... there's a strange oudorless gas coming through the vents, wait, is that, Zyclon B!?
*dies*
Hopefully they'll keep it that way.
LEAVE ME ALONE! I JUST WANT TO PLAY MY FUCKING VIDEO GAMES!
Why the bloody hell can't people just let the goddamn court cases play out? If Sony is wrong, then they'll lose, and it will be over. Anonymous's attempts at extortion aren't going to help anyone or anything.
Wait, you DO realize the hypocrisy here, right? You couldn't play over PSN for 2 days and you're pointing the "entitlement" finger? Were you staring at the wall for that time (and of course reading destructoid) ?
Here's a thought experiment: suppose Sony removed PSN through a firmware update in the name of hardware security or something ridiculous like that and Anon did their mischief to let Sony know their grievances. I don't have a doubt the same sheeple will jump in the defense of Sony as they are doing now.
Yet in reality Sony is bending the law to their will in acquiring personal information off various sites in their effort to convict a kid in a frivolous lawsuit that will do nothing to stop Homebrew on PS3 when the public has a right to be protected against being unwilling "evidence" in this case and has the right to be protected by law from corporate interest. All this when I can legally walk into an Apple store, jailbreak an iphone there, and still access the appstore; what's the difference on a PS3?
On top of that I'm in Canada, so I can torrent all the movies I want without fear of breaking the law because it's legal.
Also, I find Sofiks comments REALLY fucking insulting :(
@ SC - I completely agree with the whole fucking up a Japanese company right now, especially as they have promos running that raise money for charitys on the service now, and the downtime of PSN could well cut into that.
Thats how I see it anyways....SC?....Dude?......fuck, I think he really is dead....(pokes with stick....)
Of course, there'a absolutely no way to prove that.
just like the school bully who doesn't fight because he doesn't want to get his shoes dirty.
Legitimate PS3 users that comply with the terms of service are entitled to use the PSN, and faulting some third party douchebags performing a DDOS attack to prove they're only doing legal things (...wut?) isn't unreasonable. Describing anon as unduly entitled is dead on. What else would you call people that think they can disingenuously agree to something just because they can blow it off with "EULAs probably don't hold up in court"?
I'd suggest you actually think and come up with some examples that aren't totally asinine. No one would jump in and defend Sony for shutting down the entire online service "or something ridiculous". Look at that, you can't even come up with a realistic action for them to take! Strawman, plain and simple. It's like saying "what if Microsoft updated Windows so it could never connect to a network or the internet?". It's a worthless example because it would never happen. Then again, you've used the terms "thought experiment" and "sheeple" so there's a good chance most people will think the same about you for being so incredibly full of shit.
I mean, seriously? "Sheeple" has practically become a joke about falsely-enlightened activists with bullshit causes that think they're above everyone that disagrees with them. That word is probably the only thing dumber than Sofik's Godwin invocation.
Hi. I'm a consumer. I bought a machine that plays videogames. Oh wait! I can't play videogames on it because of internet terrorists? My specialized machine that is built for videogames? My "consumer rights" have never been violated by Sony. I bought a machine that is supposed to play video games and allow me to watch blu-ray films. Sony has really provided that for me and has done nothing to impact my ability to use my device as it is intended.
However, Anon's attacks on PSN prevent me from using my device as I want, thus violating my "consumer rights". The leaderboards being destroyed as a side effect of "homebrewing" violates my ability to enjoy my machine as I want. Having the value of my trophies diminished to less than nothing because some assholes made a program that unlocks all trophies instantly. These are things that damage the integrity of a system I enjoy using.
I'm all for homebrewing and experimentation, but I'm not for hackers and piracy, which has been one of the only things I've seen rise from Geohots work. Saying Sony is a bad guy and is violating consumer rights over that, or even over the Linux thing, is petty and wrong. I don't like how Sony is going about fixing the problem, but I also don't like Geohots attitude either. If Geohot took a more understanding position, (understanding of the position of most consumers and of Sony), then I'd support him. But he acts like an entitled brat. He acts like a baseball player arguing that it's his body so he should be able to use steroids all he wants, to hell with the integrity of the game. And then you're jumping in there and arguing that the MLB is in the wrong for stepping in. That the rights of one player outweighs the rights of all the other players, and all the viewers.
Playing games is the whole point. It is the reason that 99% of people bought PS3s. Of course that is all they care about.
And quite interesting for every psychiatrist. You know what they say when you have an obession. :P
Well I've missed some of the fun already, but your comment says it all. "Whaaa I can jailbreak an iPhone why not a PS3...I live in Canada I can torrent as much as I want (not totally true by the way) whaaaa...." You just want shit, you don't want to pay for it, and you don't care who suffers for it. Plain and simple.
@Maniac
Only someone who has never worked a day in his life thinks this is just about Sony. Replace Sony with Microsoft, and the comments here would read the same for the most part. The only difference would be that Sofik would be screaming for the heads of GeoHatz, and any Anon members the courts could round up.
