Another professional gaming channel set to launch ... but in the UK photo

While pro gaming is certainly huge in the likes of Asia and across Europe, it really hasn't caught on quite yet in the States. We have our own e-sports channel on DIRECTV, but who in the hell has DIRECTV? The latest professional gaming channel trying to inch its way into the mainstream is launching in Britain tomorrow. Here are the details:

XLeague.TV, the first British TV channel dedicated to competitive gaming, will be launched tomorrow, May 16, on Sky channel 291. XLeague will show both live and recorded matches with commentary and analysis, and feature league and tournament play. It will also screen gaming news, reviews and magazine shows.

Although eSports competition is traditionally PC-focused, XLeague.TV will feature prominent console titles across all multiplayer genres, including Resistance: Fall of Man, Pro Evolution Soccer and Project Gotham Racing.

What's it gonna take for pro gaming to really take off here in the U.S.? Do you even want it to?

Europe may get screwed with release dates and prices, but things like this make me jealous.

I'd rather play the games for myself rather than watch a bunch of asshats play them

We don't need a Pro gaming channel. Maybe a pro gaming show on G4 or Spike, but a channel on it's own? No.

I heard about this several weeks ago from a British magazine which is written on a scroll because we all use scrolls over here. Looks like it could be an interesting little venture, although seriously, it won't be as good as Games Master.

And I miss Cybernet, even though I was never around at 3am to watch it. :(

I dunno, going to a pro-gamer event sounds like a good time, but watching a channel dedicated to it? Has anyone here done such a thing and found it to be a good time?

Also, we live in a world where 24-hour news channels/cycles not only feel a bit superfluous, but have really damaged the quality of mainstream journalism. Is there truly a need for a 24-hour news channel dedicated to gaming?

I just noticed the irony in that statement.

MLG was on USA for a few months... but it was early in the morning, so not many people watched it. I think that they're going to air this season's events as well, but not sure...

Games World. I used to watch it at like 6 in the morning before school. The worst bit is, I actually thought the people who got thrown down the hole died.

I'm with -D- on this one, I find this kind of stuff excruciatingly dull to watch on TV. And I'm pretty sure Arena is being shown on endless loop on the 4th level of Hell. The 5th level is that fucking godawful Portal show that used to run on G4.

Yeah, it would be hard to watch others gaming when I could do it myself, but if there were some televized Dtoiders tearing it up, I'd really want to tune-in, and not on some steaming internet thing, but on actual real TV.

How many damned commas did I just use? I fail.

@ Dan Gale:

Oh there's no doubt that Cybernet was cringeworthy television, and when they had the male presenter, he was no better than the woman. However, I always had a strange sense of comfort on the rare occassions I'd be up at that time, watching it on TV. It was just a nice familiar thing to catch. It was trashy, but it was ... something.

I don't have any desire to watch...unless I was involved.
