Chillingo effectively dominated 2010 with Angry Birds, and it seems that 2011 will fail to stem the tide of its ornithological fury. Sony is the latest to feel the rage, with the smash hit game coming to the PlayStation Network this week.
In case you've never played the game (what!?), Angry Birds charges you with the task of catapulting the beaked avengers into increasingly complex structures, with the aim of killing the evil pigs inside. As the game progresses, you unlock new birds with special abilities. It can be a damn tricky game, but it's a pile of fun.
There is a reason why this humble mobile game made it into several "game of the year" lists despite its humble mobile status. It's that damn good. Check it out.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Don't be rediculous. You don't have to buy the mini titles and you don't have to buy this. Angry Birds is a fun little game for passing time and if I had a PSP i would likley buy it. But alas I wont be playing it on the ps3.
What I mean is that my concern is just that games like this are selling so well that a lot if developers just have to be taking a 2nd look at the way they make games now. Why spend so much developing a title like GOW when you can spend considerably less, and make a lot more with a $1.00 throw away title like Angry Birds? I don't think development of big tities will just die, but they could take a back seat.
Big games will always get the upper hand. They will never ever take a back seat. One, two, shit 20 little indie games does not threaten your big manly pretty games with all the KABOOMs and the PEW
PEWs and the scripts penned by the guy who stood over the shoulder of the guy who was reading the script by the guy who wrote that one Hollywood blockbuster in the 80s. Fret not my dears.
Now if you want a good argument, try the fact that this game is really not that fun to begin with. And it isn't. And I'm an advid lover of games like this. It's just not that fun. I don't get it.
Because the truth is development studios like making big awesome titles and jsut because upstart stuidos and teams can make smaller games that sell quite nicley for a buck doesn't mean that the industry is going to stop producing such great big titles.
Big games will always rule the industry your concern is unnescessary and I love the fact smaller teams can put out games.
Chillax whilst Sony steps thar game up!
Or was that before Sony realized they could make money off it?
Of course, that's what they did with the Move too, so I guess it makes sense.
I don't know man. It might just be too much easy money to be ignored. Like RPanda mentioned a couple comments ago this is the kind of game Sony heckled in PSP commercials, but here it is now on PSP. And everyone knows how the big publishers like to wring every last drop they can out of a cash cow. For all we know these guys could be renamed Chillingo Activision next week.
So sony heckling a type of game is meant to stop teams and individuals developing for a platform/being allow to get there game out there? Your being incredibly melodramatic. Justl ike all the "casual" gaming that has been recentalyl pushed smaller titles like indie birds are not going to kill off big AAA titles.
The very idea of only making smaller titles worth a dollar is stupid for pratty much any company. Do you really think activision would stop making its moneymaker Call of Duty for just little 1$ games, or Epic Gears of War? Media Molecule Little Big Planet? Naught Dog Uncharted? Rockstart Grand Theft Auto?
No way in hell.
Franchises as big as these will not be dissapearing anytime soon and I encourage any developer who is making smaller games to continue doing so. Because there have been some great ones.
They said that this release is 63 levels, which means it's only the first set (of 4) that you can play on your phones.
I was looking forward to an actual PSN release so I could play through again and get some trophies and whatnot, but instead it looks like we're getting a gimped mini with no incentive to buy at all.
I don't know what you think I was talking about there. I don't think Sony's heckling was ever meant to be an attempt at halting the development of games like Angry Birds. It was an attempt (piss poor one) to humoursly say that games like Angry Birds don't belong on the PSP. Handhelds like the PSP were where you go for portable versions of big name titles.
Here it is not even a year later, Marcus is dead, and Angry Birds is on the PSP. They go where the money is, and right now it's .99 50 million plus downloads like Angry Birds that are bringing it in.
Seriously though, why can't we all just have different opinions? It's totally okay. If you don't like something you don't have to bash those who do and vice-versa.
That said, wishing this game won't sell everything can be giant mega-million dollar is flat out stupid. Fun and entertaining games should sell no matter the size. Period. And of course not everyone is going to like but that's why we have this diversity. That's why if you want to play Angry Birds you have Angry Birds (now with even more platforms to play on) and if you want God of War you have God of War.
You know in kindergarten, we were totally cool when someone thought the swings were more fun than the slide. We just let that kid go on the swings.
You have an attitude of superiority. Have you noticed? Most of your comments are condescending. You talk down to most people and you generally come off as a prick.
Really? Well, I apologize. No, I haven't noticed. I definitely don't think I'm superior to anyone, but I do think silly logic requires an equally silly rebuttal. I don't know where you get superiority from.
Your wrong. big titles will not die jsut ebcause there money in smaller titles. They will simply be supplemented by them. Big titles arn;t going away man. Don't be such a cynic. That at the heart of it all is what I'm trying to say.
@Xzyliac
I've seen you post allot and have never seen anything particularly wrong about your attitude. DEG was just being a dick.
Eh, I mean maybe you're right and I just don't recognize it. I'll lay off the criticism. Can't hurt, right?
If nothing else you were nice about pointing it out. :P
if only the internet had more people like you that actually used their brains and reasoned in an argument...
