Anecdotal evidence: Wii rain checks still available, doesn't draw crowds photo

There's no question that the Wii is one of the most popular gift items this holiday season, and it's no surprise that Nintendo's supply simply can't meet the demand. (OK, maybe a little ... I still can't quite wrap my head around it.) When Nintendo partnered with GameStop to announce the Wii 'Rain Check' program (a one-day reserve program that would guarantee a console some time January), it wasn't hard to imagine the resulting lines of parents shoving one another to the ground.

But according to a few GameStop store managers we spoke with, the program wasn't quite as successful as they had anticipated. One store manager we spoke with thought he would stripped of his 18 available rain checks within minutes, but was still sitting on nine of them the following day. As a result, we were told the rain check program was extended beyond the initial December 21 "one day only" period.

While some stores were able to sell through all of their rain checks (which required a fully refundable payment of $249.99), there were many who simply couldn't, despite promotional signage and phone calls.

"People have been calling about the Wii for months," said one employee who wishes to remain anonymous, "so it's shocking we still have rain checks left. Most people said they needed the system for Christmas, and were sure they'd be able to find one elsewhere, even though it's only a few days away. Good luck with that."

Despite the lack of success some stores may have had with the rain check program, there's no doubt about it, the demand for the Wii is still there ... Santa just needs it now. For those of you who are willing to wait, check your local GameStop or EB Games and let us know if you have any success securing an empty box and a product voucher.

Does this just mean people are too stupid to realize they're not going to find one and take what they can get? I guess snotty little brat children do require instant gratification on Christmas so the parents think money is better spent on other things in that case.

Good thing I bought mine in September, before the rush.

The weird thing about this Wii shortage in Scotland anyways is for the past week and a half every major retailer has had signage out saying wiis are in stock and infact I would have bought one if was not for their dastardly bundling in of crap I don't need instead of just selling the console!

yea, it was a total bust at the gamestop I work at. It's amazing that people will pay $800 on eBay for a system now rather than wait a month and get it for $250.

You mean people don't like paying $250 for an IOU? I'm not entirely surprised. I didn't expect lines for them or anything, but I did figure they'd get rid of them all in the first day.

If I had already played through Super Mario Galaxy I'd probably sell my Wii on Ebay and re-purchase it once the demand goes down. Unfortunately I'm getting SMG for Xmas and I will then have an unhealthy need to collect 241 stars.

I called my local GStop...
They said they have 10 left.

I'm going there today to get a Rain Check for it.
( Action Bastard thinks less of me now. )

: (

I've been wanting one for awhile now. Especially after SMG & the news/HYPE about SSBB.

Rainchecks and IOUs won't cut it. The people want their Wii's now!

This makes me feel like having sex with my Wii in front of the massive lines people are waiting in. Unless there was some sort of money issue, people are idiots for just now looking for a Wii. I remember buying mine out of a spur of the moment and even though I barely play it (aside from the occasional round of Manhunt 2, SMG, or Metroid Prime 2) I'm still glad I got it before the mad rush of people waiting in lines from 5 in the morning just to get one.

They should have done this in September with a Wii guaranteed in time for Xmas.

Why should it matter if you lay it away for full price, if they are going to buy one anyway and it's in such high demand, though?

I guess it's because it's the parents spending their money, a lot of the gamers who have really wanted a Wii probably picked theirs up by now.

Who wants a Christmas present sometime in january or february, thats just stupid. Sorry I agree with people looking elsewhere before taking a rain check. I also think people are turning to other consoles as well though.

Also Brainderailment is 100% correct, paying full price for layaway is absurd.

Here's the thing about them demanding full price:

Do you happen to know how many thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of deposit money GameStop is sitting on? You ask for a partial deposit (let's say $50), and you have very little commitment. I can guarantee there are still original reserve deposits for Wiis, 360s, and PS3s sitting around. You get someone to pay full price upfront, that's a very strong commitment to a purchase. There's really nothing absurd about it.

I'm pretty sure most people don't even know about the rain checks. Not only that, but the people who are looking for Wiis as Christmas gifts probably don't want to get a gift they won't have until after Christmas.

The problem is probably just that people don't realize how rare the Wii is, so they cling on to the idea that they'll be able to get one before Christmas.

