Apple hires Xbox senior director of strategy photo

It seems that Apple is looking to up their presence in the gaming space with a new hire, pulled right from Microsoft.

Richard Teversham was Xbox Europe's senior director of business, insights, and strategy, a Microsoft employee for the last 15 years. Now he's moved to Apple's camp, and we think it's pretty safe to say that he'll be doing something game related there, though MCV says something about an "eductation-related role." Gizmodo reminds that this hire follows another high-profile gaming-related hire, that of ATi's former graphics CTO, the designer of the GameCube graphics chip.

Gizmodo seems to be pretty excited about the possibilities for gaming on the iPhone/iPod Touch. I don't know, though. How often have we heard that Apple is 'serious' about gaming? I have yet to see anything serious. Maybe that's coming up now that they have some firepower.

I find myself using this platform for gaming quite a bit because it's a device I always have on me, unlike the DS or PSP. I also enjoy playing one of the various tower defense games while listening to podcasts. It will never replace a dedicated gaming platform (for me), but I can see it being just perfect for the casual gamer. The iPhone/iPod touch could easily become the Wii of portables, if the DS doesn't already hold that title.

Apple console confirmed, huh? >P

The iPhone is still a cell phone with cell phone games, after all. I don't see it as an established threat against the DS and PSP, and anything that would be would kill the poor system's battery in nothing flat. :3

I mean, I'd play Aurora Feint and the system would get pretty hot and I'd be down a significant percentage of my battery after a while. Not cool.

Most of the games on the iPhone are crap, but if you jailbreak it can run a ton of emulators ( Pokemon on iPhone FTW ).

While I agree that it most likely will never de-throne the DS or PSP, Apple has a nice niche casual gamer market here and I imagine they will attempt to take full advantage of it. I handle cell phones for a living, and I've yet to see 1 iPhone user that doesn't have at least 1 game downloaded or another paid app of some kind. I have an iPhone myself, and while I don't really consider it a "serious" portable gaming device it does have some neat shitter games for it. I also like not having to carry another portable gaming device with me if I want to pass some time waiting around somewhere. Also there are a lot of iTouch users here too downloading apps and games as well.

Also keep in mind there are rumors of a Mac Tablet making the rounds on the internet for quite some time now. Maybe these guys will be working on that as well.

They're "serious" about expanding their market share of mobile gaming. Let's not kid ourselves about what their use of that word means.
