Another new Nintendo handheld next year? Slow down! photo

Playing catch up with Nintendo is a bitch. They keep making a bunch of little game systems that roughly do the same thing, and I keep buying them.

DS -> DS Lite -> DSi -> DSi LL -> ???

There might even be something else in the works. Analyst Hiroshi Kamide from KBC Securities Japan thinks we should expect it next year. He's thinking that Nintendo's workings with Nvidia may make a 2010 launch for a new portable likely. "Next year, I still suspect there's a new handheld turning up," he told AP.

I guess if you don't count the hardware revisions, the DS is kind of long in the tooth. What's this new thing going to have? Three screens? No cartridge slots?

You left out a D- it will be the DDDS, i.e. the DoubleDownDS.

this is why I don't get a DS. Next year there will be a better one in which there might be a chance certain games wont play on the old one.

Nintendo has found the way of doing it the Apple way.

Yeah why not..... It's not like Nintendo cares about satisfying the current market, they just want the hardware sales right?

Nintendo was doing it "the Apple Way" well before Apple ever was.

This is why I no longer pretend to be surprised when they come out with a new version.

I'm fine with my DSi, don't need a DSi LL at all, so long as the "next gen" DSi plays the old DS/DSi games - which it likely will, I'm not bothered by it.

People upgrade their cell phones every other year or so, we get new computers every few years. Why is Nintendo always the bad guy for doing the same?

Oh right. This is the Internet. I keep forgetting.

Unless it has a GBA slot, count me still not interested. At this point the only thing that will make me upgrade from my chunky model is a library of fantastic games that won't play on older models or a new DS that has a GB/GBC/GBA slot.

The fact that DSiware isn't offering a portable virtual console, despite the undeniable popularity of various homebrews, is a testament to Nintendo currently having their finger far, far away from the pulse, jammed straight up their figurative collective ass.

Who wants a figurative collective chocolate covered pretzel?

I think all these DSes are more like speciallised versions rather than upgrades.Think of it as though they're trying to cover all of their bases rather than constantly upgrading. As long as they don't prove me wrong and try releasing versions that are slightly better than the old version every six months than I'm cool with it.

Why does everyone keep comparing this announcement of a new handheld to another member of the DS family? The new graphics processor suggests that this is a NEW successor to the DS, DS2, etc. IMO

@The Silent Protagonist:
Who said Nintendo was bad for doing this? Everyone loved the DS lite, people either cared about the DSi or didn't care at all, and I think everyone is excited about the new hardware, except for apparantly bobyoko, who, for some inexplicable reason, doesn't believe that it will have software.

Has anyone seen the size of the DSi XL? It's effing huge. No reason to want that fat thing unless you need that huge thing. The DSi is the go to handheld, not this tank.

100% agree.
It's more than official I'll stick with my old trustable DS-phat and wait if this upgrade is true.

Another handheld!? Goddamn, Nintendo!

Okay, I'll admit I love Nintendo's handhelds to hell and back, but even this is a bit much! If this is another DS revision, I'm going to...possibly rage and maybe complain about it to other people complaining about it on the Internet. And not buy it, obviously.

This better be something new and worth it, the DSi has been naught but a waste of money so far. I miss my DS Lite and its massive battery...

If it's a completely new handheld, I'll buy it. If it's yet another version of the DS without a GBA slot, no thanks. Cameras and bigger screens will never replace the ability to pop in FFVI or Golden Sun.

How many new DS's will I have to not buy to show Nintendo they need to step it up to a new level in order to pry my access to free games from my hands.

....... Seriously? What happened to the days of making a product and backing it for a little while rather than cannibalizing sales by making 4 versions of the same product? Even sony figured this out and mainstreamed all ps3 models.

The great part about the DS is that it IS long in the tooth. So many great games and they're only improving what they can do with it. I'm old and tired of change. I don't want a new handheld that will slowly build its library. The DS is great now! I'm old!!!!

Yes! Double-Down DS! DO IT, NINTENDO.

Or maybe it'll be the DS Micro. It'll come with a thumbtack-sized stylus.

I bet the only things on Nintendo's list for 2010 are:

-Release Mario game
-Release Zelda game
-Morph the fucking DS a bunch of times

@Bizznet: Pretty much. And I'll savor every last bit of each one of those. And pay gladly.