Thats the beauty of living in my area of Chicago. Large population usually provides for good stock of things gaming, lots of locations and not a whole lot of people in my neighborhood are really into gaming so I never really have to reserve games or anything since they are usually always in stock.

But yeah a rain check for a Wii is a pretty silly concept. If I had a son or daughter I know id rather buy them something else and tell them that there were no Wiis available instead of handing them a raincheck and telling them "Merry Christmas! You can have fun with your gift come February"

Maybe if Gamestop wasn't such a shitty place to shop, they wouldn't have any of their raincheck allocation left.

I pre-ordered Unreal Tournament 3 (PC) from those bitches. I come to pick it up, and the clerk says that is in a box and they can't unpack it right now. She had the nerve to tell me to come back tomorrow. Seriously, they had the game but was too lazy to unpack it.

So my dumb ass actually comes back the next day to pick it up. Oh, sorry, the swag that was promised me (free unlock code and a free copy of Unreal Anthology) not included. And I never got them either.

So not only did I have to wait a day and make an extra trip, I got ripped off in the process.

FUCK GAMESTOP, and FUCK ANY COMPANY THAT DOES EXCLUSIVE DEALS WITH THEM. That means game companies that give them exclusive "Collector's Editions", and the BS like rainchecks.

Funny thing, I was just outside talking to my neighbor and she mentioned she was trying to find a Wii. Told her about the raincheck program at Gamestop, she's going out tomorrow to reserve one. I think most people trying to get one as a gift just try places like Best Buy, Target, WalMart, and so on... they probably don't bother with game shops.

i hope and pray that those who do reserve it do not wait more than 48 hours after they get their phone call

Working at such game stores, its funny when people talk back to me when I tell them we have no Wii's. Even when Game Stop can GUARANTEE them a Wii within the next month, they are smarter than that.

I tell you what though, the 'Well, I need it for CHRISTMAS' reaction in the 'I'm smarter than you' tone of voice will never get old, especially when Christmas is less than a week away and their kids have probably been asking for Wii's from Santa since July. Always makes me chuckle.

Of course it's not a big thing, the Wii is popular with kids! What parent is going to tell their kid that Santa's Elves couldn't "make" a Wii in time for Christmas, and that instead he bought a voucher guaranteeing a Wii in January? Remember, kids believe! This type of thing throws their belief in Santa into doubt, something no decent parent wants for their 7 year old. We want to keep the fantasy going as long as possible.
EternalDeathSlayer's Avatar - Comment posted on 12/22/2007 18:55

The reason parent's hate GameStop is that they figure that if Wal-Mart, Toys R Us and Best Buy, among other big box retailers, don't have one, then the gaming specialty store that only sells games should have one. Plus, most of the staff at the EB and GameStops by me are total fucking assholes.

@ Mxy: I think you're spot on. I was just in my local Game Stop Thursday before last (i.e., about 9 days ago), and they had a stack of at least 10-12 Wii's sitting on their shelves. I'm sure they're gone by now, but if your kid wants a Wii that bad, why would take a chance and wait this long to get one? And then bitch about not being able to find one?

When I was at EB yesterday another customer came asking for a Wii. They didn't have any but the employees didn't tell her about the rain check plan. I asked them about it and they said that they didn't feel like it, expecting it to lead to people incessantly calling and asking when their Wii would be in.

Got a rain check myself. Guess I'm not like most people--I'm more than willing to wait a while to get what I want. Still, with so many games coming out for the 360 I sometimes wonder if I'll have time for the Wii, too. Then I remember, "Oh, right, Nintendo only makes games at a slow trickle, so it won't be so hard to keep up," and everything is alright.

Yeah, I pretty much got it only because of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

If you want a wii come to Italy. The gamestop in my home town had around 50 stashed in the back. I couldn't find any ps3s though.

I know the idea of opening a card that says "you'll get a Wii in January" isn't very appealing, but shitty stand in presents aren't going to do much better. Then the parents are going to continue to look for them in January only to find that they are still flying off shelves and kicking themselves for not picking up a raincheck.

@casual,

You really have no one to blame but yourself if you continue to give GameStop your business after getting repeatedly screwed. Why did you go ahead and buy the game from them when they didn't give you the pre-order bonuses? You should've called their district manager the minute they told you they had it but couldn't unpack it.

There are about 15 different places you could've gone and gotten the game the day before without the hassle. When you continue to reserve and buy stuff from them, you're part of the problem.
