Another promised Mother 3 translation goes MIA photo

Another promise of a Mother 3 fan translation was dunked in the toilet today, when the mysterious administrator of NotStarmen.net revealed that his/her firmly promised February 28th release would not come to pass. For those of you keeping score, this makes the third project to miss a projected release date, which you can't really hold against a group of avid Mother enthusiasts doing the bulk of the work in their free time. Still, though -- disappointment is disappointment, especially for those of us who have waited over a decade for a playable and localized sequel to EarthBound.

In the mean time, the aforementioned administrator posted some screenshots to tide us over and cryptically alludes to some mutiny amongst the ranks of the Mother3.org crew. From the latest post:

I apologize sincerely, I feel terrible about not coming clean on my promise. However, instead of just seeing this as me being a liar and a scam, I propose not only a translation soon, but also the story behind Mother3.Org and their translation, struggles, and my experience with them.

Whispers amongst those involved with the project on the Something Awful forums revealed some drama unfolding some months back, but this is the first I've heard of splinter groups forming due to said drama. Regardless of the circumstances, this makes three seperate groups (Starmen.net, Mother3.org, and NotStarmen.net) working towards a completed Mother 3 translation, none of which have really ponied up hard evidence as to their progress. I'll keep you posted as soon as new information presents itself, but in the mean time let's crap in one hand and hope in the other, et cetera.

Is there an official explanation from Nintendo why they ignore us with this RPG series for decades? We've only ever played one game from it, it is held in wide regard amongst many people as one of the better SNES games, and yet, the series is largely unplayable outside of Japan. WTF Nintendo? You give us Mario, Link, SSBM, Metroid, Friggin' Urban Champion, but no Mother. ...

Why?

Because they fucking hate us, obviously. Mother 3 is one of the best games I've ever played and I can't understand a single Goddamn word in it. But that shit don't fly in the states, apparently.

AD, you keed, yes? Mother/Earthbound 64 became Mother 3 on the GBA once the project went belly-up.

@bhive

it was a fan-made 3d representation of mother 3.

It is also the thing what brings sadness and defeat. Curse you, Nintendo. Curse you so hard.

I have been waiting (im)patiently for any new Mother/Earthbound game to hit the U.S. (be it Earthbound 64, Mother 3, etc.). Definitely one of my favorite series ever.

Weird. I wasn't even aware of this NotStarmen.net thing, and I thought I was on top of the whole Mother 3 translation scene. Shows what I know, I guess. Granted, I kind of quit following the other projects when I heard about the Starmen.net effort.

I'm most interested in the Starmen.net version, since they seemed to have the most solid team working on it. They also explicitly said that they were not going to be posting updates until they were practically finished with it, so the lack of updates from them doesn't bother me as much.

Nintendo has hinted again and again it MIGHT come to North America. I broke down and imported the GBA version. I can read a little Japanese, and there are two prefectly good translations available online in .txt format. The game is most definitely playable and enjoyable in that form.

I just wish I could play the game in English legitimately.

Omawgard. Everyone needs to play Mother 3. It's a new classic. This av? From Mother 3.

Print off a text FAQ and import a copy if you have to. That's what I did, and the translated text combined with the extremely expressive animations of the game itself honestly presented no problems.

I have 2 copies of the SNES Earthbound, I would sacrifice a small japanese boy to see this game get localized. I'm even considering learning Japanese for this, among other games!

Thanks for the reply Furniss. It looked like a cross between Windwaker and Mother, I was wondering if I had missed a game or something.

If they did a Mother game like that. I'd be there in a second.
