Android PlayStation emulator is in the works photo

Famed mobile device emulator maker ZodTTD has announced his next project: A PlayStation emulator for Android. After a 1,800+ person petition was signed to get him to port his iPhone project, he accepted He's working with the author of NESoid and GameBoid on this new project, so there's lots of talent going into this new one.

What you see above is not the final control layout, but controls can use the touchscreen, hard buttons ande ven the track ball. Fullscreen is supported, but it won't be running at a high frame rate.

As for what phone is required, you'll need Android 2.x, and they're saying that you'll need at least a Cortex A8 or Snapdragon (any EVO 4G peeps out there?) to rock this. ZodTTD says the emu is already running faster on the Nexus One that it is on the iPhone, and they're still tweaking as we speak.

There's no release date yet, but DigitalDisbeliever has some images from an early sneak peek to hold you over.

Sony really should bring out more games onto the PSN.

I usually play all my PS1 games on my PSP, so I don't think I'll be getting this, but it'll probably be really cool for other people.

I've got the htc hero and I tried using the GBA -oid emultor thing, and it really didn't tickle my fancy. The touch screen D-pad is tough to work with. Good luck playing any platformers or anything fast paced. It's tough enough to get around on a world map in an RPG too. :'(

Guess I need an android phone with physical buttons.

Fuck yeah, since I got my HTC desire I've sunk nearly 40 hours into POKEMON emerald on gameboid gba.

Also got the genesis emulator, desert/jungle strike ftw.

I'll get this as soon as possible for sure. The emulator are truly excellent on Android.

I'm with ammoelf. I've also got a Hero, and I have NESoid installed, and the onscreen d-pad and buttons suck. It's playable, but it just doesn't feel right. SNESoid though, with the SNES's 6 buttons is a joke.

The new updated .mu's from these guys have transparent, spaced out buttons on a fullscreen. It is more win than the old version shown in the image above.

This has been out for Windows Mobile forever already. It even supports Bluetooth gamepads.

...Sorry. I'm stll more of a Windows Mobile fan than Android for almost everything. There are about as many emulators for WM as ther are for an actual PC.

I have the Nexus One and have the GBC and GBA emulator on it. I constantly love it for Zelda, Pokemon, and the Final Fantasy Ports. That said I don't think this would work well just do to control issues. The only thing I can see working are JRPGs, and that's probably pushing it. Any GBA games that requires a decent amount of use with L or R button becomes a bitch to play, having 2 of each probably won't be enjoyable to play at all. These emulators work best with NES and GB/GBC, just because anything more than D-pad plus A+B is too much to deal with on such a small screen and obvious lack of buttons on Android's powerhouse phones, the Nexus One and now the EVO.

...Why does a PS1 emulator have A and B buttons?

It's kinda hard to see so many new Android phones without a keyboard... I may rarely use the keyboard on my Droid, but it does get a workout whenever I break out NESoid or GameBoid.

Interesting. Should be noted that there's already an android emulator for the iPhone.

@Neroisonfire

Why should that be noted? This is not about running an OS emu but a gaming emu on the Android system that is already on the iphone. Mentioning the android emu for the iphone means absolutely nothing.

@sexchoccy - is the performance okay then on Desire? I'm still awaiting mine :s Perhaps those with Heros are suffering from the lower processing power? Certainly emu performance is very often determined by your horsepower. I've seen someone playing SNESoid with touchscreen and they looked to be doing fine. Though is there a limit of multitouch? Will it respond to 3 buttons at once for example?

As for comparisons to PSP... fine and all that, but I will be taking my phone *everywhere*. Not so my PSP.
Also, won't PS "roms" (re: disc images) take up a LOT of space?
