Apple keynote gaming news: Assassin's Creed 2, 21k titles photo

Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" event wrapped up this morning, and quite a bit of gaming news came out of it. No Apple tablet, though. We've broken down the gaming news for you here:

Apple is pushing the iPod Touch as a gaming device even harder now, putting it up against the PSP and DS. In fact, they called out the competitors, saying that they cost too much and don't support multitouch. Apple compared title availability between the three platforms:

  • DS/DSi: 3,680 titles
  • PSP: 607 titles
  • iPhone/iPod Touch: 21,178

A new 64gb iPod Touch is coming for $399, and it will support the faster OpenGL ES processing that the iPhone 3GS does for your less frame-y gaming pleasure. Also, the 8gb has been dropped to $199 for a cheap, easy entryway into iPhone gaming.

As for titles, Assassin's Creed 2 was a showcase game. It's a side-scrolling game that will launch on the same day as its console counterparts. In it, you'll be able to use your iPhone camera to put your face in the in-game wanted posters. Another big title was EA's Madden NFL 2010, which uses an on-screen analog stick to provide control just like its console counterparts. Also notable was Gameloft's first-person shooter Nova, which many of the livebloggers said looks a lot like Halo

Quick commentary: It's nice to see that Apple is stepping up their gaming game, though the PSP and DS call out was kind of weird. Quantity over quality isn't something you want to brag about, Apple.

There may be a ton of games on the iPod Touch/iPhone, but out of all of those, how many are junk compared to the junk on the DS and PSP? Every platform has crap games, but as far as this one goes, there's no way all 24,000 of those games are worth getting.

I bet they were arguing quantity over quantity because they've never been able to do that before. They always had less software then PC users, and now they finally beat out something. :P
And I'm not a mac hater, I am writing this ON one in fact (duel booting with Windows of course for Left 4 Dead, etc.).
As for the iPhone being a gaming device...I am still having problems seeing it. It's just...it's a PHONE. The games are nice, sure, but nothing past the cute things on my old flip-phone or stuff like Zuma on my Pocket PC. It's still a phone, and they are still phone games. It does seem to have a cool XBLA/PSN vibe thing, though.

"In fact, they called out the competitors, saying that they cost too much and don't support multitouch."

I kind of like NOT having to use a touch screen.

I have to agree. There may be a large number of games in the App Store, there isn't many to brag about. While the DS and PSP see their fair share of exclusives and very much note worthy games. Apple needs to take their grubby little hands and clean them off a bit before they truly reach out to all of the hardcore crowd.

of course they support multitouch, I can use multiple buttons at once!

As an Apple 3GS owner and all around Apple fanboy, I say at least 90-95% of iPhone games are ones that you DON'T want to play.

No hyperbole. And the app store games are still lacking in the rpg and action/adventure genres. Stop the FUD Apple!

I hope they develop a controller-dock type of accessory for the iPod/iPhone so I don't have to use my touch screen as a gamepad...I hate that.

Apple is actually claiming that their competitors have high prices? I want to kick Steve Jobs in the fucking balls. Apple's products have been overpriced since forever, and if it wasn't for the iPod touch/iPhone I think they might be worthless at this point.

And how many of those 20,000 games are complete garbage? I'd say about 90% of them!

FUCK YOU JOBS!!!!
God damn it I LITERALLY bought an ipod touch on Saturday.

Why is it that whenever I get a new apple thing the next one is announced the next week. I get an ipod mini, the nano is announced a week later, I get a new mac, then next OS is announced, and I get a touch on saturday and a new, more powerful one is announced.

This settles it, I'm killing myself.

I'm getting a gun and killing myself. No fucking around with pills just to find out my body is a fucking tank and can handle all the drugs I throw at it. If I don't die from one shot then I'm gonna just keep firing. Have to wait with pills. See my body gets mussel spasms that stop me from taking even the prescribed dosages after an almost successful attempt (I've had about 4) so I'm gonna get a fucking gun and blow my fucking brains out. That should be quick and even if it's drawn out at least I'm not going wait 4 months to try again.

@able_to_think: I presume you've opened it and pretty much can't get a return on it? Then hack! Hack to high heaven and never look back.

And also I share the sentiments of "how many of those apps are actually good?" I mean, let's look at DS Effects. They're a company who (in my opinion anyway) has put out a rather large catalog of sub-par or terrible games. And they even have the gall to pack all 51-53 (or however many they're up to now) in a single package. Oh, sorry, 67. Though they're offering 60 free. Now, that's a small number. It's akin to the...oh, the Imagine (subject) games on the DS put out by Ubisoft/whomever creates those things. Sure, some games even got to three stars (but I won't go into how the rating system fails here), but both compilations have a total rating of two stars now. I've played a few. And they're...oh, they're not great. Not great at all.

