The only sliver of hope is that it's an entirely different team focusing on a mere two platforms.
OTOH, Skyrim's writing and "plot" were such a joke that this all kind of seems inevitable in hindsight.
Also, monthly fee = me not interested, ever.
What's to worry about... outside of Bethesda Softworks making knee-shots critical hits if not one-hit (career)kills?
Meh.
Meh.
I see this going as well as when Bioware took KOTOR and turned it into an MMO with TOR.
If you;ll note, Bethesda Game Studio's name is not directly attached to the project, too. Zenimax wanted this, not BGS.
As for the game, I'm interested. If they do it right, it could be amazing. As a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls lore, there are SO many places that people have missed out on by only playing Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim.
For instance, unless you played TES: Arena, you've never set foot on the Summerset Isles. I'd love to explore some of the game's lands that we only *hear* about in stories in the newer games. I have faith that from a lore perspective, it will at least be interesting, and augment your enjoyment of TES series in general. As for the game, that is yet to be seen, but I'm at least giving it a chance.
It's not about weather or not this will be a good game. It might as well be a good MMO - maybe like Star Wars the old Republic - The point is just, just like with Star Wars the old Republic, this game doesn't need to exist and would be better as a single-Player or Co-Op game.
They should focus on what those game series are known for - awesome Single Player experiences.
Final Fantasy still has single player entries and spin-offs. I'm sure there will be another Warcraft game down the road. Bioware may have chosen to stick to SWTOR for their franchise, it does not mean everyone else will do the same.
Additionally, Skyrim is set in the fourth age and this MMO waaaaaay back at the start of the third age. Most of TES has been set toward the end of the Third Age during the time of Uriel Septim VII's rule, which ending in TES IV: Oblivion.
The world of Skyrim's story is vastly different even compared to that of Oblivion. Civil Wars all over Tamriel have broken out against the Aldimiri Dominion, Dark Elves and Imperials were run out of Morrowind by the Argonians, Red Mountain is gone and Cyrodil is run by the Aldimri Dominion.
Not the same time or place as this MMORPG. From Skyrim forward, TES has its own direction to go in.
I think the concern is not completely without merit. Tell me about all the great Warcraft RTS games that have come out since WoW. I don't really believe Zenimax would go that way, but there is a troubling precedent.
I don't think Warcraft is a good example because Blizzard works in waves. It took them 12 years to release a new Diablo, which is quite a lucrative franchise. When I said WoW didn't "ruin" Warcraft 1-3, I was speaking in terms of lore.
The RTS trilogy is still available to play, and they are enhanced by everything that happens in WoW -- it gives you a better perspective of the key characters that are involved in the story (Kael'thas, etc).
As Silent hinted at, this is a different age we're talking about here -- I wouldn't put it past the developers to put in a ton of easter eggs for fans that will make replaying games like Morrowind and Skyrim more enjoyable. Even if you loathe MMOs, you still might get some enjoyment out of the lore. If not, I doubt Bethesda will stop making lucrative single player action RPGs.
Pretty sure Zenimax Online Studios is handling this game. Not Bethesda. So Fallout 4 could easily still be in development.
As could the next single player TES game.
"because it rules out Bethesda working on a new Fallout."
Thank god, just hand the reigns back to Tim Cain and/or JE Sawyer and let them go nuts.
Fallout 3 was a good game but it can hardly call itself a good Fallout game.
I don't disagree that WoW provides a nice, expanded perspective. But that isn't necessarily all that much consultation if you've been waiting for a new RTS game because you love the Warcraft RTS games. And I doubt Zenimax is going to put the kaibash on single player TES, but given that, and SWTOR, there is an established past of single player games dissapearing when an MMO enters the picture.
You're missing the point. WoW didn't "ruin" Warcraft 1-3 but it certainly ruined the chance of "Warcraft 4" happening. That's what people like me don't like about this. It won't "ruin" the previous games, but if it succeeds, Skyrim will most likely be the last of its kind.
