I can legally root and jailbreak Android and Apple devices... I should have legal right to do the same to a Sony device. Sure, it will and should violate a terms of service and void a warranty, but it shouldn't lead to lawsuits. How can this generation so easily want to give up their legal rights???
So they are upset that Sony is trying to protect its product, its patents, and its ongoing services. Yes truly Sony is the evil empire what with them trying to protect their product from hackers. Those insurance companies that do everything in their power to not pay their obligated insurance payouts their fine, banks and credit card companies practicing predatory lending and trying to keep ppl in debt to make profit their fine, the telecom giants lobbying for stronger control of the internet and the ability to allow companies to pay to block or slow down access to their competitors sites from that ISP provider are fine, but Sony is leading the crusade against all that good and fair on the internet and must be destroyed.
I think corporate greed is a worthwhile cause to fight against. And I think there's an idealogical battle about intellectual property here. Some people believe that you can't own ideas and I agree with them.

Sony gave the world ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Any attacks against them will not be forgotten and will not be forgiven. Hacking consoles is terrible for everyone involved. It ruins the user experience with cheats and loses game developers money which in turn leads to fewer good games. If you want to steal a game do it on the PC and leave the consoles alone. I support whatever actions are necessary to keep my gaming experience as pleasant as possible.

not to mention all changes they did with EULA that automatically makes everyone who agrees to it forswear any rights even to your own home console(while at best you should only be banned from PSN). additionally:

sony can disable both software and hardware as they please - so not only you can be banned from PSN, your ps3 can be bricked and you can't do anything about it(which by the way is against the law).

@electrium, most warranties cover maybe ten percent of the time I own a console. I came pretty late to the ps3 party, and even my console is no longer under warranty. Loss of warranty really isn't a punishment.
I'm agreeing with Jim that this is a step down from their usual targets. I'm guessing nothing else has caught their attention recently which is part of the reason they decided to do this NOW instead of when the case was issued out to the hackers.
