Apparently the 80010514 error doesn't mean anything to Sony, either photo

According to Eurogamer, Sony has denied knowing anything about the now mysterious error code that some PS3 owners have reported seeing, following the failure of their Blu-ray drives. Not to be confused with that other set of fictional unlucky numbers, this one is purported to have real life consequences.

However, if Gamerevolver is to be believed, the error and the drive failure are somehow coincidental in nature, and not related:

"Since this error occurred, we obviously contacted Sony Support. We were informed that the code is not common, and a simple reset of the system, and restoral of factory settings should do the trick. Unfortunately, after the restoral, the error still occurred. So, we dug a bit further, and this is what we found.

The error code is actually one of two things, a) a faulty sector on the internal hard drive, or b) a faulty installation of software/firmware, both iterations actually coincide with each other. If the hard drive suffers a faulty sector (a section of damaged space on the drive that data may have been written to that no longer is readable), an installation may still be processed, and even work, but the error can cause some serious side effects, such as option b. If your PS3 has installed an item incorrectly, including firmware, it is in high risk of receiving this error."

More on this, after the jump:

So the plot thickens. Now even more questions come to mind. Are we now dealing with two separate, yet minute (in terms of total failures reported) problems that we can expect to see a minority of PS3 owners to experience, or are these truly cause and effect? An even greater question has to be thrown out there: Since the failure rate of the PS3 seems to be well within reasonable standards for a piece of electronic equipment, why does it look as if Sony is being mum on the subject?

We'll be waiting to see if Sony attempts to address this accusation on their own, and hopefully, they'll be able to clear up a few things in the process. Something tells me that it's going to turn out to be a non-issue for most PS3's, but for the sake of erring on the side of caution -- we'd like to hear Sony's response. After all, many of you mentioned that you had experienced the error (or something like it) firsthand.

I'm a firm believer that the PS3 is a quality piece of hardware, that for the most part, functions as it should. However, I'd like to think that somewhere out there in Sony's vast empire, is an engineer that can shed some light on all of this, and put it to rest once and for all.

While not affected by this bizarre anomaly I second the notion of Sony resolving any issues with this.

Lots of updates could lead to something like this if they come out too fast without enough testing :(

I hope I'm not a casualty of this and actually had a legit failure of the drive :x

This is the point where they can handle this issue elegantly or fucked it up just like microsoft did.

*touch wood* I don't know anyone who's encountered this problem but I hope Sony doesn't pussyfoot around the issue and sorts it out sharpish.

At least if it is a hard drive fault you should be able to fix the problem by putting in a new hard drive if worse comes to worse right?

I'm a little confused as to how a firmware update could be botched, and function well for two weeks before becoming faulty only as applies to the BD drive.

But, yeah, I'd like to be reassured. I sat out the first year of 360 waiting for hardware problems and heard enough to sit that purchase out completely. Since Sony's first-year reliability was good, I bit. Hopefully this issue remains as infrequent as it appears to be.

Any trends as to which models had the BD failure?

From what I've seen it's been a smattering of 60 and 80 gb models; probably due to those selling the most I would think. Haven't heard of any 20/40 gbs with that problem.

Have a 60 gig since launch and she purrrs!

If the issue is under a small amount I would see no reason to post up a media blurb about it as it is within the realm of failure rate %.

When you buy a drill and the battery craps out or is faulty, you go get a new one by returning it. You will not see a huge media article warning you that less than 5% of batteries "could have" issues. Same applies with cars in the same sense of reasoning if the probmlem is huge a recall on the good is done.

80010515 can be as bad as 80010514. It's the loneliest number since the number 80010514.

Also, I have had a 60 gig since launch as well. This is the first time I have honestly heard of this error.

The only problem with mine is that it was accidentally tapped on the wall at the corner near the power sensor. While it hasn't messed up the PS3 or it's ability to function, apparently the weight of the thing was so hefty it managed to pop the corner up. To this day it still has a couple millimeters rising at that corner. I would try to push it back down, but I fear breaking the thing.

Well it makes sense more on the Software installation process. Every time we install a game or update it specifically mentions it:

"That do not touch your system when its flashing, recording to the HDD, installing, otherwise it could damage your PS3"

Doesn't say it exactly like that but thats what I understand. I know I got this feeling from homebrewing my PSP, and the PS3 is soo open to games, music, video, internet, HD, OS, F@home, there is so much shit the PS3 does that most probably one of those factors could lead to software error.

Another thing that can cause freezing of games, (like Gameboi mentioned previously) is that stupid information bar, fucks everything up, so have it off always.

In before Hells_666 tells us all how anti-Sony Destructoid is and then makes random accusations of Gameboi.

It is strange that Sony is keeping tight lipped, but they could well be trying to replicate the failure so they know what is causing it.

Yeah, ps3 problems are rare and kinda mysterious. Mine was a little glitchy at first but it has somehow grown more stable over time, even between updates. After swapping out for a larger hard drive I've had a wierd cannot find hard disk type error once but powering off fixed it.

Considering the first batches of diodes for blu ray drives had yeilds less than 20% they've done great to be as reliable as they are. When a system with unproven bleeding edge tech is more reliable than the competition you know somebody has some real problems. Long story short warranty's are your friend.

People, let’s not dignify Hells_666 with a response until the fanboy troll learns how to spell and speak properly.

As for this, I hope Sony comes out and says something other than “We don’t know about this.” They’ve been doing well so far in 2008, but they’re still not at the point where they can afford bad press like this.

Fight Club recall formula.

Take the number of products in the field, (A), and multiply it by the probable rate of failure, (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, (C). A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

As much as that movie rocked, I'm curious if there is a formula like this floating around out there.

60gb version PS3 here, as I said before aside from it freezing during initial setup and that information bar fiasco its been clear sailing so far.

@Samit: From what I've read here and there on the playstation forums they've been fixing peoples systems for free even if they're out of warranty. As long as they keep that up I'll be happy. It's bad PR for them to admit a problem if it's happening less than the standard 5% or so defect rate in consumer electronics.

@Corak The formula totally exists, but they have to factor in financial cost of PR fallout and other such difficult to define numbers. For instance, if your console started randomly killing people (even on tiny numbers), you would need to recall as the PR fallout would be large.

The earliest example was a car that featured a glovebox door that would occasionally fall open during crashes, and was sharp, so would sever peoples limbs/cut them deeply etc. The probability was small, and at that time, the PR was negligible, so they didnt recall. I can't remember the company.

Also, did you see how I only just got in before Hells_666 by 10 minutes. Too classic, you'd almost have to believe hes totally predictable.

I hope this doesn't happen to my PS3. Even though it's dusty and unused. If/when Blu-Ray becomes more dominant [which it isn't here in New Zealand] I hope to get much more use out of it. As far as games go, it's a wasted system. And it doesn't quite play all my media, but it's still a machine with potential. I just hope they sort this out soon.

Get a UPS system then all my PC's and consoles have UPS systems to prevent damage to hard disk during power failure and none of them have errors.

OR just replace the harddisk the one inside is cheep anyway and you can get bigger ones.

So a couple are dying. I don't think this is as widespread an issue as RROD, but it does seem a little strange that Sony doesn't know what it is.
