Another Diablo III 'fan' argues for darker colors, gives examples

This video has moved! Try our Destructoid HD Youtube channel

You may remember last month when Diablo III developer Jay Wilson tore into submissions by “the game’s too darn colorful” crowd. Pointing out several flaws in the amateur photoshoppers’ design choices -- such as a lack of vibrancy, interest, and just being too difficult to easily make everything out -- Wilson’s outright dismissal seemed to finally close the eye-rolling matter.

It seems some people just won’t give up, though. A guy called Sozou has gone through and reedited the dungeon section in a gameplay trailer to try and show how a darker Diablo III could work. At a glance, it’s clear that he put more thought into it than the previous shoppers (a light to differentiate your character, for instance). Along with the comparison clip above, you can find the entire eleven minute long video and several stills on his Web site.

Sozou’s work certainly doesn’t look terrible, but the darker colors and added saturation still make the on-screen action harder to keep track of. Blizzard realized this during their extensive playtesting, which is why they lightened things up. The color obsessed community needs to realize that and get over it already.

You know if I'm gonna throw down money on a game, I like to see the damned graphics. What the hell is the point of a game where you can only see a two-inch square of the level illuminated?

I mean, the game's going to look darker anyway when you start crying like an emo bitch and your eyes are coated in a layer of your own tears mixed with your think black eyeliner.

...or you could just turn down the brightness on your computer. ZOMG, SCIENCE!

These people need to shut up and learn to make good games. Sorry, but I like to see what I'm doing in an action game. If Diablo was more like silent hill, and about the horror, then yeah, I would be all for the darker environments, but it's fucking Diablo. You click shit until it dies, and then you move on. If I didn't want to see anything, I would just play D&D and imagine things, which even then, it wouldn't be as dark as the video.

Its suppose to be harder to keep track of its a dark dungeon, wtf. It doesn't take brilliance to figure that out. I myself like the darker setting it gives it uniqueness where other games wouldn't be willing to go. However Blizzard is starting on a path to being known for cookie cutter. Let them have it.

Volomon: It's a top down dungeon crawler, while moderate darkness is fine, seeing yourself and your surroundings is fucking crucial.

Besides, I thought Diablo 3 started outside this time. Fucking jackasses forgot about the sun? And dungeons have a lot more color than just black.

Ask Tales. Better yet, ask Valve, that Episode 2 Antlion tunnel whatever was bright as a mofo at times.

I don't know what game fucknuts like this guy played, but I played Diablo 2 through entirely, and most of it isn't as dark as these little brats claim. Maybe they never beat Act 1. There's desert, jungle, hell itself (bright fucking magma EVERYWHERE!), and snowy mountains. I'll leave it to you to figure out what colors each of those areas were chock full of.

Besides, they're kids are ganna buy the game all the same.

I really don't understand why a little color is a bad thing. More colors are way easier on the eyes. Also, since I'm color blind greens and browns already run together, making the game even more dull and boring.

First, the hardcore MMO trolls complained about WoW being too much like the lobotomy land that was Diablo. Now, Diablo kooks complain that D3 takes a hint from the WoW concept design and doesn't look like a turd in a sea of diarrhoea with the light turned off.

This day and age, you're better off changing the company name after making a game...lest your "fans" tear you a new one.

I think what most people are gettin at is that the way they portray darkness is a navy blue...

The best part of Diablo in my opinion was the light radius, it added a sense of tension to the game where you never know whats around the corner until your character actually tuns it and it lights up, aka seeing the fleshbeast from the outer edge of the screen before you even get there vs popping out into the hall to get an axe swinging in ur face. Cant say that dosnt give peeps a jump.
I respect they're decision on the way they went, though i dont like it its they're game and all the QQ in the world isnt gonna change it, maby i'll get lucky and the whining fanboys'll put out a mod to make it look better...

Man I am sick of these fools complaining all the time. Either the game is too dark and brown or it's too colorful. Make up your minds idiots! Not to mention if you want it dark and crappy looking so you can't see what is going on, then just turn your monitor's color settings down. If you are hardcore enough to complain then you are hardcore enough to change a setting.

This guys vid is just too dark. I think it looks cool, but you can barely see anything more than 2 feet in front of you.

Id like something in between what theyve got there, and normal. I agree with his comments on reducing the blue and green saturationg (less than in his video though) and adding a bit of grainyness. Should be able to get some effects like that in the graphics options, though, so its not a big deal.

Either way, the game looks great, and plenty of fun, which is the important thing.

Let's see, there is the opinion of blizzard who have designed a number of excellent and award winning games and then there is the opinion of some people on the internet, who "most likely" have never designed a single game much less an award winning or top selling one.

Gee, which opinion might have more weight to it?

If these people are so sure that their way is the best way, then they should just shut the hell up and create their one Diablo-like game that has all of the senseless darkness that they want.

Idiots.

It's not like people haven't been bitching about game environments being based mostly on shades of brown since Quake. I can't believe there's almost as much backlash about this as there was back when Wind Waker came out of the cel shaded closet.

I do like what D3 looks like but it is absolutely true that the WoW influence on the graphics is very clear.

This "you can't see the details" stuff is a lame excuse though. Are you saying all games should be bright and colorful? Obviously it's a tradeoff even if there is a difference in that department. If you want dark seeing shit will be harder but you get the mood.

I trust blizzard to make a cool game even if the colors are not welcome-back-to-2000-16-bit-800x600-Pentium-350-style. People need to get over it.

The thing that got me is seeing the models in game it seems that Blizzard cant shake of the WOW-style modelling, either thay have the same art-director working on this game or they're inflexible in their artwork. NB: i really don't like WOW art style, its a bit too cartooney for my liking. As or colour? meh, as long as its fitting for the environment. The problem with the aboce video is that the swathe of green doesnt help anymore than darkness, you still cant make things out because EVERYHTING is green. They've just stuck a filer on it.

It is likely that we haven't even seen images of anything except for the first couple sections.

If you started everything out grey and bleak, you'd get over-saturated on desaturation. Lut Golein and the desert looked like a freaking picnic, but it made going underground a stark contrast. Contrast being the operative word, here. Mix it up so you don't get tired of the same old thing.

Put some faith in the devs. Wait until you see the whole game, first.

For the record, I also hope that they have the light radius action going on.