But hey don't worry it is just for the lulz :P
Regardless, as a consumer, I will defend my own rights by voting with my wallet, should I feel Sony are abusing me. I, and all other consumers, do not need Anonymous to protect our consumer rights. This is EXACTLY why I do not buy Activision games at day one release price. This is why I have never played Spore or Crysis.
What the Hotz case should boil down to in the courts, once the jurisdictional shit is sorted, is the fact that you absolutely can do anything you want to a system you own. Just as some of Hotz's supporters are so keen to point out. Shove mashed potato into the fan, strap wheels onto it and, yes, install custom firmware.
But you cannot devise the means to circumvent anti-piracy measures and distribute this knowledge.
If you are technologically competent enough to devise the means to modify your own PS3, and wish to do so for linux or homebrew, go for it. Its your system, do whatever the fuck you want. But if you then pirate games, or distribute the requisite knowledge for pirating games, you are in the wrong.
I get the impression that the majority of Hotz's "you should be allowed to do what you want to the system you own" supporters lack to technical ability to modify their consoles on their own, and are reliant of knowledge from inidviduals like Hotz for instruction. Those that are smart enought to modify their own consoles do not go around bragging about it, or enabling piracy by distributing the knowledge. At least, those who are not Hotz are smart enough not to do this...
I really don't care about Hotz, but I do think the whole industry needs to collapse and have something better built on the ashes.
But then, I feel that way about a number of things, probably including the United States.
I sort of view them as an immune system for the internet. They attack threats (real or imagined) relentlessly. They may not get rid of the problem, but they really do make it hard to ignore.
They may be a flawed collective sentience, but I do think that the internet is better off with them than without them.
I believe what Basstomouth was alluding to is the removal of otherOS.
Both otherOS and PSN were advertised featured used to sell PS3's. The removal of either feature is equally egregious. The only difference being your personal interpretation of the perceived value of each respective feature/function.
Surely, we're all in agreement that many people bought a PS3 solely for the otherOS functionality, much in the same way people bought PS3's for blu-ray playback and have never even played a game on it.
As far as I know Anonymous doesn't have any central structure. Its hard to collaborate and make pinpoint decisions when you have no clear leader, I'd think.
W/e. Anonymous has my entire support again. Good on them for stopping the PSN attacks.
It allows anyone willing to put in a bit of time and effort to destroy their business and upset millions of paying customers.
I'm not saying Geohot or whatever deserves to have his life ruined over this, but Geohot himself was one of the people who helped make this kind of damage a reality. I'm sure there's more groups than just Anonymous capable of such foolishness.
so now sony has lost my money. because of these pricks. how many other people were going to buy something those days psn was down and have now just kinda moved on to something else?
we gamers have short attention spans and if we dont impulse buy a game, we will prob never end up getting it down the road. especially if its a downloadable game.
thats alot of money down the tubes for sony.
you fucking digust me, you turn sides quicker than a fucking mercenary
You will rue the day they will fucking take your rights and you'll be crying to make them stop, you will rue that day.
Goddamn I hate humanity so much sometimes, christ sake man, and it's all represented by the incompetant commentators who post their views only on who and what's it's about.
Have you seen actual proof that Anonymous downed PSN? Did Sony actually said that? Have you seen this? http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20110218181557455 Have you seen the way how they treat legal issues? Have you seen what they do with your private information?
They answer to all those questions is yes, but you don't give a fuck, because you're so goddamn ignorant. You fucking feed, and feed and complain only when your services are interrupted. I won't make you see, no, you will see at the end, you will see when it is too late.
I swear to god, this community is starting to look like Bill O'Reilly, you fucking devils.
Better some action than nothing.... Keep it up Anon. Peace.
Prime fucking example, you don't see the long term consequences, and why should you bother, you're already brainwashed
Many? Lets try a handful at best and leave it at that. I think the majority buy a video game console for you know video games. Also I don't recall it being heavily advertised either, it was mentioned once or twice in the press materials and that was it.
But regardless anyone with a brain knew that realized that the moment someone turns any feature into a security risk it has to be dealt with, especially in a day and age where online gaming is so important.
I just glanced at the other os feature once and said, you know all its gonna take is one good jackass on an ego trip to get this feature removed and sure enough.
You know what it does suck that one idiot ruined it for everyone else but the majority takes president here, if I'm at a head of the company and 95% of my customers want safe online gaming and the other 5% want a feature that potentially endangers said gaming I feel sorry for that 5% but that feature is gone.
One thing for sure though is that if you guys wanted the other os back you sure as hell went about it the wrong way. You guys should have dine absolutely nothing and demonstrated that they were blowing it out of proportion, instead you guys have bent over backwards to prove them right every step of the way.
The only thing these actions taken recently is insure that A. Sony gonna do everything in its power to hunt these guys down and make every hackers lives miserable. And B. Ensure this this is the first and last time we will ever see the other os feature in any console, because you would have to be insane to voluntarily put up with this crap.
