You may remember last month when Diablo III developer Jay Wilson tore into submissions by “the game’s too darn colorful” crowd. Pointing out several flaws in the amateur photoshoppers’ design choices -- such as a lack of vibrancy, interest, and just being too difficult to easily make everything out -- Wilson’s outright dismissal seemed to finally close the eye-rolling matter.
It seems some people just won’t give up, though. A guy called Sozou has gone through and reedited the dungeon section in a gameplay trailer to try and show how a darker Diablo III could work. At a glance, it’s clear that he put more thought into it than the previous shoppers (a light to differentiate your character, for instance). Along with the comparison clip above, you can find the entire eleven minute long video and several stills on his Web site.
Sozou’s work certainly doesn’t look terrible, but the darker colors and added saturation still make the on-screen action harder to keep track of. Blizzard realized this during their extensive playtesting, which is why they lightened things up. The color obsessed community needs to realize that and get over it already.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I guess the trolls shouting for darker colors forgot about the brightly colored "rare" monsters, or how much Act 3 sucked when you were trying to find the damned enemies.
The art is fine, be more concerned as to whether the game is a worthy successor or not.
I mean, the game's going to look darker anyway when you start crying like an emo bitch and your eyes are coated in a layer of your own tears mixed with your think black eyeliner.
...or you could just turn down the brightness on your computer. ZOMG, SCIENCE!
Turn down the contrast and Gamma on your monitor...idoits.
People really need to shut the hell up about this.
Besides, I thought Diablo 3 started outside this time. Fucking jackasses forgot about the sun? And dungeons have a lot more color than just black.
Ask Tales. Better yet, ask Valve, that Episode 2 Antlion tunnel whatever was bright as a mofo at times.
This day and age, you're better off changing the company name after making a game...lest your "fans" tear you a new one.
you can make it however bright or dark you want!
The best part of Diablo in my opinion was the light radius, it added a sense of tension to the game where you never know whats around the corner until your character actually tuns it and it lights up, aka seeing the fleshbeast from the outer edge of the screen before you even get there vs popping out into the hall to get an axe swinging in ur face. Cant say that dosnt give peeps a jump.
I respect they're decision on the way they went, though i dont like it its they're game and all the QQ in the world isnt gonna change it, maby i'll get lucky and the whining fanboys'll put out a mod to make it look better...
Id like something in between what theyve got there, and normal. I agree with his comments on reducing the blue and green saturationg (less than in his video though) and adding a bit of grainyness. Should be able to get some effects like that in the graphics options, though, so its not a big deal.
Either way, the game looks great, and plenty of fun, which is the important thing.
Gee, which opinion might have more weight to it?
Idiots.
This "you can't see the details" stuff is a lame excuse though. Are you saying all games should be bright and colorful? Obviously it's a tradeoff even if there is a difference in that department. If you want dark seeing shit will be harder but you get the mood.
I trust blizzard to make a cool game even if the colors are not welcome-back-to-2000-16-bit-800x600-Pentium-350-style. People need to get over it.
"It is not the job of artists to give the audience what they want. If the audience knew what they needed, then they wouldn't be the audience, they would be the artists. It is the job of artist to give the audience what they need."
If you started everything out grey and bleak, you'd get over-saturated on desaturation. Lut Golein and the desert looked like a freaking picnic, but it made going underground a stark contrast. Contrast being the operative word, here. Mix it up so you don't get tired of the same old thing.
Put some faith in the devs. Wait until you see the whole game, first.
For the record, I also hope that they have the light radius action going on.
this is what TRUE daiblo 3 fans wants!
