Animal Crossing MMO: You have got to be kidding me, right? photo

I'm actually one of the few people who, despite wanting to, really didn't like Animal Crossing very much. Having played the DS version for weeks, I suddenly came to the realization that I was playing what amounted to little more than a boredom sim. Today, however, it seems that Nintendo is flooring me with the perfect rebuttal -- Animal Crossing: The MMO.

All we know so far is that Edge magazine has the news confirmed from a Japanese source and that this will affect the Wii version of the game. For a system not known for its online exploits, the merger of a beloved IP with a perfect MMO platform is something that could propel the Wii into the Internet gaming market almost instantly.

Nintendo itself won't confirm a thing, but I propose we board Tom Nook up in his shop and set fire to it until someone talks. Even if someone doesn't, the image of an anthropomorphic raccoon screaming in a boarded up shop as he burns to death is absolutely hilarious.

You may not think so, but after the first time, you'll find it bloody addictive.

Sounds good to me. The only problem with me and Animal Crossing is that I eventually saw most of the game and would take long breaks. Throw in an MMO factor, and I may be stuck to my Wii for all time.

No, no, no... it was supposed to be a Pokemon MMO Nintendo! I wanted to run my own gym!

Regardless, Nintendo's going to need a larger Money Bin when this comes out.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder how massive the multiplayer will be. You wouldn't want too many players competing for the same resources, especially if the towns are anywhere near the size they have been. Maybe it just means there will be a persistent online connection, unlike AC:WW where it must be manually activated.

This actually sounds cool to me as I did like the original Animal Crossing. Though I agree with Mxy that a Pokemon one would be a lot cooler.

And I hope friend codes don't get in the way though I have no idea how they could make a MMO with them.

i think a pokemon mmo where you were the pokemon and not the trainer would be pretty interesting. out there in the wild, you and your clan of bulbasaurs beating the shit out of the east-side squirtle squad.

I'll believe it when Nintendo confirms it.

No, scratch that, i'll absolutely crap myself when they prove to have a lick of intelligence concerning online strategy. And I will happily do so.

@VWGTI

Yes, after awhile. I wish people who kept playing Animal Crossing past the eventual revelation of "this game is a just a chores simulator" exuded some sort of visible resin all over their body. That way I could avoid becoming friends with them.

Werd to Jim - I thought Animal Crossing was a boredom sim as well. Why make this an MMO? D-Toid should do an article on games that all the elitest nerds thought were awesome but actually sorta sucked. I'd certainly put Animal Crossing in there.

Anyone want to fight? ^_^

This would be awesome. Seems like it would work best if the game was split into to main parts. In one part, you could share a town with your friends that you invite (with the ability to move your house to another town if you wished); in the other, there would be a common gathering place (”Animal City”?) for everyone to meet up to exchange items, compete, etc.

Throw in the MySims building mechanics, and I'll buy 20 of em! 1 to play, and the other 19 discs to wipe my ass with. While they're at it (that's right, I used a contraction PROPERLY), why don't they just send those two creepy "Wii want to play" freaks to my abode to anal rape me? FOR SHAME!

I find it hard to believe that Nintendo would release an online game that lets you communicate with people that aren't on your friend list.

I have a feeling that this will work one of two ways.

1.You can only actually talk to people that you've exchanged friend codes with.

2.There is no communication or interaction at all. You just see other people in your town, kind of like WW's online.

If this lead to them eventually making a Pokemon MMO, I'm all for it. A Pokemon MMO would kick the shit out of WOW.

So it's Wild World without friend codes? I'm interested in how it'll be any different than regular Animal Crossing. They should have apartments with about 1/2 NPCs and 1/2 players, and Nook would be the landlord of all of the apartment buildings.
