Angry Birds knocked off iOS perch by 14-year-old's game photo

A game called Bubble Ball was created by a 14-year-old, and it somehow managed to knock the long-running top iOS game Angry Birds from the top of the sales charts.

Robert Nay, an eighth grader living in Spanish Fork, Utah, so he's one of us. Under his company, Nay Games, he launched his game on the App Store late last month. Now it has hit about two million downloads. Damn, kid!

It's just another physics-based game, but people are digging it enough to take Angry Birds down off the top of Apple's free apps charts.

Rob's mom drew some of the art for the game, but he did all the programming himself, says Huffington Post. Kid's gonna make some money! You mad?

I love this comment on Nay's YouTube account, under a trailer for the game:

I was mad at first because this kid was going to make money, then I realized that he's going to forget about taxes. Cant wait to hear about his audit!

It's just against human nature to be happy for someone else's success. Good on him. Wish I had done something like that when I was 14.

I love how accessible game programming and development has gotten over the years. When I was his age I spent almost every waking hour out of school doing the same thing (learning programming, and making games). Thanks to the app store and other digital distribution things like it, stories like this kid to happen more often. kudos to him.

Kid's got a future. Pretty cute that his mom drew it.

I've seen so many flash games similar to this, but it's pretty cool that he and his mom made it by themselves.

Oh yeah?? Well I can stay up past midnight and buy alcohol. So there!!

Haha seriously though, that's pretty amazing! I struggle enough with just making levels in LittleBigPlanet so I'm thoroughly impressed.

I'm happy for the kid. I'm almost twice his age, and I haven't released any software that has been downloaded millions of times. I need to get crackin', apparently.

It's not the top of the sales charts; I don't think there are any sales because it's free.

I made a game when I was 14. I didn't bother learning how to simulate physics at any level so I guess I don't deserve the cash I coulda gotten.

This story brought a smile to my face, I love hearing about stuff like this. The kid was passionate enough to want to make a game, his mom helped him out, and he actually completed it. Sure it looks simplistic and whatever, but the fact is he made an effort to do something like this and now it is paying off. Good for him!

Why are all the top Iphone games just rip offs of flash games I played on Kongregate months/years ago?

Right on! When I was his age I was messing around with SNES demo coding! Woo! Too bad there was no money in that...

I'm not trying to hate, but the game looks kinda ugly.
Looks like a bad flash game. But, hey, it could be a blast.

This. I'm mad but for completely different reasons; That something a 14 year old made is holding the attention of millions of people. But what do you expect when the #1 game on the App Store is Angry Birds.

Yeah, I went there. Anyone who exalts that game has a few screws loose. Physics + Touch = $, apparently. I've played better/more-fun games on the place-mats in fast food restaurants.

I guess I should have picked up that book titled "How to create iPhone apps" I have 3 solid game ideas that I've been working on for a while that I could just port/recreate on that platform, ???, profit. Though none of them are Physics-based shovel-ware, so maybe I'm doing it wrong.