Do I use the iTouch for gaming? Yes and no. Yes, as in, quick bursts/easy Bejeweled-alikes or whatnot. But no, because running...let's say, Aurora Feint (Tetris Attack-alike) for 30 minutes reduces a full battery to less than half. And it's not even a terribly graphic intensive game!

I don't see the iPhone and all as a serious gaming platform. All things considered, the iPhone is still a cell phone and still has cell phone games. You know, I somewhat vaguely remember a cell phone who tried to be a big boy handheld console. Anyone remember what that was?

So are we going to see an admission from Steve Jobs that in yes in fact games are important to Apple Customers or is he too busy looking up new feline names for the next iteration OS X?

Stupid Apple.

I try to defend you when Sony calls you out, but then you pull this shit. I'll just reiterate my previous point in that the iPhone and DS/PSP are not (At least in my eyes) NOT direct competition. they serve two different purposes, with the games on the iPhone being for the more casual user and not the hardcore gamer, like the target market of the iPhone's supposed "Competition." When Apple makes a handheld just for gaming, then these guys can talk. It just doesn't make any sense to me until then.

If you want to push it as a serious handheld console, don't be a fucking IDIOT! The DS/DSi have touchscreens! Who the hell is interested in a crappy quality system that you have to pay every month to use? An iphone is what, $200? Now just add the low-balled figure of $50 a month to get the internet features, and within oh, the same day you've payed more than both the DSi and PSPgo for crappy quality. Side scroll games aren't anything special either, they are remnants of the GBA era. This is about as stupid as comparing a Wii game to a PS3 game, there's just no comparison. Wii games are fucking ugly in comparison to PS3 games.

@ able_to_think:
"God damn it I LITERALLY bought an ipod touch on Saturday."

As opposed to metaphorically?

I think the technology in the iPod touch is awesome (although I hate mine; cracked screen busted volume rocker, dysfunctional headphone jack, wireless and Bluetooth problems, hoping to get a replacement or *fingers crossed* and iPhone 3GS someday), and I've tinkered with some gems of games. The ones that look like shit, I just don't download. Games for the iPod are, in a way, just like games for "legitimate gaming platforms:" if they're dont right, they're great. If they're done wrong, they suck gaping anus. Case closed.

Now that the capacity of the iTouch has reached 60+ GBs it's certainly looking tempting. I personally don't think gaming with purely a touchscreen sounds all that fun, but I've never tried it and more competition never hurts.

The first Assassins' Creed game on the iPhone was fucking awesome. It was like $10 but it was definitely a full-fledged handheld game, and far superior to the 30 DS counterpart. It was just like... a really solid action platformer. The new iPhone's GPU is like 2.5 PS2's or something ridiculous. Bring out the games, yo. But don't be a bunch of chumps about it, like, for instance, right now.

It's a phone people. A dang good one too. It's games are getting more bigtime devs and are looking ang playing better and better. Sure a ton are junk but when you think you can have an iPod, camera, video cam, fast HTML web browser, a bunch of useful apps, and a decent gaming system with affordable ports with a nice size screen and it fits in your pocket as "ONE" device it's awesome. Now back to my $2.99 Resident Evil 4

Some games are okay with the touch screen, but for the type of games I usually play, no way would I play them on my iPhone.

#1 game played on my iPhone? Daily Crossword.

The 32GB model has the same processor/graphics as the 64GB model, fyi.

And Apple didn't say the DS or PSP cost more, Apple said the DS' and PSP's games, on average, cost more, which is simply fact.

Also, the PSP and DS (and Wii and Xbox 360 and PS3 and PCs and every other system ever capable of playing games) have their fair share of crap. There will always be more bad games than good games, more junk music than good music, more terrible movies than good movies...get my point?

Judging mediums by their worst examples is pointless.

@ matrixdude171,

Apple didn't say the DS lacks a touchscreen (lol, that would be dumb of them), they said the competition (DS and PSP) lacks multi-touch, which is correct. The DS doesn't recognize multiple seperate simultaneous inputs with your fingers. There are two types of touchscreen: capacitive (iPhone/iPod touch) and resistive (DS). ;)

Those who keep brining up the iPhone's touchscreen as a problem, I'm guessing you're not fans of the DS's touchscreen either, right? Or any touchscreen, for that matter. That's the whole point of a touchscreen—it haz no buttons.

Lastly, yes, the iPhone can place calls. So can a PSP via Skype. As can a PC. I'm pretty sure a few people still play games on these systems, though. :P
