Another PSP model is in the works, but don't get your hopes up photo

According to the FCC, Sony is planning on rolling out another PlayStation Portable model. If you were hoping for a sexy new redesign on par with the shift from the original PSP to the Slim, I'm sorry to disappoint, but this isn't it.

The PSP-3001 looks no different physically from the Slim, but it's been assumed that there will be major changes made to the inner parts in an effort to lower production costs and stop piracy.

Seeing as how being able to run homebrew games and applications is one of the major draws to the PSP, it might be wise to wait and see how this new model turns out before you get overly excited.

Then again, who's to say another team won't be able to exploit the PSP-3001?

Way to stop piracy???

Looks like I won't be getting a PSP3, even though next to nothing can stop the teams working on homebrew for the PSP.

Wow Sony is getting so creative with this. I guess it's harder when other companies aren't showing off new designs. Sony has nothing to rip off.

I just bought a Slim about a month ago or so. However, unless this has a second analog (which it appears to not), a hard drive of some sort (which is sort of a minor concern anymore), or some major new features, I really don't care.

If it was just made to reduce piracy, haha, I'm happy I bought one when I did.

If you can play PSP games on it, it can be hacked. Seriously Sony. When are you going to realize that the only way to permanently stop hacking is to release an update which bricks PSPs.

..|.. you sony for trying to make me carry around your stupid little discs that you love so much... how about focusing on releasing games on memory sticks instead of stupid, useless and noisy discs...

I just LOVE using media invented in the 1960s... assholes

Nothing can stop team M33 or Dark AleX, so I am not worried.

Well I must be the only one, but I actually like having games on a UMD compared to the Nintendo DS cartridges. For one thing I hate having the cartridges be so ridiculously small, I've come close to losing a few games because of how small and easy to lose they are. Plus in order for companies to put their games on a memory stick with a storage size equivalent to the UMD it'd be a much higher production cost...and then of course there's the issue that games on a memory stick would be far easier to pirate. I honestly don't blame Sony for sticking with the UMD format.

If this is really just to stop piracy, i wish sony would stop wasting the money and effort and put it into game development...
2 reasons here - as you say, homebrew is a huge drawcard for the psp, just for emulation of older systems, let alone anything else. Second reason is, pirates ALWAYS find a way... i bet a lot of them dont do it to play pirated games, they do it for the challenge... either way, anti-piracy gets broken eventually.

Although, other rumors talk about adding an internal harddrive, which is a great idea, particularly if you can augment that with memory sticks still.

Maybe Sony should start thinking of ways to stop people from wanting homebrew instead of preventing it. They create these awesome game systems but they totally ignore their potential.

@groebo : Yes, lets make every game download content instead of on disks...>NOT. Goodbye sales to games, as Sony will control the price for all games. Goodbye second hand games. I own 112 UMD games, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. I love my PSP, I love the games created for it, and I love the game format. Making games downloadable just isn't a good idea, unless they are the cheap/short game for $5-$10...but full length games, no.
