And you thought the Abacus game was a waste of time photo

Continuing the trend of silly DS gimmick games, the Japanese company Success is releasing a tracing simulator. That's right, it is a 'game' about tracing. Calling itself Enpitsu de Oku no Hosomichi DS, which translates as The Narrow Way to the Deep North by Pencil, the objective, if you can even call it that, is to trace over the travel story Oku no Hosomichi, presumabely so we can learn Kanji.

In addition to all those lovely travelling tales for you to trace, you'll get to hear the voice of Japanese actor Tooru Nakamura, as well as get some pictures and background noises as if that somehow makes this a better purchase. To be honest, it's not very exciting, is it? The least they could do is jazz it up some, maybe call it Tracemaster Z and the Stunning Battle for Pencil City.

This is a Japan only title, so if you want to trace things, you'll need to get it imported post-haste. Go on, do it today and do it swiftly, my child. Or you could, y'know, just get some bloody tracing paper and a pencil for fifty cents. Perhaps I'm too cynical, though.

While I personally wouldn't buy this game, variety is always a good thing. I do think your title suggestion would help sell it to the hardcore import buyers though. Becoming a trace "master" is something everyone with a Neon Genesis Evangelion poster over their bed and a Flowmaster on their mom's Honda Civic secretly dreams of.

If this taught me Kanji, for real, I would buy it.

Learning japanese is a bitch. Anything to make it easier is welcome. But then if imported, all the menus would be in japanese so I'd be back at square one. At least I know how to introduce myself in japanese:

Watashi wa your daddy desu.

@Netik09 If your trying to say "I am your daddy" it's Boku ha anata no otousan desu..

While i was living in Japan my Japanese class which wasn't really japanese for myself but Japanese in general was pretty much watching me and the other jap's in my class learn to write correctly and in the right style. Which is the style above. I would say this is a great help if you are learning Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana because you are tracing the shape and order of the symbol, and with that you can write in a good style rather than messy sqrall.

These kanji games are really common in Japan, so I'm not surprised to see this coming out. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't several there already.

To the people who say this is a good idea to help you learn Kanji...

So is just printing some Kanji off the interweb and buying tracing paper.

@Jim - Or more importantly, the instructions on the proper order of strokes, or feedback when you screw up. Videogames are potentially one of the best learning tools available. For example, which way is probably the better way to learn: watching a DVD about arithmetic or playing a math videogame? Interactivity engages the learner, even if they're not really doing anything that they wouldn't be doing with the old pen-and-paper method. While I certainly doubt the merit of this particular piece of software for a western audience (japanese menus? But I dont. . . nevermind) it's just as applicable to the japanese learner as the three-lined writing paper we all used in first grade to perfect our english handwriting was to us.

@atheistium

"Watashi wa" is what I was taught in the Japanese classes I took in college. It's what they teach over here. Also, I think almost any Japanese chick willing to hear "watashi wa your daddy desu" isn't concerned about his grammar. They're more concerned about his ability to buy Sailor costumes, ordering beer, and pay for a love hotel for the night.

Besides, I personally never hear "boku wa" used until late in my second year of Japanese, so I hardly ever use it, personally. I could care less about how formal/informal it might be when I visit Japan and am talking to people.

Why do I not care?

Gajin Smash. Plain and simple.

This game isn't for teaching kanji, it's for people to practice their calligraphy over famous classic poems by basho, and is based on a popular book with the same idea. This game could not possibly be less suited for western audiences. Criticism is completely irrational.

On a similar note though, I'd buy the fuck out of an english tailored DS kanji teacher.
