house keeping, landscaping, and food why that would just be the end of society oif the price of my salad went up.

As a Mexican-American who's parents were smuggled over on a truck, I never found this to be racist. It's pretty great satire, actually. The developers were careful about that.

@ PhilK3nS3bb3n-

Actually Latino is an ethnic group that includes different nationalities and races. The commonly accepted racial categories include White, Black, American Indian or Alaska Native, and Asian or Pacific Islander.

Despite the fact that many Latinos consider that to be their race, they can all be categorized into one of the four race categories as well. This is why surveys/censuses and the like ask the race question followed by "are you of Hispanic or Latino origin?"

That said, this game is not racist.

But it is culturally insensitive as a motherfucker.

Or how about a game depicting how European immigrants massacred the Indigenous populations and took land because they felt it was their right to own that land? (i.e. manifest destiny)

Or how about a game about how European heritage people have more privilege and usually don't have to encounter racism (one day of it, or even quite a few encounters does not compare to a lifetime).

I get it, it's satire.. but why don't we make games depicting issues that are sensitive to the European American community (in terms of race and ethnicity issues)? Why is it that communities of color are the focus?

I'm glad you did acknowledge that it's easier for some people (white White Europeans) than other communities (Mexican communities, African, etc). But why not make the game real satire and show western European immigrants trying to immigrate to the USA and how it would have been if the Native Americans were as strict as the USA is today.

My though on this is that developers are more okay with pissing off non-white communities... don't you think? More European-heritage US citizens can afford the fancy phones, games, systems, pcs so you won't see them exploring issues of race, ethnicity or culture that might make the European-heritage consumer and audience uncomfortable.

Eh. Corporations are notoriously cowardly when it comes to controversial issues like this, but on the other hand, if they take a stance on said issues it could cause them bad publicity. So... can't blame them. Also:

@topogigio Hate to tell you this but white people are also encountering racism in these modern times. It's just harder to spot, and the people guilty of said racism feel justified in doing it because of history. I think that's crap and no one is entitled to commit a racist act against someone else for any reason.

@topogigio Dear God. Really? Can we leave out the tired rhetoric here? Categorical moral reasoning like that is just terrible. Obviously the world is a better place for the atrocities committed during colonization, and obviously you don't know what you're talking about. There was a lot of underhandedness on both sides during this time period. It wasn't like shooting harmless, sad people. They hunted each other, the French allied with the natives, things happened. Plus, there are multiple tribes and when the first colonists landed they were in the territory of an aggressive and combative tribe. Stop with the white guilt, it's ridiculous. Learn to look at history with an unbiased eye. It wasn't black and white.

Secondly, I highly doubt the developers were thinking about ways to piss off minorities when they made this. It's satire through-and-through. It should be looked at by its merit as a game. It's not like they just made up something to hate on Mexico. This is a thing that happens, and it's illegal. No matter how sad the story, it's illegal. The law is not supposed to be subjective or based on the defendants sadness. It's based on the law.

No, it doesn't, but in this case it is both law and right. It's illegal immigration. Anyone who has a problem with normal immigration is a bigot, but illegal immigration is a real problem and it's against the law, hence the name.

Mexico has STRICT immigration laws. How is that fair? Almost EVERY other country in the world has strict immigration and customs laws. Some have extorted money from my family while we traveled by withholding our belongings and making us pay them. Corruption runs rampant in many countries when it comes to customs. England is notoriously racist and anti-immigration. Heck, all of West Europe is that way. France kicks out the gypsies, Germany has openly stated that they think letting in Turkish people was a bad idea, and Britain has an unsettling amount of hate for foreigners and plenty of racism, especially against SE Asians.

America is one of the most welcoming countries in the world. One of the least bigoted. We're just portrayed that way by other countries, even though other countries are usually terribly racist.

Illegal immigration is illegal, we enforce laws. We have the right to enforce valid laws, and other countries enforce the same laws as well. It's sad that some people have terrible lives and try to flee in search of something better for their children, but it's against the law. The kind of mentality that would allow that (purely categorical moral reasoning) is counter-productive and inefficient and too subjective. Illegal things are illegal. What if someone stile money from a bank but they needed it to pay for their 5 kids' cancer treatments and save their lives? Is it okay then?

Except it isn't bigotry. I hate how people have thrown around 'racism' and 'bigotry' so much that both words have lost their original meaning.

If you think this is bigotry than you don't understand bigotry. You can't accidentally be a bigot. Bigotry is radical close-mindedness, not specifically racism. I'd go so far as to say that most of the people opposing this game have bigoted views.

Seriously though, Smuggle Truck doesn't look very racist or bigoted. It looks like satire, and a lot more subtle satire than "Alien Jihad".

But really, really. Not liking illegal acts is not bigotry.

Actually met these guys at PAX East and got a demo. The creators are not Mexican and neither is their friend who was immigrating. They wouldn't tell me where he was immigrated from.

The part that pissed me off was the bonus points from catching babies that randomly popped out of the back of the truck. I'm betting that's probably what inspired Apple to reject the game. In my mind, that part is not satirical, just racist.

@les So bringing tons of people across the border in a truck is satire and perfectly fine, but it's the bonus points for catching babies that is racist?

I didn't know that it was a common stereotype that babies fell off the back of trucks and were then caught, resulting in a massive boost in points for the illegal immigrants, thus allowing them more points to spend on upgrades.

Bigotry isn't exclusive to radical hatred, it can be subtle, under the surface. I'm just saying, you can be offensive without making it your explicit objective. It's the same idea as a backhanded compliment.

How is it significantly easier for you to get in than a Mexican? I'm not doubting the hassle you went through, but Mexican immigration to the U.S. over the last few decades, both legal, and illegal, is unprecedented. There were tons of German, Irish and Italian immigration back in the day, but there were limitations on it to ensure that they assimilated. I don't have a problem with decent, hard-working Mexicans immigrating here, but I have an issue with an irresponsible immigration policy that doesn't acknowledge borders or make an attempt to assimilate new-comers.
