Man, I will never play APB for the simple fact that I don't play MMOs, but judging from the intro video above the game has an immensely interesting idea behind it. What if we all just started shooting at each other in a completely legal manner? I mean, that pretty much sums it up, and yet there is so much behind that.

I think if EA handles the growth and development of the game and its world right, APB could not only be a blast to play, but a really interesting look at a different outcome of legalized vigilantism and gang warfare. Then again, I could just be over thinking it and it'll just be a great way to create a gang and shoot people in other gangs. Yea, that's probably it.

New screens below as well.

I'm of the (minority) opinion that only 100 players in broken up servers doesn't constitute an MMO. It will be hard to justify $12 a month for that.

Tsk tsk.

100 people on broken up servers? Who the fuck are they kidding? For 12 bucks a month? WTF?

Doesn't MAG even allow up to 256 players on one server for free? Sure it's not persistent or huge, but still. Any game billing itself as an MMO should offer servers that can handle hundreds (if not thousands) of people all at once.

Of course, I don't really know much about MMOs so I could be totally wrong. But I'll take Magnalon's word as truth.

Also, this game looks extremely fucking generic, but then what game doesn't these days?

I personally think that too many people in one city would make it not as fun.. besides the lag, it would be like trying to battle in a major city in WoW or something. Just too many people. I may be completely wrong in this, but I think it would be better, if for no other reason to give a little breathing room.

From playing the beta so far (can't say anything content-wise about it until the NDA's lifted :( ) it's a brilliant game and I love it, it just works so well and the customisation aspect of the game is equally as brilliant as the combat part of the game, and for £7/$12 a month it's well worth the price; especially if you take into account WoW is $15/£9 per month and doesn't provide quite as much gratification as this game does.

So the short version of what I said is, don't write it off because it costs money to pay you bloody cheapskates :D

I was mildly interested in this, but the monthly fee effectively takes it off my radar. And based on some of the problems I've heard about it, this game will have a rough launch. It's great that they're so ambitious but I have a feeling this is going to tank.

when $12/mo worries you, you should probably be working instead of playing games.

Emuscles, I just don't want to pay a subscription fee for every game that thinks it's an MMO. What's next? World at War PC is 64 players. MAG is 265. if every game had a subscription fee, there's no way you could support a family and feasibly play more than a handful of subscription fees, on top of Xbox Live, and potentially PSN somewhere down the line.

Saw a lengthy presentation at PAX East, and it's true, this is not an MMO. I believe the words used were "2, 4, sometimes 6 player matchups" Looked and sounded to me like a 3rd person multiplayer game with sort of a PS Home thingie on the side. Either yer on a squad like any other cheap shooter, or yer standing around showing off yer virtual t-shirt.

I'm a beta tester in the game. The 100 player thing is fine actually, it's not bad, but you do happen to come across the same people often. Also the districts aren't very big, so...
That said, the game isn't a blast to play right now. There's a shitload of balancing to do. But it's beta, so we'll see what happens later on.

Was this going to have no subscription fees or I'm I confusing it with The Agency?

Johnny Justice: They said this game would not require a subscription fee. People seem to confuse this with them saying it would've been free. They stayed to their word - they gave you an option to buy 20 hours if you don't wanna buy the monthly sub.

As for the 100 people in one server thing. No, it isn't really big enough in my opinion. There's a back-up feature that can be pretty damn useless sometimes because no one responds to it. This can easily be solved with more players in one server. While it is fun, they need to do some serious upgrading to make everyone happy. It's a game you play in short bursts - not a hardcore game you can play for hours on end.

Should have been DLC-based, new outfits and the like to pay for the servers. I would have probably bought the game then.

I will not support pay-to-play on top of purchasing the game though. If it is a service with a membership fee, why am I buying the game at the start? Ridiculous.

Alright, if it weren't for the "I will never play APB for the simple fact that I don't play MMOs" bit, I wouldn't have bothered posting. If Razak has no frame of reference when it comes to this game's content and gameplay, I can understand such an oversight. In truth however, APB is nothing like the typical MMO fan's game.... and this is why I love it. I've been fortunate enough to be a closed beta tester (once a few thousand codes were finally available all over the internet, of course.) I wish I could describe in detail exactly WHY the gameplay is nothing like your typical MMO, but I'll respect the NDA as much as it sucks to not back my claims up. Hopefully once it is out for the public, more will be understood about why APB stands out from the "MMO" label it has been unfortunately tagged with. There is simply no better term for the mechanics RTW has pulled off. I personally find the game to be a very refreshing take-away from the MMO genre; something I have been waiting to find for a LONG time. So Razak, I do hope you will at least give this one a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

It's kinda funny people accuse you of being poor for not wanting to pay monthly for a game.

I think personally, that no matter how rich you are, paying monthly, as well as the asking retail price, for one game makes you a retard. Nothing to do with money, if you are willing to do that for one game, you are an idiot. No doubt about it.

Yeah the whole monthly subscription thing is why I never play MMOs.
Why should I have to pay for a game, and then pay close enough to the retail price every month to continue playing?

exactly...it's common sense.

if it was just a monthly fee, I might be willing to, at least for a while, with this and maybe secret world.

but I have never wanted to, for that basic reason, they ask for that subscription PLUS the same price as regular games, and if it ever went offline, it would be useless, with no single player mode whatsoever.

You think that maybe your subscription fee helps the developer upkeep their game, develop new content to keep people interested, and make a profit? Just a thought.

That may be, and Yet you still have jack shit to show for it if the servers close down, except for a disc that would only be good for a coaster. Just a thought.

EVERYONE:

You can either pay monthly for unlimited gameplay, or pay for gameplay hours. Meaning, if you have 90 hours on your account, and on the first week you play 5 and then leave it alone for a YEAR, you'll still have 85 hours left.

You can even sell your ingame designs, tunes and more and pay the subscription fee with it. You get Realtime Points for selling those, and you can convert those to hours or the monthly fee. You can read all about the pricing plan here: http://www.destructoid.com/apb-up-for-parole-gets-out-in-june-172501.phtml .

And this video has been the beta's intro for a while now. I'm surprised it was released just now. (I'm in the beta. Sorry, can't say another word since I'm bound by an NDA.)

It's a "nice" gesture, but also makes no sense to people who supported their product early on by pre-ordering. I bought it only because my friends were getting it and I haven't even activated my 50 hours. Literally, this is an unused copy. You can say "Well at least they're doing /something/". Sorry, but I got better refund options for my shower curtain I bought that I didn't like the color of after putting it up and returned it. There is no excuse really to treat your customers like this, not when you're as big of a corporation as EA. This is just a matter of: We'll only do something if the people make noise. If they don't complain, we do nothing.

My lesson from this is: next time I decide to shell out money to pre-order a game, I should think twice, because the earlier you buy it, the harder you get screwed over.

Smart of them to use this as a way to get a little bit of positive marketing spin on the fiasco though, it makes people who get the minor refund to feel as if they were actually compensated, when it's actually less than the least they should do.
